Sometimes I do not listen to the entire song and want to skip to the next song. with the touch you have to unlock the thing every time you want to go to the next song. what a pain.

double tap your home screen (even when it is locked) ; you will see a previous and next button, click the next button you are off to the next song!.

not many folks realized this trick including me; i just learned that when my 3 year old niece playing with it (and she got the buttons working when i thought it is locked and she cannot do anything with it :) ) just a correction it was my iPhone 3G ( i believe it is same in iPod touch as well)

Wow, I was really considering getting a nano and was waiting on the refresh for the new one to become available. All I can say is I'll be looking for the older version now, hate the look of the new one.

that is the thought of the most of us here; the new iPod nano is not good at least at the current price.

it will be a hit with $79 or $99 price point not at $149/$179.

$79/$99 price point is basically iPod shuffle market area .

Thanks for the tip.! I would never have found that.

Nano

OK After looking over the new nano, I went on to the Apple site and just bought a refurbished blue 8 gig nano before they are sold out for $99. With the video and radio tuner its just what I want. I do not like the new nano at all. Its to small. Apple will probably go back to this form factor in a couple of years.

I thought the iPod Touch was the winner of this Media Event. I will have to go to an Apple Store and play with the shuffle and nano to see how I would adjust and see the differences.

Apple's Changes

Based on Apple's moves and what people want from this site alone, the shuffle and nano will be competing with each other for portable-specific needs while the iPod Touch will be media entertainment. From observations on this site, people are asking about buying the shuffle. The previous days, it was a decision between the nano, classic and iPod Touch.

I think the new nano should have been the new Shuffle, making it a 4gb model for $79.

I've got a 4th gen now and held off upgrading before. Now i'm going to have to look for a 5th gen nano now, to get video, camera and voice recording.

What an upgrade! It's just like my old iPod Shuffle. In fact, it's pretty much like my even older Creative Zen Stones, but without the option of changing folders.

Well done, Apple! So when is Blu Ray coming to the Mac again?

One question: where is the Contacts app? I don't see it! The iPhone doesn't have one too right? Well, forgive my noobishness, but where do you see/edit contacts on an iphone?

bump, no one answered me :(, I'm really curious, please help.

I've taken a day to think about the new iPods and I've come to the same conclusion: the new nano is the worst iPod ever. Can't wait until they blend that piece of crap on "will it blend".

The worst iPod for me was the 3rd generation Shuffle. Take away the controls and put them on Apple only headphones. No wonder the 4th gen brought back the click wheel.

What they should've done with the Nano is make the touch screen about the same size as the last generation's screen or maybe a little bigger, keep the camera and give it a Home button at the bottom. That would put some meat around it rather than just being a ridiculously tiny screen. Basically, make it just like a little iPod Touch (you know, like people actually wanted?), but keep the aluminum and different colors. I bet that's what next year's rev is gonna be. This year's Nano is last year's Shuffle. Swing and a miss!

The 10.5.8 requirement for OS X on all these new devices is quite disappointing. Why are they supporting XP (released in 2001), but not OS X Tiger (Released in 2005)?

Because Most Windows users still use XP. The majority of Mac users have Leopard or Snow Leopard by now. If they didn't support XP, they'd be shunning most PC users. They're only shunning a small minority of users by not supporting Tiger. And chances are, if you are still on Tiger, you probably don't care about getting new technology anyway.
I'm not saying I agree with the decision, I'm saying why I think they did so.

The highest-capacity single-platter 1.8" hard drive is still 160GB. What did you expect Apple to do? Suddenly backtrack on their "thinner is better" mantra? SSDs and flash memory haven't down down in price enough for Apple to make an SSD classic; by the time 64GB NAND chips become economical enough for Apple to maintain their margins, we'll see the classic canned and replaced with a 128GB iPod touch.

I understand the storage limits within the market, my "wants" were more software and add-on driven.

For instance, the genius capability on the device would be nice. I hate having to plug it in every time I want to make a new playlist. A built in FM receiver would be cool to have. Those are just two little thoughts I was hoping to see come to life.

Trash

What the **** does Jobs expect those of us with more than 64 gb of music to do? iPod updates over the past few years have been trash.

I don't think it's expected that you will try to put your entire media library on your Touch. You have to pick and choose. For example, my collection of just music alone is over 2TB's. They don't make a hand-held device that can hold that!

I borrowed my daughter touch last year and did not like it one bit. I like to listen to music while laying on the couch or in bed at night. Sometimes I do not listen to the entire song and want to skip to the next song. with the touch you have to unlock the thing every time you want to go to the next song. what a pain.

Wrong, you only have to double click on the home button to bring up controls. Or, as many people have pointed out, you can use the earphone controls.

It does have Genius capability. I thought an FM receiver would be nice to have, but turns out I use it less than I do my nano's video camera. I can see why it'd be nice to have, but I thought the point of an MP3 player was so you weren't subject to what the radio wanted you to listen to.

And still, after all their efforts... I can't remember what I was going to say for the life of me.

The Classic iPod has Genius capabilities without plugging it into iTunes to create the playlists? Either you or me is mistaken. Maybe I should have reiterated that I was speaking of the Classic iPod in my last post. My mistake! :)
