i subscribe to 8-10 magazines that i strictly read on my ipad (usually). too bad i cant access them via New+ using my existing login, instead of their own apps.

Yeah, I thought I could use the news App to access my already paid for subscriptions. Oh well. Not worth $10 a month for me.

WSJ is fake news? Art grads? It's conservative leading and incredibly in depth.

I like wsj. But hearing they’re hiring more staff to pump out “sugary “ news to the news app is discouraging. Let’s hold back that boring stuff that makes wsj worth reading and give those masses what they want. But hey you can search for it.

Thing is I don’t like curation. I find a paper. I drill down it. Just make it easy. I don’t need Apple deciding what I like or should want to read.

I’m still deciding. In the end I probably don’t have time for it with reading the things I do sub for that they simply don’t have.

Apple partners with Google for Apple News adverts. They also circumvent any adblock attempts.

Isn't Google that untrustworthy company Apple says won't respect your privacy? Hmmm...

"Apple News uses on-device intelligence to recommend stories and accesses your information only with your permission, never sharing it with others. And we don’t allow advertisers and publishers to track you — so only you know what you’ve read."

That doesn't mean they don't allow ads, but the tracking part (by third parties) is what people have an issue with.

I actually like the curation because it saves time. It doesn't mean I will stop reading the other stuff I read, it just means that targeted articles will make it easier for me to find stuff worth reading from their 300 or so magazines. I will still read a few magazines cover to cover, which is allowed, so curation is only one part of the experience.

Well, I've been using the free trial for a few days now and if you are already familiar with the old Apple News, the "News+" name seems pretty accurate. Basically, you just get a little more of the same kind of thing. At first I thought the Wall Street Journal looked very good. But after reading for a few days, you realize that quite a bit of what you see are stories you've already read. Each day there are only a handful of new stories. When you first subscribe there appears to be more, until you look at the dates on the stories. The trick of tapping on the sections at the top of the page just shows you the same stories. For example, if you tap on the "Opinion" link, you will see whatever editorials they have featured for the past few days and not all the editorials in the current edition.

This is all fine, but if anyone thought this would be a cheap way to get the WSJ, they will be disappointed. And the same seems to be generally true for all the other News+ content. What you get is just a little bigger selection of stories than the free version of news. Will continue with this for the rest of the free trial, but not sure there's enough additional content to justify the $10 monthly cost.

I agree with most of your points, but this premium service isn't just about news. It is also about the magazines and they are not in the free version of the app. If you don't read magazines, then the service is probably not ideal for you. However, I read magazines and there is a lot of content there.

You're right. I'm not especially interested in those magazines. Just now had a look at TIME. I don't normally read it, so not sure whether if it is just selected stories or whole issues, but there's a lot of stuff. And you are able to access every issue from the past year in a format that looks like scans of the print edition - but with no ads. That is actually pretty cool.

Another big difference between using News+ vs a dedicated app from a newspaper is the alerts. All you can do is turn them on or off. You can't select specific publications or topics for alerts.

Well, I just cancelled my subscription. Since my main interest is news and not magazines, I just didn't find enough value to justify $10/month. I always enjoyed the old Apple News for a quick overview of the day's top stories, so I'm going back to that.

Had to do a Google search just to figure out how to cancel - tap the News+ icon, tap Folowing, scroll down to the bottom of the list and tap Manage subscription. My free trial was good until April 25 but I wanted to cancel now before I forgot. ;)
