yup all my devices have the same issue (crashing) this morning and twitter is ablaze with reports, its a new thing. THERE APPEARS to be a temporary fix. When you first open the app IMMEDIATELY click the News+ tab before the app crashes and it appears the app will then stay working until the next time it closes.

the app UI is terrible. it is SO slow. downloading a magazine for offline reading is like a 30 minute event. the value for me is tremendous, this saves me a ton of money (i subscribe to way to many magazines and they always clutter the house) and lets me experience more magazines but i can't BELIEVE HOW BAD the app is.

Wow. Have to say I’m surprised. Keeps crashing for me too. Will try this.

Edit. It worked. Thanks

I am certain Apple will get this fixed. Just opening day jitters.

Why didn't Apple just fold Texture?
And why didn't they simply port Texture subscribers over to the new app?

I mean, Texture is toast

Yeah, but Texture and Apple News are BOTH owned by Apple. Why have both services when clearly, Apple News has all the magazines Texture has and more?

Having used the Apple News app for the last year? Or however long it has been out, I’ve been enjoying it on both my Mac and my iPads/iPhones (mostly iPad).

After subscribing to Apple News+ yesterday, I had the pleasure of reading several lengthy Fortune articles. I spent a few hours yesterday reading premium content on my iPad.

I used to subscribe to 5+ magazines back in the day and read prolifically. Over the last 3-4 years I’ve let most of them lapse.

Besides reading Fortune magazine articles, I read several LA Times, WSJ, and History Magazine articles. I enjoyed the experience.

We’ll give this a month to see how it works, but so far, the first day’s impression is pretty positive.

You can't beat it for the price.

Was a TEXTURE subscriber for the past year and loved it. This is even better

I will probably subscribe over the summer. Nice to have stuff to read by the pool. I have been subscribed to Texture and now I use Scribd which is similar. However, the addition of the Wall Street Journal makes me want to at least try it for a month. I didn't see any Photography mags on the screen, so that is the main drawback for my tastes. Still worth giving it a try.

Yesterday after the launch I wasn't able to immediately figure out how to access WSJ content outside of the three or four curated articles that appeared. Someone else posted about clicking on the Wall Street Journal banner when inside one of those articles, which worked fine.

Today I don't have any WSJ curated articles in my News+ feed. With those not present, any suggestions on the best way to access?

As an aside, it seems that the WSJ really isn't fully-invested in Apple+. They (or Apple) is certainly not going out of their way to make their inclusion in the service very prominent, other than the mentions during the presentation.

Edit: Nevermind, I can get it to pull up by typing into the search field. Wish it were a bit more prominent, but will do for now I guess. Need to spend some time comparing content against my digital WSJ subscription before I decide whether to cancel that one.

My experience is the same. I like that Businessweek is available and have read quite a few articles from magazines like Bon Appetit, National Geographic, Motor Trend, and Fast Company. There are quite a few magazines I used to subscribe to, so it is nice to be able to read them again.

I'm starting to have my doubts about the WSJ though. I just compared the News+ business section with what is available on the standalone app and there are quite a few articles from today missing. Even going through the News+ search they don't show up. We'll see if things are just on a delay or if they may have decided to cut some of their content from the app after the articles yesterday highlighting they would be available but not promoted.

So far, I"m pretty disappointed with the News+ service. I have been a subscriber of Texture for 5 years and have loved it. Having access to all my favourites and all the back issues from my favourite magazines like Dwell, GQ, Esquire, Fast Company, Wired, etc.. was worth the $9.99. The app was very well organized and made it easy to download and go to your favourite magazines instantly, the Apple News+ app interface is confusing and cumbersome with no way to actually favourite a magazine and with absolutely no back-issues. It's basically Texture without all the great features Texture had in a ******** interface. Thumbs down on version 1 of Apple News+

This. My WSJ subscription costs only ~$3 less per year than the News+ subscription will cost. This is a no brainer for me. This is coming out just in time too, as my WSJ sub is due to renew in May.

Geez I pay annual for WSJ, digital only, it's been going up every year and here's my next bill:
  • Nov 17, 2019 $467.88 – Online Subscription
Getting ridiculous, I will definitely consider switching.

Agreed. I had to cancel because of the same thing a few years ago.

At the bottom of the screen are three icons, at least on my iPhone (once you open the News+ app). The middle one is for News+.

I did notice that News+ has magazines not included in Texture. (Xbox, Playstation, PC Gamer, etc).
I saw that, too. I half expect that Texture will stick around for a few more years as Apple doesn’t have to do much to maintain it. And since they own it, they get the same monthly $10 from us magazine readers that they would if we went for News+. But I don’t think they’ll update Texture with new magazines. News+ will get the updates and resources.

Eventually, they’ll probably mothball Texture...here’s hoping that by then News+ has the features we like about Texture. It would be nice to have everything in one place rather than in several apps. But News+ isn’t delivering that just yet. So, it is what it is. One thing I do appreciate about the Apple’s News app: that I can use it to get to all my subscriptions. It’s so much easier to cancel or adjust them now.

it looks like they made a deal with Future, one of the largest magazine publishers around. All of those magazines are Future pubs.

Jeez! I pay $17 a month, both digital and print delivery by 3:30AM !!!!

I had one crash shortly after updating. After that, it was fine. Spent almost an hour customizing my feed and reading articles last night on both my iPad and iPhone with no problems. In spite of all the whining here, I like it so far, and will probably continue when the free trial ends. The WSJ coverage is fine... geez, for ten bucks, what do you expect? I cancelled my WSJ subscription a year ago when the price was raised to $36. I'm happy to settle for less content and save $300/year compared to a WSJ subscription. All the other publications are a nice bonus too.

And if I decide to cancel, it's easy to do. Both the WSJ and NY Times force you to personally contact them to cancel a subscription which is a real pain.

Magazines are already barely making anything, 50 percent is a highway robbery for them.

Then they shouldn't participate. Seems like a simple business decision. WSJ has gotten nothing from me since I cancelled my subscription last year. Now at least they are getting *something*.

And, by the way, what does "50 percent" even mean? 50 percent of what?

As someone who doesn't read magazines at all, I'm disappointed by this offering. It feels like Apple got greedy with the 50/50 revenue split and thought that a bunch of magazines would make up for a poor newspaper selection.

With all the glowing talk about news and information mattering to Apple, they instead chose to do what FB, Google and others are doing: squeeze every last drop out of the fourth estate while they can.

Regardless as to whether you like the NYT or WaPo's editorial slant, their investment in their own technology and subscription offerings has paid dividends and allowed them to stand on their own.

If newspapers were smart, they would band together and develop a subscription service themselves and keep 100% of the revenues.
