Now I know why they just hired Jonny's mate Marc Newson. They have to be embarrassed at how bad this thing looks. Hopefully Marc's experience in watch design can help them produce something significantly nicer by this time next year. Think I'll give this a miss and wait to see version 2 next year.

They keep going on about all the industry experts they are hiring and then they end up with this thing?

Looks very nice… indeed. Best smart watch around.

However, there's the killer.. the battery life. Don't want a watch that lasts one day.

Every other smart watch that has one day life has been panned for this very reason.

3DTV is a dying market. Broadcasters have given up on it.

Rumors were apple was setting expectations low as they wanted three to four days battery life and are only seeing two. Funny that is four to five times more than the moto 360 gets.

Cook said on stage that the watch needs to be charged at the end of the day. He slipped that in when he first talked about the inductive charging. That clearly indicates that the watch will need to be charged on a daily basis.

He also mentioned, again quickly, that the watch REQUIRES an iPhone. The watch DOES NOT HAVE GPS, so if you want to track how far you've run then you will need to bring your iPhone with you. Cook said this, just quickly, so most people missed it. So if you want to track your jogging or marathon distance, you'll need a watch and an iPhone.

Combine the above with the $349 price tag and what seems like a pretty lukewarm reaction to the design, I smell a flop.

I don't know about a flop but if I still need my phone then it doesn't do what I had hoped it would do. Sounds like a no-buy for me and I'll just pay my mortgage.

I have to wonder what steve would say. It looks very un-apple like. Rectangular design with large rounded corners and chunky depth. It's also trying to do everything.

Lots of potential, but terrible design.

What trolls

I see accusations of trolls and trolling.

Well whoopee, If I wanted a Swatch, I'd purchase a Swatch, if I want a computer, I used to go to Apple Computer - which no longer exists.

We have waited two years for Apple to produce a headless mac, usually referred too as a Mac Mini - seems we have another 10 month wait - still, if you want a Swatch, well you can buy one from Apple - has about the real functionality of original LED watches in the 1970s, but its battery life is dire - at least a mechanical watch is self-winding.

Oh never mind, I'm trolling, but I used to appreciate Apple computers, have purchased Apple computers for more than 20 years, and now find myself less and less able to purchase Apple computers, unless it's a fashion accessory for the uber-rich and wanna-be-rich brigade.

But, what ever happened to the computers, and if they are no longer interested in desktop computers, why don't they hive the division off and continue with their fixation on iToys.

Some of us actually have a requirement for decent laptops and desktops, and whilst I appreciated the iPad, the fact remains I use my "real" computers more than toys. Still, that's life - so here's hoping that someone else comes along a with a great OS who's just interested in computers, and not fashion accessories -which is about all Apple seems interested in anymore and bugger us old timers.

How much of a geek would you have to be to wear this?

I wrote this in another post. This watch is not designed for nerds.
There are tons on square watches. Cartier Santos, namely.

What I wrote earlier on a different thread.

The Apple Watch is not geared for most nerds. People need to think out of the box and not compare it to the Android Wear and the Moto 360.
It is a fashion piece and I seriously think it succeeds.
Anyone who reads my posts knows I'm not a fan wearables; devoting my time to my Swiss watches.

Style, taste are highly subjective and personal. You are not going to please everyone but the thing that strikes me the most about the iWatch is the build quality.

Build wise, it is leagues and shoulders above all the wearables on the market.

It uses 316L steel found in Omegas, Breitlings, Panerais and high end Swiss watches.
Both the Samsung and LG uses 304. I assume the Moto360 as well.
Secondly, it has sapphire and a ceramic back. These are hallmarks of high quality materials and if you carefully look at the details, the attention is there.

The raised sapphire, the chamfering and curve on the crystal is top notch. I am very impressed with the detailing. All of this equates to premium product no matter how much you or I despise the general girly unisex design.

This is definitely a fashion watch and the $350 price point warrants it. This will be popular with the women. Square/rectangle/circle, people need to look at the Jaeger-LeCoutres and the rectangle Cartiers Santos to know this appeals to women.

Also the bracelet selection is really top notch. Just look at SS matte grain on the bracelet. That is very, very, very good.

Apple poached a bunch of luxury execs and I can see this dominating the $600-$1200 mall watches - Movado, Cartier Santos and the likes. Just look at the gold on red strap. It is impressive looking on a woman.

this is as almost as stupid as an idea when apple first presented the iPhone and put a touch screen on it instead of keys,

(hint:sarcasm) those of who were around remember the same type of unfounded
criticism of a device before any one really has had a chance to see one or use one up close.
I actually can remember the same flavor of comments back then, therefore, confirming to me this will be a revolutionary product.

Great features and UI, but it looks ugly. I couldn't wear one. Shame it didn't look like the Moto 360. Thats a fab looking watch, crippled with Android Wear. Perhaps version 2 will look a bit better?

The moto 360 sucks as a smart watch. There are thousands of regular watches that look better than the 360 for a fraction of the cost. The 360 fails as a smart watch. At half the price of the most inexpensive apple watch, the 360 is the one that is overpriced.

----------

Thats because there is no battery life:D

On the face of it, it looks amazing and it certainly does a lot, very functional and well crafted... but then you compare it to the Moto360 and it instantly looks like a childs toy.

I really want to see one in the flesh.

Lol the moto 360 has a fraction of the battery life

This wasn't a Mac event. This was an iPhone event. I bought a fantastic new MacBook Pro just last month.

What really blows me away about this watch is how many different styles/combinations there are for a V1 product. Just looking at the classic stainless steel page on Apple's website and there's 18 different combinations you can chose from. I can only imagine how many SKU's Apple's going to have to maintain with this product.

Yeah the variety offered with their first product is pretty impressive. You can get quite a few different looks given all the options. I like the look of the example edition myself.

And that's the whole point. A lot of people don't want to have to carry multiple devices around with them. Now they have to, if they want the watch.

One device? Now we need 2 of them. I think Jobs understood it better with his one device speech.

Most people don't carry a watch around. Unless it is a pocket watch.

Apple watch was always going to be a troublesome product category, considering how irrelevant watches have become over the years. A lot of people buy watches as accessories rather than any functional need. Not sure how much do people even spend within this segment. I still have $200 watch that I last bought 5 years back and haven't worn it since forever. That said, people who do buy it within this segment will probably find 349 bucks prohibitive, considering it will probably get obsolescent within a year or at best two of it coming out.

Then it remains to be seen how effective is it as a sports accessory. Is it an alternative to say Garmin Forerunner? And does it need the iphone to work with it? The answers have to be yes and no.

So if it's a decent accessory for day to day life plus for runs, bike rides, etc. then it will still have a lot of use.

lol wtf Samsung.

Don't forget that the Samsung Gear S has a curved screen (and housing).

There are several different design philosophies going on here - one being making the screen and watch as small as possible, but relying heavily on the phone most of the time.

Another being making the screen so large that you actually can use it more as a stand alone device (hence the sim card slot and GPS on the Gear S) that does not have to be in bluetooth range from the phone all the time.

Also, about the looks. That comes to personal opinion of course. There is a reason watch manufacturers have so many models. It's a wearable and everyone has unique tastes. Will apple ramp up manufacturing a dozen or two SKUs for different looks? Unlikely.

It's not that it's square, it's that it's ugly. If Apple targeted the premium Swiss watch market in designing this monstrosity, I would recommend that Apple improve its employee vision health benefits .

Yes someone actually gets it!!!!!
This is going to be a piece of jewelry, something that makes you feel good wearing it like a nice tag watch. Slowly it will become more and eventually indispensable. Just you "watch"

Apple Watch is literally the ugliest piece of "technology" (if thats what you can call that) I have ever seen. The User Interface is extremely ugly and feels completely separate from the iOS and OS X counterparts, there is no visual similarities between any thing. It feels out of place and clunky. That home screen is disgusting too... most of the concepts on YouTube were WAYYYYYYY better than this piece of garbage. And NO I am not a troll or an Android fan boy but there is no denying that Android Wear has the better interface and the Apple Watch would look better on a round display.

For myself, I love the UI. A lot more than the physical watch.

I really was hoping the apple watch would look more like this. Ugh. Guess i'll wait for 2.0.

that thing is pretty ugly too.

in the end, all of these are cheap junk watches.
I was really hoping for an exercise wristband type of a device that's a bit smarter than FitBit.

What I like about it:

-I like how it looks, I like the band choices. Not what I was expecting, but I'm not mad.
-The UI in general, seems... snappy ;)
-The messaging features (Drawing, voice, voice dictation) Not the stupid emoticons though.
-The notification feature, the tapping feel instead of an annoying vibration
-The pressure sensing screen

What I don't like about it:

-Battery life seems like it will be an issue (I was hoping for some cool sleep apps, not going to happen if I have to take it off every night)
-Lack of more health monitor integration (the rumors got me too excited about multiple sensors for many different things)
-The need to have an iPhone on me to use it. (how hard would it be for it to connect directly to wifi?, or have a data chip. I honestly don't know)
-No GPS, again I need to have my iPhone in my pocket.
