???

Ive never said that.

An unnamed source said that Ive said that.

I would imagine that it still retains much of its function even without an iPhone near it. For example, I'm sure it still tells time. I'm sure it still tells you what the weathers like even though it hasn't updated for a few hours. And, seeing as how Nike+ actually had a fob that went inside the shoe and could connect with your iPod nano at the time, I'm sure you could still use it to go running to estimate your distance run without your iPhone.

The one on the left looks nice. I don't know why Ive was saying that they've beaten the Swiss, but it easily bests the competition design-wise except for Motorola.

Also, this is disturbing:

So I need an iPhone in my pocket to use it? And it's $349 by itself? No deal. Please at least tell me that it'll still tell time without an iPhone.

And that's the whole point. A lot of people don't want to have to carry multiple devices around with them. Now they have to, if they want the watch.

One device? Now we need 2 of them. I think Jobs understood it better with his one device speech.

I found that quote quote quite ironic due to the fact that apple within a few years of that had released 3 new separate devices, a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough internet device.

So what are the benefits of a round design?

A square has more area than a circle with an equal diameter.
Watches are fashion statements. And to a lot of people, wearing a square watch is the same thing as wearing a headband or leg warmers; it's just too 1980's. My first thought was "reminds me of the calculator watch I wore in third grade."

I'll go to the Apple Store and try one on, but right now it just doesn't seem like an inspired design. I expected more from Apple. I'm pretty sure I won't be buying it till version 2 or 3 (if at all), especially not at that price.

Wtf!?!

So anything over $100 is the high-end luxury market?

You, my friend, are hilarious. Please stop talking.

There are really only two markets for watches: Cheap & Not-Cheap

You're either the kind of person OK with dropping $100+ on a watch, or you aren't (in which case: off to Target you go).

So, yeah -- this watch will be competing in the space occupied by high-end luxury watches (especially the gold models).

You really think we all should wait for 2nd gen like with all devices before this?

The problem with the Apple Watch, in comparison with the iDevices that came before it, is that the watch does pretty much everything worse than a device that most people already have. That wasn't true of the earlier Apple products.

I already have a watch that keeps good time, is stylish, and (more importantly) doesn't need to be recharged every night. Or paired up with my iPhone.

If I need directions, or where to find good Thai food, or simply want to send a text message to my besets bud - I've already got an iPhone that does the job better.

I guess the health and fitness functionality might come in handy - but we've seen a lot of this before. And I don't need to plug my FitBit in every night.

If the Apple Watch maintained ~ 70% of its functionality without having to carry an iPhone around, it might have some potential. But until they can pack LTE capability into a tiny package, without making battery life worse than it already is, its going to be a niche product. And I say that as a huge fan of most Apple products and someone who immediately understood the break thru nature of the iPod; iPhone; iPad; and AppleTV.

My god, how much money would Apple make if they released matching i-leg warmers and matching i-headbands ?!?!?

Just like...

You aren't Steve Jobs, so I would suggest you stop speaking for him.

The only amount of SKUs that was significantly added, was with the watchbands. They are nothing more than the Apple watch version of iPad covers.

Steve would not have added so many SKUs to anything. He understood what a trim and easy to understand product line up is. Apple of today are slowly losing the ability to understand this.

Too bad there's no camera for Facetime. That would've been a cool feature, especially if you have to be tethered to your phone.

There were announcements between the countless dropouts of what they call 'live stream?'.

Live streams have always been spotty, so it's not that they didn't know there was work to be done in improving that.

But as with all things 'cloud', they failed miserably. Why should I trust them with anything else cloud-related when they can't get a simple video stream right?

The streaming was very sad. The message was on the importance of the user experience. Evidently they never tested the user experience for the broadcast. What was up with the simultaneous translation into Chinese for the first third of the event? It took them that long to recognize the problem and fix it? And indeed the dropouts were very bad. A great set of product messages that were marred by a terrible delivery. The new head of marketing should be looking for a different broadcasting company.

Can't want to get an iPhone 6. Looks like the only advantage of 6+ is a larger screen for gaming and watching movies.

I have four Swiss mechanical watches, and while I appreciate the design sensibility and functionality of the Apple Watch, it won't be landing on my wrist. I think I much prefer the combination of a mechanical self-winding watch, a Fitbit Zip that last for months on a watch battery, and the new iPhone 6 I'll be ordering on Friday.

Maybe someday they'll release a more bracelet-like product I'd be willing to consider in addition to my actual watch, but this is clearly not intended for me. Oh well, guess I won't own every line of Apple product moving forward!

Edit: I should add, if I didn't already have a watch collection I'd get one of these on day 1, being the gadget geek that I am, and I suppose there's a chance I'll plunk down a few hundred bucks on one anyway, heheh...

Why?

The only reason that watches are round is that a circle is an ideal choice for displaying time in a standardized way. While the Apple watch of course displays the time, this IMHO is not the primary use case for the device. There are many other important use cases for which a square makes much more sense.

If the primary reason you want to wear something on your wrist is to see the time then I suggest buying a traditional watch...

Very simple. It looks much, much, much better.

But the point still stands, whatever the reason, Motorola wasn't able to get a circular screen in their watch.

LG got it. I think the bezel dial hides it. It's slightly smaller than the 360 but has higher resolution.

LOL, have you any idea how deep is 50m?

Watches that say 50m aren't actual usable at anywhere near that depth. Though they can withstand it while stationary, the second you move you arm the additional pressure created would cause the device to implode.

Now I know why they just hired Jonny's mate Marc Newson. They have to be embarrassed at how bad this thing looks. Hopefully Marc's experience in watch design can help them produce something significantly nicer by this time next year. Think I'll give this a miss and wait to see version 2 next year.

Really?

Whether or not you doubt he could have been involved, doesn't mean he wasn't.

If you remember, the iPad was actually the original invention that Jobs was trying to make, but because technology wasn't up to his vision, he ended up making the iPhone first instead.

I doubt Jobs was involved in this. Building a watch probably was on the board when he was alive but remember the design and UI on these things go back to the drawing board many times. So it's not possible this product was something he saw or approved.
