The phone can store music and has blue tooth, so why can't you use it to listen to music?

From my own experience, GPS tracking of mileage is not exact at all, so not sure why you'd use it. Its OK if you do so much distance that it doesn't matter, but precision is not great. I know it isn'T because there are several spots I know the exact distance they are from my house. I use runKeeper too.

I run with my iphone strapped (like holding a camera) to my hand. Biggest watch ever ;-).

----------

It plainly says it plays music independently on the web site, so playing video is a given (really crappy players with almost no storage 10 years ago played videos...). Don't know how much storage it has, but I'm guessing 4G would be an absolute minimum. It can collect data and then sync to the phone. Why would it be dumb, its still a small computer?

I'll wait to see actual specs before commenting further :)

I see what you're saying. Hmm. Do you think that all the models count towards this fashion strategy? Or only the gold versions?
Off to check the fashion blogs :) Thanks!

Looks are always polarizing. Some like it, some don't like it. But the general consensus is it is the best one on the market versus Android wear.

Angela Ahrendts is definitely doing her job. They got every creative directors from Vogue, Vogue USA, Vogue UK, Vogue France, etc.
Top rags like instyle, purple mag.

I bet Apple will give these journalists watches. Shell will negotiate one-off collabs w/ the likes of Marc Jacobs, Minka.
It is all about building a brand and desireability.

Micheal Kors brand was built in 6-7 years. With all the Fashion/Luxe heavyweights on the bench. I think it will be faster.
It only takes a few to start the trend. Gwen Stefani was at the Show today.

Last comment. Apple Watch is dominating the discussion Go to any gadget blog and the majority of views/comments are on the watch over the iPhone 6.

You people saying "Steve Jobs is turning in his grave"... do you not think Steve was fingers deep in the design of this product? Apple doesn't just work on 1 device every year. They work on products 10 - 20 years down the road and update as they see fit.

Cut the bullish*t.

ACTUALLY, Steve Jobs wasn't involved with apple watch. Reference David Muir's interview w Tim Cook today. Concept was started after his passing.:apple::p

That's my single thought on this. Although I really appreciate the heart monitor, I really wish they made it more independent of the iPhone. I mean it doesn't really make sense. Do I need a Mac because I have an iPhone? Do I need an iPad because I have a Mac? These products should be able to operate independently not dependently.

It collects data from the sensors and syncs to the phone, so it does operate independently. You can see and manipulate this data on your phone. The one thing the phone doesn't have is internet and GPS connectivity (those are major battery drainers), it only have low power Blue Tooth. It can also play music by itself and runs standalone apps (like many games) or those that can sync later.

apps

The haptic feedback element is one that will be very interesting and I suspect will magically be in other smart watches in one or two generations.

Hmm.. can only imaging all the porn apps that will come out using haptic tactic feedback on the jailbroken apple watch !:apple:

----------

And no iPhone Nano. Disgraceful.

I had a bad feeling it was going to be an iPod nano slapped on a band... wanted something slimmer, sleeker and more transparent.

----------

$150 more than I would conceivably pay for it, and it's ugly as hell.

The only saving grace is the OS is significantly more attractive than Jony Ive's god-awful stark white disgustingness on every other iOS device. iOS 9 hopefully takes design cues from the AppleWatch's OS.

iPhone 6 has me wanting an iPhone for the first time ever (I use an iPod Touch + iPad mini + RAZR2 V9x on prepaid) and I'm considering unifying all those devices into just an iPhone. I love that they took design cues from the iPod Touch 5, which is my favorite iOS device design.

AppleWatch, however... ugh. Seriously, ugh.

Many of you that are complaining will end up buying one. Look at the old messages when iPad and original iPhone came out. Keep it real. If you go back on your word, someone needs to spank you .

Agreed!

Steve would not have added so many SKUs to anything. He understood what a trim and easy to understand product line up is. Apple of today are slowly losing the ability to understand this.

I agree - I'm the biggest Apple fan, but this is where Apple could stumble - they are offering too many SKUs and it get more complicated in the consumers' eyes. Steve Jobs was all about good, better, best options.

apple watch

The one question no one at Apple has answered... can I go running with watch alone or do I need iPhone as well? They said iPhone's gps tracks your distance. They never mention the gps or barometer chip in the watch.

:apple:

iPods and Nanos came in multiple colors under Steve Jobs. Even that bubble iMac came in several colors.

upgrade cycle apple watch

Supposedly, according to WSJ and people 'familiar' with Apple's plans, there were supposed to be 10 different sensors.

We only got a few. Missing: O2 consumption, sun exposure, glucose, blood pressure, respiration, many others?

Version 2 apple watch: one of these new sensors + 0.25 mm thinner
Version 3 apple watch: 1 more sensor. + 0.25 mm thinner
etc.
etc.
etc.
wash rinse repeat.
glucose monitor (CGM) would be a game changer for version 2 ! the new hires are hard at work I'm sure on some of these

Good for you.

You can't pair it with your Samsung Galaxy Note 4, can you?

What an assumption! I'm actually upgrading from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 6.

Just because I don't love every product Apple makes doesn't mean I don't use some of them.

I am interested in this watch. I bought a regular watch for $50 because when I travel I check the time often and digging out my iPhone, especially when dragging my luggage isn't as convenient as just looking at my wristwatch. I rarely have a pocket to comfortably hold an iPhone so most of the time it's in a purse. Not very convenient. My big thing when considering any watch is what the band is made out of so I don't get a rash from nickel. My $50 watch ended up giving me a rash, even though I have coated the metal with nail polish. It's hard to find a non-plastic watch that doesn't at least have a metal buckle on it. Looks like almost all the materials used on this watch would work for me. I would have to check the aluminum one but I probably wouldn't get the sport version anyway. Looking forward to hearing people's experience with this and will probably get one next year because I want to have a watch anyway. Might as well be an awesome one!

P.S. It also occurred to me that getting touch alerts to direct me to someplace I'm walking is TONS better than walking and staring at my iPhone, especially in a strange city where I'm trying to not look like a target. Now I keep worrying someone is going to snatch my iPhone so I put it away, take it back out to re-orient, put it away, etc.

I wonder how far away you can be from your phone. At my work, I often go to the restroom or lunch and forget my phone at my table so my client can't contact me if they need me for something. One would think if I can connect and operate my MacPro from a city thousands of miles away, I could connect to my phone a few hundred yards away, lol.

I like the concept of the watch but the two things are making me hold off for now are:

It doesn't seem to be waterproof

It needs the damn iPhone at all times.

Until they fix these, I will wait.

I think all those are nice ideas but the bottom line is that the aesthetics don't make you **** in your pants (in a good way) the way Steve Jobs supposedly wanted his devices to.
It sort of looks like a better version of the Galaxy watches.

This is the day apple dies. You don't revolutionize a product category using the same old desing. The reason the iPhone, iPod and iMac revolutionized everything was because there was no product like them. They had a revolutionary User Interface and a revolutionary design. Apple finally blew it. 349 for a watch that needs an iPhone to fully work? I remember when Tim Cook said at the launch of the iPad mini they weren't afraid of it cannibalizing the iPad because if they didn't do it someone else would. This watch right here screams fear. Fear of being to good, fear of the watch cannibalizing the iPhone. They hyped this product so much and is nothing but an accesory. I'm sad to see the end of Apple but I guess no one can top Steve.

Wat?

Noted for future callback

The :apple:Watch interface is nice. The hardware design is pretty cool too. Let’s see what the press says after their hands on. The crown on the right of any watch is why I don’t wear them, so a deal breaker for me - surprised Apple would think of this and still do nothing about it.

You can place the crown on the left yo

$349? That's a ridiculous amount of money for a watch.
For a watch, yes, though there are watches that cost more (a LOT more).

But's its not a watch. No more than the iPhone is a "phone." It can show you the time, and the iPhone can allow you to make phone calls...but you're not paying as much as you pay for such devices for those features. And likely you're not going to use those features much at all.

A watch can't send messages to friends, can't tap you on the wrist to remind you of appointments, can't give you directions with touches, can't play music, monitor your exercise, etc. etc. etc.

That is what you're paying for. If it's not worth it to you, then it's not worth it. Likely, as with the iPhone, the price will go down with later models. But no, it's not a ridiculous amount. Not for what you're *really* getting...which is anything but a "Watch."

I'm delighted to read all that so many people here will *not* be buying the watch. I'm hoping this means that when pre-order time comes, I'll have an easier time getting myself one. :D

----------

It doesn't seem to be waterproof
It's semi-waterproof. It can withstand you washing your hands or being in the rain, but you won't be able to swim or shower with it.

Of course, I'll bet you anything you like that within a year, some company will come out with something to cover it so it will be waterproof for scuba divers and surfers and such. Just like companies came out with waterproof protection for iPhone and iPad.

As for the requirement that you have to have your phone on you at all times...you don't have your phone on you at all times? :D

I'm an apple gadget buyer. That is, I own an iPod nano 5th gen, iPod touch 5th gen, iPad 1. I replaced my iPad with a surface pro 3 and couldn't be more happy with my decision. Apple doesn't have a device of comparable functionality.

I was very interested in this watch. After seeing it I can't help but laugh at the apple apologists. I was interested in health and fitness. This thing is not even close to polar and Garmin. Polar in particular works underwater, heart rate is probably more accurate, has onboard software coaching and goals with pc workout analysis. Integrated GPS!!!

If that wasn't bad enough it is very ugly. Polar in the smartwatch realm, Seiko, omega, Sinn, stowa, all vastly superior in looks.

Back to the drawing board lol

Let's be 100% honest here for a moment shall we.

If this watch was shown off in pictures late last week, made by Samsung, Sony, LG, Motorola etc.

It would of been branded an ugly, uninspired, chunky lump of a design with no imagination, and we would of been saying, it will be blown out the water and forgotten about instantly when we see the amazing design Apple has to offer.

That's the gods honest truth and we all know it.

I have to be clear here when I say, yes Apple will have done some great functionality in the device, it will probably work well, and when paired with an iPhone probably be a great device for many.

But it's as if Apple focused almost totally on the software / integration side and how it works, and totally forgot how to make something that people would stop in their tracks, stare at, and go wow, that looks amazing.

I have to say, irrespective of my pro's and con's about Apple, they do some great classic designs, that make a statement and will stand out in years to come as almost works of design art.

This however is, for me, visually, as a piece of design/hardware the most disappointed I've been in something crafted by Apple for, well, almost year dot.

It's actually really sad now, if you look at a Google Image Search and type in iWatch, to see some of the designs people were expecting. Sure a little far fetched some of them, but they showed imagination and something you'd want to pick up and touch.

Just feel so let down :(

Don't agree with you at all. If any of the hamstrung android oems actually delivered multiple devices with a large combination of customization to give a huge number of different looks I would have been impressed.

If any of them had introduced haptic feedback on their devices and just touched the tip of the iceberg I would have been impressed.

If any of them demonstrated the ability to seamlessly integrate with the future of NFC payment systems, I would have been impressed.

If any of them promised a strong core API base made available it the best development ecosystem in the world, I would be impressed.

None of them did that though. We got a bunch of singular designs from various oems that were all seemingly rushed at entirely at the whim of Google and it's wearable os/sdks. We got a fake circle watch with one of the worst displays imaginable.

No quite a lot today to pique the interest. It is pretty clear apple has spent more time and resources developing the apple watches than all their competitors combined. Smart watches are truly a tough nut to crack but so far nobody has even shown up with any tools, instead hoping smashing the nut on their forehead enough times will break it open. Clearly apple showed up with a tool box and a long term plan and the desire to dedicate a lot of ongoing resources to this project.

It is not possible for anyone it legitimately argue that any other smart watch developer delivered as much on their first shot, nor offer a brighter future.

I get many of the things people want and that are not yet feasible in a smart watch but that is a matter of time. Holding apple accountable for all technology in existence is not a terribly fair measuring stick.

Some people stylistically want a round watch face. I get that. We are an extremely long way off from that ever being a reality. The moto 360 is an abortion of a smart watch whose display is patently absurd. In the many years it will take before you can create a practical and usable round display, people will not want them any longer.

I was a day 1 iPhone owner, one of the 100 thousand or so people who got there first. I didn't buy my first iPad until last year, and now on an air and a mini.

I currently see no reason why I need to rush out and buy an apple watch once it is launched. However the potential is there to deliver me real benefits that would make the purchase make sense. I think apple will work hard with the Apis to get third party developers on board. That and the fact that apple controls the software and hardware makes the apple watch hands down the currently presented wearables device with the brightest future. I don't believe there is currently a close second.

I have long been a naysayer about wearables needing to be a thing. However I suspect the apple watch will be capable of doing some amazing things and be a window into other amazing iOS products. I see it easily being a billion dollar product category in 2015 and growing from there. I think able has sunk an incredible amount of money and man hours into the development to date and will continue to do so.

Samsung will likely release a half dozen new smart watches before the apple watch is available for sale.

You make it sound like grabbing your iPhone, which has to be in close proximity to your iWatch *anyway* is an excruciating task. I think we need to resist hype and look at this objectively.

When you retrieve an iPhone, you much reach into your pocket and put it about what--9 inches from your face? If you were to look at directions on the tiny screen of the iWatch you'd need to raise your hand to about 4 inches from your face.

You don't have to retrieve the iWatch from a pocket but you will have to position closer to your face--I think the effort is the same. If you need to respond to a text or email you'll then need to pull out your iPhone anyway.

Voice dictate a reply or use one of the automated one touch responses

after seeing them wear it on the stream and watching the video again when it was up, it looked pretty natural, not to big and not to thick. Really people? its to thick? Did you see what it can do? Just be happy that its not the size of a half bar of soap. lol If you give them a couple years they will probably squish it down some, I'm sure of it.

----------

No need to look at anything when its "telling" you the way while your walking, or driving (if it tells you early enough).

both look like cheap $200-400 digital watches, which no self-respecting man or woman should wear on a regular basis.
i feel bad for the billionaire Apple executives who have to ditch their Pateks and Rolexes for this piece of **** a few times for photo ops.

no thanks apple and google. I will stick with my Patek and Rolexes and probably buy a new Fitbit when it comes out for working out.
So much for all the waiting.

Yeah well I think the typical Rolex is garish and monstrous and more of a penis compensation device than a watch. Signals "I am a pretty big douchbag Just look at my wrist." At least with a smart watch (any smart watch) there are potentially practical and beneficial reasons to wear one. These smart watches can tell time. A Rolex or Patek can tell time but that is literally all it can do. You can purchase a $25 watch that accurately duplicates the only function of the Rolex.

I think the percentage of men who wear watches as jewelry has dropped significantly over the past forty years. I would say most males who don't wear watches will never wear on if it just tells time. A percentage of that group, however, could be persuaded by a great deal of additional functionality to begin wearing on again.

I get it that many men wear watches as a status simple and to convey their power. I suspect that number is higher than men who just wear it to tell time.

I think apple is initially targeting the later as well as the growing non watch wearing public. So there is a market there. Is the apple phone 1.0 targeted and dbags with 25k watches they only west to show off.

Given this announcement and an expected lead time of four to give months I expect both apple and third party developers really make the devices shine.

----------

Honestly what do you expect lol it's macrumors, apple fans are members here.

Also, I cannot agree enough with you on the moto x, it's stylish and practical, and overall just a really nice watch experience. The watch isnt as customizable, so I have to give apple kudos there, but otherwise the apple watch looks like garbage.

Yes able should have pretended like their watch was round, cut off the bottom in an ugly unavoidable line and created jagged pixels around the entire border.

It is scary how many smart watch fans don't care about a display being mediocre let alone good. The 360 display is below mediocre but because the overlay is round it is mana from heaven. If samsung or apple put out the 360, they would be crushed until the end if times.

----------

I am extremely disappointed that the iWatch lacks a GPS unit. As a runner, I don't want to carry two devices with me when I run... especially not one of the new larger iPhones. I realize that serious runners make up a small segment of the market for this watch, but it is still seriously disappointing. I will not be purchasing a smart watch until it can function as a standalone device.

:(

I suspect there is a lot of stuff developers want to add to make it more capable alone. But as always there are trade offs. Perhaps a couple cycles in things may change .

----------

Was Almost sold on this until Cook announced it NEEDS an iPhone in order to work!?!

get it to work independently and get it to make and receive phone calls.

IMO- big BIG waste of $$$
Based on Apple's stock price Wall Street agrees- the watch is a Major MISS.

Apple stick always drops for announcements. Your wishes are a few years ahead of the technology

I agree - I'm the biggest Apple fan, but this is where Apple could stumble - they are offering too many SKUs and it get more complicated in the consumers' eyes. Steve Jobs was all about good, better, best options.

Well said. And I agree 100%.
