He would have when he realized it was something that was a wardrobe accessory. While everyone else came out with a single device perhaps with a band you could change out, apple went above and beyond offering a myriad of designs knowing that would be important to buyers.

I don't believe Jobs would have approved this. I think this is majorly a post Jobs initiative.

Me thinks thou doth protest too much.

People said the same of Martin Luther or Mandela. But they changed the world.

I carry around an iPad in my bag and an iPhone 1 on my belt (via a case with a clip.) If I could only have one device on me I so would. But neither can be a tablet and take calls at the same time. And I'm not wiling to move to a phablet to do both in the one device (do poorly mind you).

People have 2 options at the moment.
- The best of both worlds, ie a tablet and a phone.
- A compromise device that tries to do both but at a compromised quality.

----------

You aren't Steve Jobs, so I would suggest you stop speaking for him.

The only amount of SKUs that was significantly added, was with the watchbands. They are nothing more than the Apple watch version of iPad covers.

I am not speaking for Steve Jobs. I am just repeating what he said himself so many times, including in so many keynotes. I am saying I agree with Jobs, that's all.

----------

I found that quote quote quite ironic due to the fact that apple within a few years of that had released 3 new separate devices, a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough internet device.

Ironic I agree but Jobs still had it right.
But this does not mean all multiple use devices are great. You have to make sure you don't compromise on any features.

Seriously. You could almost buy a PS4 for what they're charging for a wristwatch. And Sony is even turning a small profit on the PS4.

Profit margin on the AppleWatch is probably outrageously high. That pricing is a joke.

Not everyone is going to buy one. Not everyone can afford one. Apple will still sell millions to tens of millions in 2015, likely creating a new billion dollar plus product category.

It doesn't matter what :apple: would have pulled out their butt today, many would complain about it here. I, for one, will welcome the smaller size watch and a nice iPhone 6+ for my purse. It seems leaps and bounds ahead of Samsung's offering and they actually made a watch sized for women too :)

It's actually funny to see this comment, because one of my thoughts after seeing the design was "That watch appears extremely feminine". I was feeling like the kid in The emperor's new clothes story and wondering how no one sees what I see. It looks like something women would love to wear "to go with their purse"

Dear Apple,

This is how you should charge the :apple: Watch 2.

WiTricity wireless charging

I want to go to sleep, and the resonant magnetic charger on my bed-side table charges the watch on my wrist while I sleep. Of course the same charger can be simultaneously charging my iPhone 7, iPad Air 2/3 and MacBook without me having to remember to plug them in.

...now get to work.

You gonna have four and five eyed babies

You make it sound like grabbing your iPhone, which has to be in close proximity to your iWatch *anyway* is an excruciating task.
Never said excruciating...I do it dozens of times a day. It is annoying. In the same way that pushing and extra button to launch an app a dozen times a day becomes annoying...or even more specifically, in the same way that NOT having to push an extra button dozens of times a day becomes refreshing. Its the type of usability that makes Apple products extraordinary.

When you retrieve an iPhone, you much reach into your pocket and put it about what--9 inches from your face? If you were to look at directions on the tiny screen of the iWatch you'd need to raise your hand to about 4 inches from your face.

Not only do I have to remove the phone, I have to put it back in my pocket once I am in the car. Most of the time, I lay it on the seat. Then I have to remember to pick it up. With the :apple:Watch, I'll just be able to get into the car. Maybe, I'll have to lift my arm to my face...maybe not.

This type of added simplicity is exactly the same as what we will get from :apple:Pay. No need to pull out a card from my wallet, no need to have to put the card back in the wallet. No chance of leaving the card on the counter.

If you need to respond to a text or email you'll then need to pull out your iPhone anyway.
Actually, I hope to be able to respond using Siri, handsfree, if I am in my car...driving...on the same road as your daughter.

If this watch, improves my workflow, it is a good investment. If it makes me have to think about my tech less during the day, it is a good investment. If it helps me manage my health in a way I am not doing right now, it is a good investment. If it brings me even a quarter of the benefits that my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro do, it is an investment worth hyping.

I think it visually looks on par with the latest offerings from the Android world - that are actually available to buy now.

I am very puzzled by the seemingly complex handling of the device though - and the addition of the selector-thingy on the side which seems largely redundant when you have a touch screen right next to it. I think its main purpose is to stand out from the crowd instead of being necessary from a usability point.

This device largely goes against everything that has been holy for Apple when it comes to the interface for iPhone and iPad. And they even talked about letting the user select between lots of different watch faces? That must be considered as pure anarchy for the typical hardcore ('Apple has already made the best selection for me') Apple enthusiast.

Apple realized early on this is not just a tech item but a wearable accessory., so being able to create a large number of cosmetic looks was always important to the project. This is something one of the oems considered

Apple Announces Apple Watch, Available in Early 2015 From $349

I don't understand your point. If the excitement over wearing one of these is all of the fun things it can do - but that to do them, you need it paired with your phone, then it's not the same as an iPod. Do you mean iPod touch? Again - iPod touch's have gps in them, no? camera and wifi for facetime, etc?

Actually no, the iPod touch does not have GPS in it. Nor do the WiFi only iPads.

I'll admit, I wasn't super excited about the Apple Watch as I watched updated presentation screen shots this morning (thx to the big live streaming fail). But tonight I rewatched the presentation on Apple TV and the Watch presentation was FAR better than I thought. I am actually excited now to go try this out in the store. I can definitely see some advantages to not having to reach into the pocket every time to check something on the phone. And I LIKE that metal mesh band or the stainless steel bands.

The one thing I'm hoping for is that while the Watch may "require" an iPhone for things like calls or messages, certain things like Health tracking and runs won't can function asynchronously so for example, if running routes can be tracked, stored, and later uploaded to the iPhone after you've returned home. It wasn't clear from the presentation whether there was GPS in the Watch or not.

What do you mean not as customizable? its more customizable that the apple watch. and comes with more watch faces right out of the gate and you can customize the watch faces too.

Moto X destroys the Apple Watch in every way possible.
Design. Material Quality. Simplistic but in interface.
better OS, Functionality and finally Google Now completely destroys it.

I mean look at this then look at apple disgrace of a watch. its night and day.

None of what you is accurate.

Spot on. No one would have believe it if the real pic had leaked. They would have said their is no way they have been beavering away for 18 months that is already so behind the curve from a design perspective.

I would ACTUALLY have preferred a nano in a swatch pop strap than this.

People are going to look fools with this thing on their wrist.

Behind what design curve lol

----------

So for the people saying it’s too thick - how thick is it? I have yet to see any measurements outside of the 38mm and 42mm height.

If you use a photo where there’s a same scale front and side shot, it looks like the thickness is about 10-11mm (not including the convex sensor pad which will won’t effect the thickness when you’re wearing it).

Now take a look at the thickness of a Tag Formula, or even a smaller (39-40mm) Rolex Daytona, they’re 12mm+.

I think in terms of a watch, it’s not particularly thick.

Yeah at least this smartwatch and others have technical reasons for thickness., the rugged, heavy, Hugh end men's watch segment make super thick watches because that is what their customers want.

Personally I prefer a thinner device when looking at watches but there is no denying the high end watch business is dominated by them

One miniaturisation too far. A white elephant. Look for them in eBay in a year. Do you want to be "That Knob With The Apple Watch Over There?"
And by 'Knob' we aren't referring to The Digital Crown here, readers.

Save yer cash folks

Lol you're embarrassing yourself just like those people who bashed the original iPod. Why do you do that? :D

At least, there is one good thing i can say about this, is the price ...

When Apple says "carrot gold." i thought expensive.

well software execution doesn't look too bad but as far as all the fashion hires go, i guess they hired only blind ones.

There seems to be two sets of expectations here. People who were hoping for or expecting something that was just like a traditional analog watch think it looks bad. Others, who didn't have that expectation seem to be happy with the design. Surely there are a few exceptions on either side.

There's a third category of people who just like to complain no matter what--their opinion is completely irrelevant.

I think the designers did well with this one. Trying to mimic traditional watches or even conventional form factors doesn't make sense here. There's a certain space age quality to the product, and rightfully so. It's not a traditional watch, it's the watch that somebody in the future would wear--assuming your vision of the future comes from 30 or 40 years ago when you were a kid. That's not a bad thing.

The design team did a really excellent job of marrying the technological vision -----and the aesthetic that goes along with that--to the fashion conscious, everybody has their own tastes reality of a wearable product.

You can't please everybody, that's a reality of all wearable products. This isn't going to appeal to someone who collects $5k+ watches or maybe even people who only like round designs. That's ok, it doesn't have to. Just because some people hate the color blue doesn't mean that clothing companies will stop making blue shirts.

This is not a one-off product for Apple, and it makes a lot of their long-term decisions make a ton of sense. Why are so many Apple stores so big? Well, it takes a lot of floor space to showcase wearable products with multiple styles. There will be more styles of the :apple:Watch, that's inevitable. There will surely be other wearable concepts in the future.

The game here is really Apple Pay. More wearables = easier access. Even if Apple only takes a fraction of the total credit card transactions made in the US, at even .25%, the revenue generated will be staggering. Every tech company has wanted to spearhead mobile payments, but Apple is the only one that has a solid enough foundation to actually do it.

I just bothered to put together a direct watch comparison in Adobe Photoshop. Braun vs. Apple Inc. watch.

Oh, what a coincidence again...

You know those watches looking nothing alike right?

----------

I don't know what to think about the iphone 6 design. Maybe it Shall grow on me first.... The gold one looks good. But since my ipad is white my phone also has to be #

The watch looks terrible compared to the competition. The new Galaxy Gear S is a Beauty, just like Moto 360 - bit Apple Watch's functionality seems amazing.

The moto 360 looks and runs like crap. Making a round face with a very awkward and very not round display was an absolutely a bad decision. Real round watches that are actually round could be had more much less. Add in the out of data hardware and it is a device only Motorola would put there name in.

I would much rather a company focus on making a high quality smartwatch instead of spending all their efforts to create inferior device and sticking a square peg in a round hole.

Once people wipe the jizz from their zipper and step back and look at the moto 360 they will see it for the piece of crap it is. The one upside is it will ultimately kill the demand for round watches.

Be 10+ years before that happens.

Samsung Galaxy Gear S. Has sim slot and GPS. Don't need to wait for 10 years unless you want an apple version.
That will never happen. They need to sell you an iPhone to work with the watch.

I put the Apple Watch in the iPad category: a nice extension of the ecosystem but not a "need to have" if you already have an iPhone... which you do need to have because the Watch is very tethered to it, not standalone. I anticipate that it will sell lots, but far fewer than one for every iPhone sold. It has lots of nice functionality, but I'm worried the user interface may prove too fussy at times -- it doesn't necessarily always seem super-intuitive like the iPhone's UI. Industrial design-wise, I find the case's rounded, flat rectangle body a bit too thick and clunky to make me lust for it. It doesn't flow with the strap. I realize there are engineering constraints, but I sure would've preferred a more fluid or curvy profile. But I'll need to see it in person to pass real judgement.

I could see them selling a cool 8-10 million in 2015 gives them revenues of ~5 billion and profits of ~1.5 billion. I suspect tryst would make them one of the most successful watch makers out there.

In 2010 Swatch was the most successful watch company with 4.97 billion in sales and 700 million in profit

Hermes Paris, which includes seiko, citizen and Casio had sales of 2.1,billion dollars with profits of 410 million dollars.

The LVMH group which owns Tag Heur, dior and other brands saw sales of 1.18 billion dollars and 89 million dollars in profit.

BVLGARIA had sales of 1.32 billion and a loss of 66.9 million.

Movadi had revenues of 378.4 and losses of 11.9 million dollars.

Seems apple is poised to be one of the biggest and most profitable watch companies in the world. If the average ticket was $450, and apple could move 10 million units, they would essentially be one of the very most successful watch makers in the world. Even at half that you are looking at 2.25 billion in revenue and close to a billion I profit., they would be a serious force in the watch business.
