Is anybody bothered that APW4 stainless steel model only gives you a 110 trade in credit or is just me?

Pretty crappy trade in. Could definitely sell it for 5+ times that especially considering it’s the practically the same watch.

It’s pretty poor apple could not put this into the series 4. There are several watch faces that would take minimal power if they are always on. I’m kind of pissed since I got a series 4 only 4 months ago thinking Apple would implement this software wise..

Ignorance of how the various technologies in an Apple Watch use energy and a lack of understanding of the limitations of hardware and software are what let you down here.

Even with a very simple watch face - static, essentially - the display in S4 would still update 60 times a second (60hz). The display in the S5, by comparison, can vary its refresh rate going as low as one update per second (1hz). You can bet that when the display enters the dimmed "always on" mode it's doing just one update per second.

You can't add that with software to hardware that isn't capable of it.

Anyone have thoughts on the $199 Series 3? Not really in the market for a higher end fitness watch and was looking at fitbits with the new versa more expensive then this and the charge less expensive - this kinda just sneaks in there then.

Apple is practically waging war on Fitbit at this point. It’s going to be more fully-featured and will likely last longer. If you use an iPhone, I can’t imagine getting a Fitbit over this.

Noticed they didn't mention the display material used for the Apple Watch Series 5 Stainless steel. Is it Glass or Sapphire Crystal? According to the advisor i spoke to it is a strengthen glass now. so i am on the fence when it comes to durability of the screen.

Seems to be ionx for GPS and GPS&Cellular in the fine print.

Maybe if you wear this watch occasionally for fitness or workout it is fine, but for everyday watch it looks pathetic. Low on testosterone or menopausal design, form does not follow function, it should be circular, aod that is old news in galaxy watches. Come on apple, Steve Jobs should haunt you.

(I am sorry for wrong choice of words in the beginning)

I totally disagree. My Apple Watch is probably my favourite Apple product ever. I love what it does and I love how it looks (I have the space black stainless-steel version, with the black link-bracelet).

Still the same as with Series 4. Ion-X for the aluminum cases, sapphire for stainless steel (source: Apple Store app).

... is it that you have low testosterone levels and need external devices to provide it for you? The Apple Watch certainly doesn't need nor provide testosterone. Similarly, watches do not experience menopause. What are you on about?

Should be circular? Since when? For decades, watches had mechanical mechanisms with rotating hands that dictated mostly circular cases. That requirement is outdated. Smart watches present information, which fits better on a rectangular screen. Round is the exact opposite of "form follows function" for a smart watch - it's being round to be familiar to those who can't cope with a rectangular watch.

If galaxy watches suit you better, no one is stopping you from buying one.

I have a series 3 Nike+ GPS + Mobile  Watch. I was so impressed with the 'always on' function that I had to pre-order the Nike series 5 this morning after watching the Keynote. I'm looking forward to having the extra 2 millimetres on the square face. Hard imagining trying to read an iMessage on a circular watch face - would I have to turn my wrist inwards, 155 degrees to read a long iMessage?

So does the galaxy watch have a similar tech in their screens? They have had an always on display for a while now with good battery life.

Don’t know if you are aware or not but Jony Ive fought for the Watch being a stand alone jewellery piece but he lost the battle. Maybe if he’d had his way it would have been what you describe wanting. Only time will tell what his new company does. That will say a lot about what he couldn’t and couldn’t do at apple.

I would love to see the Apple Watch get some sort of solar charging capability, maybe implemented in the wristband [They probably couldn't embed one in the screen..... yet].

I mean, take a look at Casio watches and Citizen Eco-Drive. I know those watches use an extremely small amount of electricity but with such an improvement in battery life by the new display in the AW5, imagine how long the AW6 could last!

If I bought one of these, the first thing I'd want to know is, can I turn off the always on screen? I'd rather have more battery life and not risk burn in at all. Hopefully there will be some reduced price Series 4s knocking around. I'll pick one up if there is.

FWIW, my 4+ year old day-one aluminum S0 has the "ion x" glass screen, and it looks pristine, despite being worn every day and having been banged into all sorts of things along the way. Their glass is pretty tough (I don't know if the SS models now have glass or sapphire).

Unfortunately that information does not seem to be easily accessible. This could either mean that Galaxy series watch displays don't support variable refresh rates or my Google-fu is not strong enough.

Based on information I was able to find (mostly on this year's Galaxy Watch), however, to get that impressive 4+ -day battery life you need to turn on power-saving features that switch the display to greyscale mode and reduce functionality. The Galaxy Watches also have notably larger batteries and smaller screens compared to the Apple Watch, which helps with battery life.

Please refer to the following for the front/back materials of the Apple Watch Series 5:

Aluminum:
Front: ION-X strengthened glass
Back: Sapphire crystal and ceramic

Stainless Steel/Titanium/Ceramic:
Front: Sapphire crystal
Back: Sapphire crystal and ceramic

Burn in? You do know it’s 2019 right?

Excellent response. I’ve always felt the same when people complained about the Apple Watch square design.

I have a series 3 LTE Al and I like it. Honestly I don't see the 4 as that much of an upgrade. Unless you feel the *slightly* bigger screen is a amazing. Shrug. The series 5, oddly, seems a more solid upgrade to me, even though most people seem to be panning it, because the internals are all upgraded.

The biggest problems with the Apple Watch are the battery life and the iPhone tether. Impossible to know now, but rumored/projected tech advancements make the series 6 very likely to improve those two issues considerably.

So if you're ok with those two current limitations, and you don't need the bigger screen or EKG, the series 3 makes a lot of sense.
