Sure, if you want 4 hour battery life. They've switched to a different kind of screen that uses less power.
It’d be a interesting experiment. I have a feeling I’d get a lot more than 4 hours. I usually end the day at 70% even with 70 second-long screen-on time when I tap the face.

It’s pretty poor apple could not put this into the series 4. There are several watch faces that would take minimal power if they are always on. I’m kind of pissed since I got a series 4 only 4 months ago thinking Apple would implement this software wise..
Sounds like the series 5 is pretty much the series 4 with the always on feature plus new materials in some models.

Do you tap the screen 50 times an hour? Even with 70 seconds per tap, you're probably only lighting it up for 10-15 minutes an hour. Yes, you might get more than 4 hours. You likely wouldn't get all day, and then everybody would complain. And Apple doesn't like features unless they think they're properly implemented (we may have different opinions on "proper" than Apple does, of course).

So just to make sure I'm not missing anything.... Series 5 is still dependent on having an iphone correct?

always on is nice, so is compass, but neither is worth upgrading for me.
I did however check the trade-in value of my S4 SBSS - $110, definitely not getting S5

Yes, the GPS version is. The cellular version doesn't require an iPhone (but there is an additional charge from you your carrier)
[doublepost=1568149943][/doublepost]Can the always on display be turned off? (I know for for movie theaters, people who may sleep with their watch on , etc)

But curious if there's an option to switch this on & off (beyond the theater mode)

I feel like they could just include this on Series 4 with a software update....

It has a new screen that can scale down to 1hz specifically to enable low energy always on display. This isn't accomplished with a software update. The Apple Watch 4's screen would be scanning continually at 60hz which would quickly drain the battery.

I really liked that compass and altimeter view on the watch face - that's pretty cool, and will give Garmin a run for their money...

But the thing I don't understand - they can have sapphire and ceramic backs on the cheaper watches... but NOT the front! That really screws over the customer.

It’s great buy. The series 3 is a pretty fast as it is

Every generation had a Retina display.

I'd never buy an apple watch with a 'composite' back. They'll scratch on normal wear badly over about a year.

Well, maybe. You still have to have an iPhone to set up the watch initially. And Messages are relayed by the phone even if it is out of range, so if there's no phone there's no Messages. Some apps also are just relaying alerts and content from the phone app too. Without an iPhone it's not a good experience.

I’m not sure if I actually want the always on display . Seriously though. I’ve started sleep tracking with my Apple Watch using the AutoSleep app (which is great). But that means I have to wear the watch all night (not a problem I just charge for an hour or so while I get ready for bed each night). But I imagine having that display on all night will kill the battery AND be annoying bc of how bright it is. Wonder if there will be a way to reset to lift to wake during certain hours.

I would guess that Theater Mode on the Series 5 would turn the screen off and make it behave just like a Series 4 in Theater Mode.

tbis watch face on my series 4 on OLED would not take much power. Upwards of 80% of the screen is off here..
... but it is still refreshed 60 times every second, whereas the screen in S5 is only refreshed once per second.

Yes, but increasingly less so. WatchOS6 will bring a dedicated AppStore directly on the watch, which is not exclusive to S5, but still helping on the way to full standaloneness.

They're calling the processor an S5 with up to 2x the performance of the S3 in the Series 3. That compares to an S4 in the Series 4 with "up to 2x the performance of the S3".

So a new name; no significant bump in performance (which is why they didn't talk about it).

The Series 5 has the same W3 wireless chip as the Series 4.

Is there really no speed bump? I would assume they could have added a more efficient chip at the least and maybe a 5-10% speed bump.

Maybe if you wear this watch occasionally for fitness or workout it is fine, but for everyday watch it looks pathetic. Low on testosterone or menopausal design, form does not follow function, it should be circular, aod that is old news in galaxy watches. Come on apple, Steve Jobs should haunt you.

(I am sorry for wrong choice of words in the beginning)
Edit:

Stay off the drugs. A circular Apple Watch would be terrible for the same reason a monitor is not circular. It’s not a timepiece, it’s a wearable computer.

It would drain incredibly fast, the Series 5 screen drops down to 1Hrz to save battery. Not sure how you use such little battery, after a 90 minute run my battery can drain by as much as 40%!

Noticed they didn't mention the display material used for the Apple Watch Series 5 Stainless steel. Is it Glass or Sapphire Crystal? According to the advisor i spoke to it is a strengthen glass now. so i am on the fence when it comes to durability of the screen.

I bet the people who complained about the Apple Watch not having an always on display are going to be here complaining about how this will affect battery life
First thing I did with my smartwatch that had aod was turn it off after seeing the effect it had on battery life.

Interesting that the leather loop and Milanese loop bands for 44mm watch dropped to $99, I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen Apple drop a price on an accessory.

Wow if that’s true my series 4 is my last Apple Watch

Just checked. Under the tech specs tab, it says front and back is sapphire crystal, like the S4. Crisis averted.

I was really hoping that the Apple Watch would be un-tethered from the iPhone. I was disappointed to not see any news about this today.

I have a comment about your posting:
It is not necessary to have an iPhone nearby to get Messages on the Apple Watch. I have left my iPhone at home for many months, and I consistently receive my Messages, no matter where I am, even when I travel without my iPhone.
Moreover, my iPhone has been broken for the last 2 months, and I still continue to receive Messages (very consistently) on my Apple Watch.

they actually did it before with the modern buckle. Used to be about $225 but now its $150 for the last year or so
