People aren't excited for this like they were for the iPhone...there isn't really anything that impressive about the iPad. I still want one though, haha.

he iPad and all that it represents is the current reminder of how completely lame they have become.

'Lame' implies a entity that is in some way hampered in making progress.

Now, there are 2 ways at looking at progress - a narrow and a broad way.

The narrow way would focus purely on product - in this way the Ford GT40 would be seen to be far superior to the Model T.

The broad view however would reverse that decision - as the tin lizzie changed the way ordinary people lived their lives far more than a 40" high supercar that smashed Ferarri at Le Mans.

So, while geeks may look at the ipad and view it lame compared to a modbook - the rest of the world may take a different view, not for the specs of the machine, but more for its potential to change the way non-geeks make use of tech.

no... "people" do not fly from the UK to buy iPads. self-indulgent, insignificant, privileged mites with extremely flawed priorities fly from the UK to buy iPads.

you can keep the dream alive, but no one in their right mind is going to pay double for an iPad from eBay

.

I think if I had the choice of flying or paying double, I would chose to fork out the ebay account, hehe.

i'd go back to new york even if there wasn't an iPad. :D

But the Original York is just an hour away by train. :p

it's not difficult to understand. some people, including myself, are long time apple users who have become disenchanted by what they're turning into. the iPad and all that it represents is the current reminder of how completely lame they have become. you're not forced to take it personally.

self-indulgent, insignificant, privileged mites with extremely flawed priorities fly from the UK to buy iPads.

Arrogance and smugness cuts both ways.

I don't really give a crap about any other country. it's irrelevant to my needs and my life. Why should I care whether or not Uzbekistan gets an iPad the same day as me? Call me egocentric, but the only thing I care about is when I can get my hands on my iPad. I could care less about you, my neighbor, or the rest of the world for that matter. :D

It's an AMERICAN company.

That makes most if not all of its merchandise overseas. Sorry bud, America is irrlevant when it comes to the operation of Apple. They could move to some backwards country and it wouldnt make a difference.

Ah to be a Yorkshireman - the winners of life's lottery.

Who needs cream cheese and bagels in some arriviste new-world knock off when you can stagger down cobbled streets of the original into the Evil Eye for a swift one?

New york?
New Coke! :D

Too right mate, I'd much rather have the original than this fancy new-fangled York.

An Apple Store in York would be nice though, and I'd be first in line with my job application. :)

(Who'd have thought that a thread about the US release of the iPad would culminate with two blokes talking about Yorkshire! Just goes to show we rule the world, secretly.)

Makes a change from the geek-spats. :D

I suppose.

Just come back, not from York, but from a very nice pub not too far out of York, and I can honestly state that I'd much rather be there on a Sunday night doing the quiz than at some fancy cafe any day of the week :)

New on weekdays, depending on where you are can be quite nice

Haha, this IS going off topic, so, uum...

...oh yeah, the iPad! 3rd of April huh? I wonder when us Brits will get them.
:p

see what I mean people flying from the UK to NY! They will surely pay double on ebay for a iPad... So the question still is how much will these tablets sell on ebay for the day after release?? We will see.....

Heck with that I would be happy to ship them to any of my UK friends for cost.

I am a little hesitant about pre-ordering. I want the iPad on day one and although Fedex has Saturday delivery its flakey at best. So I guess I will pre-register (or whatever they call it) and pick it up in the store.

At least iPad sales will go alot faster than iPhone. Since all they need to do is swipe your credit card. No credit checks nor checking if you get the lowest price.

Magical eh? I thought this was about the new Harry Potter world at Universal Florida for a second there. Still looks like an oversized iPod Touch to me (not all bad, but I'd like to see the full OSX available with the Touch interface running like Front Row or something and some USB ports on the thing. And why oh why didn't they include a few dedicated buttons and a pad for GAMING on the thing since it's clearly targeted for that market now. Not ALL games work that well from a touch screen....

There are modbooks for that kind of thing

a full OSX would be like putting a v8 in scooter

For every time you would need that kind of power - there would be a dozen other times when you would curse its bulk and thirst for power.

The markets this thing is aimed at are the 90% of people that think a kernel is something you make popcorn from.

It does everything an iphone does and has a full iWork suite.

That is more than enough for most ordinary people.

And as a result - it is light and clutter free.

Since when is OSX so darn bulky that it would run like crap on a 2010 computer, even if it is slower than the latest Intel? It runs just fine on my 1.8GHz G4. Just because something is "small" that doesn't mean it has to be "lite" on features (especially when you consider they plan to offer a DOCK for the thing! What's the point of a dock if it's not a real Mac? Just to type while in the park? That's added bulk so it wouldn't be useful. At home, you would need a real computer or else you cannot SYNC the thing. But why should anyone "have" to sync it when it's fully capable of running the full version of OSX?

I would not want to lose all my "real" applications to run iPod Touch ones (which are nice on the iPod Touch, but are a bit of a joke for a REAL computer, not to mention you are limited to programs that only Apple "allows" (i.e. good luck getting Firefox for your iPad or running a C64 emulator or anything else Apple won't allow). It doesn't even have a card reader to get pictures into the thing (USB would be helpful there as well). It's large enough to have a MUCH larger drive in it, but then again, what good does it do to have a large drive if you cannot even sync your iPod from it? In other words, what good is this thing on a TRIP? I'd have to take my MBP with me ALSO or I'd be unable to do anything useful like import photos, edit photos, sync my iPod Touch (can't fit that iPad into my pocket for headphone/music use while walking or whatever so I'd still need the iPod and BOTH would need a REAL Mac or PC to get photos onto it).

The point is this device is NEEDLESSLY LIMITED. It's large enough to be a "real" computer (Apple does not offer a sub-compact Macbook so this thing is as close as it gets unless you count the Macbook Air, which is just STUPID (i.e. it's still HUGE, just "thin" and costs a LOT). It's fine if Apple doesn't want to offer certain categories of computer models, but then they should license OSX out for those categories to someone that does want to offer them. Why should I have to run Windows or Linux just to get a sub-compact computer if all my software library is Macintosh software? That's what is so aggravating about it all. Some of us just want to be able to get the latest hardware choices without having to resort to hacking (which is a bit anti-Mac in nature since they're supposed to "just work" not have to do a bunch of work to get them to even load OSX).

I'm just afraid this thing is the wave of the future for the Apple product lines. Apple seems to be "dumbing down" OSX for the masses of Generation Lost who apparently don't "Need No Education" (as if OSX is that hard to use to begin with).

The iPad is not meant for you.

It is meant for the other 90% of the population who would like computers a lot more if it wasn't for all that darn technology.

Browsing, emails, music, video, apps, game photos and a decent battery life in a light and reasonably affordable package - that is what non-techy people want.

That is the market the iPad i aimed at.

What do you think of the modbook? RTat sounds much more what you are looking for.

I think it's too darn expensive for any sane person to consider (after you buy the Macbook and then pay through the nose to have it converted) for what ought to cost about $600 in the PC World. Price wise, the iPad is right where it should be. Capability-wise, it's just a big iPod Touch and not much more. Apple is only able to command it's high-end prices because it has zero competition for hardware that works with OSX (without hacking). Essentially, if you want the OSX operating system, you have to buy overpriced, undervalued hardware from Apple since the justice department has no brains to go after them for anti-trust behavior (and no I do not want to start another anti-trust argument thread as it's pointless to bicker with those that disagree whether they even qualify). I just know if HP, Lenovo, etc. could offer notebooks and sub-notebooks and pad computers with OSX pre-installed, they would be selling like hotcakes and Apple would have to either compete or go out of business because NO ONE in their right mind would pay $2000 for a MBP if you could get one with better specs for half the price. And don't tell me Apple has better quality hardware because their track record the past few years has been terrible for notebooks (yellow screens, non-responsive keyboard issues, poor latches, buggered Nvidia GPUs, etc.) That sort of thing wouldn't fly with an alternative source of OSX compatible hardware to openly compete against them.

right, so you want a full spec OSX touch screen tablet computer for about the price of an iphone.

What is the current rival at that price?
