You need a MacBook Pro (I know it, you know & the Canadian people know it)

Posts such as these on every thread are simple tiresome.
Apple is a big company and working on many things at the same time - not every announcement is an indication that "your desired product" is being ignored.

Besides, I love my 17" unibody MBP... summer '09 model. Nothing wrong with it.

Off to the iggy list for you!

You iggy-meister! Even Horace and Jasper know that the comment you replied to wasn't about MBPs getting ignored...it was just an observation of the time-line and a hope that the MBP would show up!

The reason for the hype is that nobody wants to buy a laptop that's going to be refreshed the next day! I only have a little 8-core Mac Pro and need a laptop for an upcoming trip to Canada to collect some puppies and visit someone calling people "iggy" on this forum. Anyway...the cost for renting a Mac is FAR more than the restock fee on a purchase and return. It just feels to inky to do that though. I'd much rather buy a shiny new Mac with Google's new Dalmation locator.

You don't have to be in the CN Tower to clearly see the issue here, ehhh iggy-meister?

Ughhh - gotta run - Anita's here with my coffee.

The iPad will be way bigger than Jesus' resurrection.

Well you beat me to the punch with a Jesus remark, but my first thought was that they selected Easter weekend as a subtle subliminal message that this device was indeed the reincarnation of the Jesus Device (i.e., the second, improved version, of the iPhone paradigm).

Wrong. The iPhone prints, so there's no reason to believe the iPad won't.

It doesn't print natively. So, for example, you can't browse in Safari and print a page. You can't chart a route in google maps and print it. You can't print photos from the photo app. You can't print from the email app (ironic that the iPad video shows the guy open an email with a boarding pass - guess he deleted it because he couldn't print it anyways).

Limited? Which common formats won't it view (other than Flash which isn't a media codec, anyway)? The iPad views all the formats that 99% of the population needs.

Compare Common media formats to the limited scope supported by the iPad:avi, divx, xvid, wmx, aiff, flac, ogg, ra, wma, etc. Most streaming media on the web (i.e. as you browse the net) isn't supported, even if it isn't flash.

Wrong. You most certainly can. Not all files and not all applications, but that's the entire purpose of the device. If you want a laptop, get a laptop.

One app doesn't have access to the same files as another app (including apps that work with the same types of files, such as Pages and DocumentsToGo), and there is no way, outside of an app, to view any files at all. It doesn't mount as a USB mass storage device on a computer either so you can't transfer files back and forth from it.

Why would you need a laptop for that? My iPhone apps work with plenty of files; I want access to them.

Wrong. I attach photos to my emails on the iPhone all the time. There's no reason to believe the iPad will be any different.

Not from the email app you don't (you must open photos first). The OS doesn't support sending anything other than a picture. To attach any other file you must have a specific app which works ONLY in that app. So, if you are writing an email and think, "oh, I should attach this document", you have to lose your work, start in a new app to attach the document, and compose in that app. In contrast, the photo library is accessible throughout any app that utilizes it because of the API's that support it. While picture files are supported, support for any general file is not.

And you know this-how?

The capabilities of the camera connection kit is well documented.

So you admit you were lying when you said you couldn't print? You can print what's on the screen. It hardly matters if you need to launch another app. Not to mention, of course, that you still don't know if the iPad works the same way or has printing built in.

Installing a printing app doesn't suddenly provide support for the feature through the OS. You still can't print from any other app, including Safari, email, google maps, your calender, contacts, or any other third-party app. It really does matter that you need to launch another app when that other app isn't the app you want to print from and doesn't have the same function. For example, how are you going to print a list of to-do's from a to-do app? That "other app" has absolutely no support for to-do's from another app.

It is possible that printing is some hidden feature, but I doubt it, plus you still can't plug in a printer.

Really? Who told you that?

The iPhone has been updated several times - for free. What makes you so certain that it won't accept 3.2 or 4.0?

Whoosh! You either missed the sarcasm, or failed to read what I was quoting, which as a silly nit-pick about how the iPad doesn't use the same OS as the iPhone because it runs 3.2, irrelevant since the iPhone will be updated to run the same OS as the iPad soon enough.

Obviously, you're someone who gets off on spreading lies about a product you've never used and have no plans to buy because you can't stand that other people might have something different than you. A good psychiatrist can probably help you with that.

Spreading lies about a product? LOL get a grip dude.

I don't care what people buy or not, I was just pointing out why people call the iPad a "giant iPod Touch". I'm critical of the iPad because it is a tablet form-factor that was introduced as a new product of category between a smartphone and laptop which is supposed to be better at some tasks than both of them. If that is the case, why does it use the same OS as a smartphone? Why does it use the same UI, same grid of icons, and lack any additional features appropriate for a tablet?

Once again, you're missing the entire point. While your statement is technically true, it's irrelevant. You CAN play music in the background while you read or browse the web. You can receive IM notifications in the background.

What you can't do is have multiple third party apps open at the same time. But since app switching is so quick and easy, who cares (other than mindless geeks who have a checklist of things THEY want - but don't know why). Are you going to watch a video and read a book AT THE SAME TIME? Are you going to be browsing the web while you're playing a game? Not bloody likely

Actually, you receive IM notifications in the foreground via a giant pop-up that interrupts whatever you are doing. I would also argue that app switching is so "quick and easy". On a desktop computer you can switch programs with a single mouse click and aren't forced to close your current app.

With a new tablet form-factor and much more screen space, they couldn't add some kind of task bar or dock to let you switch apps with one tap? It would be such a simple feature and make the device that much nicer to use.

Actually, I can see the issue - and the CN Tower right now.

My point is valid... those I ignored were spamming the thread with off topic crap. New MBP will come whenever the mobile processors Apple has chosen are available.

I have a 2006 MacBook... it is still working well. Just is space (drive size) and screen sized challanged for me. My son loves it though.

I have a 2007 MBP 15"... it still works well. It wasn't replaced because it was slow or unable to do what I need it to do; it was replaced because my needs shifted - I only use a laptop now so more screen space was required. Also the old MBP was not easy/cheap to upgrade in terms of drive space...
My other son loves it... it flies after I rebuilt it with Snow Leopard.

Any way... back to the iPad release.

I'm unrepentant... silly trolls with off topic posts... will get ignored.

Yes as stated above.

I'm not seeing the "attach" option/button in the mail client, buddy:

Choosing a file to email from within in app is a poor solution, plus you won't be able to attach more than one type of file (like a photo and word processing document).

've said more than enough. Just wait until the device comes out. All of the things you've said are possible.

We'll see. If true, then it's not the device they demonstrated over a month ago. I'm not holding my breath.

i hate (well, not really, but do you sense the mocking alert?)...i hate people who don't realize the wi-fi model's delayed THREE days (...)

If you're in the US, if you're in The Netherlands the date changed from end of march to "we'll let you know sometime in the future if it will ever ship in your country".

Its good to finally have a date. Also good that they have indicated that the UK will get it late april.

I have been a bit out of the loop with the ipad since launch, will it be able to play avi/divx files? or will these need to be converted?

LOL stop downloading illegal content.

Copy. And. Paste. get over it

So pre-orders are only available through the apple store from what I am reading, but I read something saying that the iPads will also be sold through Best Buy. Will pre-orders also be done through Best Buy as well? I am wondering if they will be getting stock of the iPads in April as well.

The comments you are referring to just said that they would pursue other options like Best Buy, but initially they will only be available through Apple's direct channels.

oh ok, i was under the impressions that they would be sold through other outlets as well from day 1. disappointing since I have been sitting on a $300 best buy gift certificate.

Nice way to treat your UK developers, Apple.

Even if we get an intermediary to send us iPads from the US on the sly, we'd still be at least a week behind in getting our apps fully tested and ready for the iPad App Store. A month, if you wait to buy properly.

Being in the first 1000 apps on the store is radically different to being app #37,212 or whatever in terms of opportunities.

And releasing the WiFi and 3G versions on the same day is a real sales mess up too. I was going to buy the WiFi straight away for development, then buy a 3G one and hand the WiFi one to the wife.. now I might as well just buy one 3G one!

I'm waiting for the 3G

I know, the economics are less than favorable for the 3G vs the WiFi, but where I see it working for me is when my wife and I are on a road trip, she drives, I surf.
I can't do that with WiFi.
I can also surf at the beach or a park as long as there is 3G connectivity.
Lastly, I have noticed that "free" WiFi hotspots can be slower than 3G on my 3G iPhone (no xp with 3GS), I assume that this is because many freeloaders splitting the bandwidth of the hotspot?
Its the old adage; "you get what you pay for"

The other upside is I get to hear how folks are doing with the WiFi version and see if there are any execution errors coming out of the gate.

I know I will be lusting after all those WiFi iPads while I wait, but for my uses, I think it is time well spent.

To all of you WiFi Easter iPad adopters, good luck and enjoy! :)

& don 4get that the 3G has the GPS! I'll pay extra 4 it even though I'm not crazy 'bout the 3G ;-)
