The fact that we need a companion app in 2015 to allow simultaneous output on two speakers shows a SEVERE gap in AirPlay that I'm frustrated Apple hasn't yet solved. This type of thing should be integrated, not relegated to a third-party app (okay, still technically Apple) that can do it better than iOS can natively.

On top of that, AirPlay itself is aging - it's a years-old solution showing its age in a 2015 world. My phone can't fall asleep while sending something to my Apple TV? Really?

Was hoping Apple TV would mean a new AirPlay implementation, but it looks like more of the same. At least the Beats team gets it.

Whichever pill you choose, there would be no AirPlay either way.

Really Apple? Release a wireless speaker without AirPlay?

Its almost as if they don't want me buying their accessory products.

The Oontz is the best sounding bluetooth speaker for the money. They don't make the original anymore, but the XL still sounds great, even though its a bit more expensive http://www.theoontz.com/oontz-xl. For under $100 its great.

No AirPlay??
Doesn't Airplay need wifi rather than just bluetooth? these things are designed to be portable, so short of fitting them with their own wifi access point I'm not sure how airplay would work in the middle of a field on a camping trip...

Admittedly it would be a nice feature for at home where wifi is available but that isn't the intended use for these things and much better wireless speakers exist for that scenario.

Or the Boom 2, or the Roll, or the MegaBoom.

I have the ue boom and the mini. For overall utility and sound I agree that UE is/was the best Bluetooth speaker out although jbl has recently put out out speakers with the exact functionality mainly waterproofing and ability to link speakers.

IMO the best sound still goes to the Bose soundlnk although it seems to be suited more for indoor use rather than outdoor.

Don't go with ue boom if bass is your priority. Not that it doesn't have any it's just not its main feature sound wise.

Pioneer has a speaker like this although I don't think they make it anymore. I have the non mobile version and it's awesome.

I'm researching speakers now (Beats, Sonos, Bose) if you think beats have poor sound you got any suggestions?

Hmm what's your budget?

Googles chrome cast audio is a cheap option to add to really good, cheap computer speakers and have AirPlay like functionality for cheap.

Maybe, but how much better the very same hardware sounds since Apple bought them than before. Amazing how an ownership change can magically transform the sound quality of the very same products. ;)

Beats haters don't care about that. They just care that it ha a "b" on it so it's automatically trash.

F the pill!!!!
Just get my Sonos to work with Apple Music or I start thinking of alternative services.

Ah, the Beats Pill. Tool of the insufferable and inconsiderate jerks who like to play their music in public. These things should be illegal.
You mean like the internet, which allows insufferable jerks to share their opinion in public?

Anyway, these things are great for picnics, great for the backyard, great for whatever room you're working in that doesn't have speakers...

While there are a fair share of audiophile snobs in the world, it pales in comparison to people who are perfectly content to listen to awful audio and don't even realize how awful it is.

Just last night I got home and sat down to watch The Flash with my wife. As soon as it started I realized that it was TiVoed off an SD channel. She was like "really, I couldn't tell." While I enjoyed the episode, it was a very sub-optimal experience for me, for her it was just fine.

You may call audiophiles snobs, but it bothers me to watch SD content and to listen to crappy audio. If you can't tell the difference, then buy these kinds of products, but to criticize people who actually can tell and care is no better than being a snob.

Uh people do use speakers like these for a home office allowing them to hear music without headphones in the privacy of their own home. Please don't show such ignorance.

iOS 8 and AppleTV 3 introduced AirPlay peer-to-peer, which does not require devices to be on the same wi-fi network (probably using some type of zeroconf/wifi direct). However, to prevent others from hijacking your AppleTV I believe there is a security code on screen. Not sure how this would work with a speaker, but maybe if it were recognized as a device that had already previously paired via Bluetooth it could allow AirPlay as well. It's all academic, though, as it doesn't seem AirPlay will be supported here.
