I couldn't find a number for how many iOS users there are, but the latest numbers show 316 million iOS devices have been sold, so that means per each iOS device, about 77 applications have been downloaded. That's much higher than I would have expected.

I know people like big numbers, but I'm not sure how significant the number of apps is given that many of them are less app and more replication of a Web page, or serve to make a Web page's content more usable on a handheld device.

My iPhone tells me i have purchased 463 iphone apps since 2009 (2 devices)

Also.. How can anyone possibly spend $10,000.00 USD on apps? Couldn't it be used at an Apple store instead?

It works for the whole iTunes store, but yes, I couldn't spend that much on digital products. However, two thunderbolt displays would be nice

If my math is correct, it will take about 8 days 2 hours and 55 minutes from now..

I tried to find a link to the old story with no luck, but I recall (many years ago) a similar prize give away that had some complicated tax problem. That the winner had to pay tax on the prize?

What ever happened to that, did he have to pay?

(sorry, just really curious :))

But what are you going to do with a $10k gift card to the App Store? All the apps are like $1.99 or $2.99. You're going to load up your 1-2 iOS devices with 3000 apps each? :) Seriously. Unless the App Store sells other stuff besides apps that I am not aware of.

Would have been nice if it was an Apple Store card so you could buy a few Macs/iPads AND THEN some software.

Code:

Nothing special there

That developer may well get free publicity that they could not buy for 10X the value of that gift card.

The dev has no way of knowing what individual it was. It would be up to Apple to say your app was the 25th Billion download, congrats, here's a $50 gift card.

Who's going to buy $10,000 worth of apps? Mind you guys, this is only for the AppStore.

"Prizes. One (1) winner will receive one (1) App Store Gift Card for credit in an amount equal to USD $10,000, redeemable in the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBook Store, as available in the country in which the winner is located. Total US Retail Value of all prizes is $10,000.00."

Just so you know, the countdown is just a programed animation; it does not reflect the actual number downloaded. So, how did you figure it'd take 8 days?

My guess would be more like about a month.

If it is going to take about 4 years to reach 25 billion then

25 billion divided by 4 years divided by 365 days in a year = 17 123 287 downloads per day.

Since there are about 700 million downloads remaining then 700 divided by 17 million per day is about 45 days. However, since the rate of downloading is probably increasing the number will probably be closer to 30 days.

it would take me decades to spend a $10,000 app store gift card.

it would take me seconds to spend a $10,000 apple gift card.

Seriously! only with a minor change above.

Well actually, although I could spend it in seconds, if I got an $10,000 Apple gift card right now I wouldn't buy much immediately. I would wait and get an iPad 3, iPhone 5/6, MBA ivy bridge, iMac ivy bridge, and iTV. Then by the end of the year I'd still have about $3,000 left for what Apple comes out with next year :) geeze it would be so grand

Don't forget about Xserve and Mac Pro, oh wait...

Figure that its on an animation based on the past. If the flow remains constant it will take 8 days. But as it gets closer to 25 billion, it will increase. Therefore thats the only variable. Of course no one will be able to truly figure it out but its an educated guess. The ticker is rising 1000 every 1.2 seconds.

Music. And videos.

Don't think "instant gratification". Take the long term view. Never again in your life paying for music.

Wow, can you be any cheaper? You can win more money on a scratch ticket with better odds. Even talk shows like Oprah give more to their audiences. For a company that is considered the most valuable in the world, $10Gs is absolute joke. And it's not even cash money that their giving you, their giving you credits to their own product. Costing them absolutely next to nothing. Keep up the great public image of being so giving and generous Apple.

Mac OS store means unlimited upgrades for life. Mountain Lion and all his cubs will be mine....mwahahaha
