I hardly think that means "no hardware".
While I agree this can’t be interpreted as an assurance that there’ll be no hardware announcements, there’s no need anymore to cram multiple updates on a single event, unless they’re somewhat related.

A new product, developers would be eager to see and find out the possibilities they offer (say, ar glasses). An update to an existing product, I don’t think we’ll see a lot of those going forward, either a silent update or a separate online event.

Being the developer event this is where they might announce products for developers. Some kind of VR glasses makes sense so that developers can begin making apps that work with them. Laptops make sense, also, because developers are always looking for new laptops. Also, it’s been a minute since the fall Silicon announcement. Does Apple really want to go almost an entire years without a new Silicon announcement?

Others may disagree, but I would love to see iOS, TVOS, iPad OS, and macOS all have the same major version number going forward. While I love we are finally on macOS 11, I think consumers would better understand if all the versions where equal. And for universal apps we just check for major OS version being > 14.

Is it just me who is wondering if the glasses on the invite mean anything specific related to Apple Glass?
It would kind of be hard for the calendar to reflect off her face without her wearing glasses...

Either way, this will be a great event. I prefer the taped events over the live ones anyway...

Interesting we're hearing about this but no Spring/April event? Maybe it'll be a surprise product release (if anything is coming this Spring still).

Past Apple events can help predict future Apple events, so seems unlikely they would hold an event now but of course that is not set in stone. I'm sure someone is already looking up if Apple has ever had an event in-between announcing WWDC and WWDC itself.

2018
WWDC Announcement: March 13
Spring Event: March 27

2019
WWDC Announcement: March 14
Spring Event: March 25

The next crop of AS Macs will be hopefully announced, M1X/M1Z graphic boosted/32 & 64 GB RAM capable chips for the higher end Mac Mini, higher end 13” MBP and the 16” MBP & iMacs. They should also come with double the IO capacity...
Higher end MBP 13" will probably become a 14" in the same overall size as the old 13" according to rumors (so a redesigned chasis).

You're the hero we don't deserve. So perhaps an all virtual/pre-recorded Spring event is still coming soon? It would seem kind of silly to host something in mid April only to then have full WWDC barely 2 months later, but WWDC is supposed to be software focused so maybe Apple doesn't look at these events the same way.

Right, I think the current chassis design of the MBP is dead. Although they tweaked the 4th gen's keyboard and changed the 15-inch to the 16-inch in 2019, it's virtually the same chassis from 2016. Below are the update intervals for the MBP:

1st Gen: 2006 (transition from PPC to Intel)
2nd Gen: 2008
3rd Gen: 2012
4th Gen: 2016
5th Gen (virtually same as 4th gen): 2019
6th Gen: 2021 (almost overdue if you consider above trends)

I think Apple will keep the MBA since it's more entry level and received a new chassis barely 2 years ago.

I hope they implement obviously needed features. I’ve been playing with an S21 Ultra and simply making a folder on iOS or iPadOS is so tedious. Why can’t I create a folder, than add every app I want in that folder? I have to drag every app out of the stupid App Library and play whack a mole to put it where I want it.
