What happens to photos if I use a phone with ios 16.2 and Monterey? Is it gonna be e2e encrypted?

This is a great step forward. A little late, but better now than never. I do wish it was enabled by default. Maybe that will come at a later time.

If I’m reading this right, does this mean that Messages can now be encrypted even if Backups are enabled? Big news!
I don't see the article mentioning such a change. It says that Messages is already considered e2e when not backed up. It seems this will stay that way which is bogus of course.

Holy ****. I never thought they'd do it. I just bought a 2 year plan for Proton a couple weeks ago since they have E2EE everything (though much less features capability yet). Currently banging my head against the wall.

Credit where credit is due. This sounds really good. Never thought I'd see the day where my iCloud Drive and Photos will be secured by E2E encryption.

Still, device-side scanning of my photos is NOT ok and this will not change anything about that issue.
Just curious, are you referring to the CSAM protection or just general Photos ML to detect faces, categorize photos, etc?

Proton still better. Today they released the Proton Drive iOS App and soon on MacOS. Your ProtonMail emails are E2EE. I have been using Proton for the last 6 Years and the last 4 paying the Plus for my primary email with my own domain.

Someone has a short memory. A few years ago Apple wanted to introduce encryption for backups but the FBI blocked it because it could no longer access the data. What has changed now? The only particular one is on an opt-in basis so millions of people will not activate encryption and the FBI will still have access to the data.

Happy holidays from Apple.

Encrypted iCloud Drive, back-ups and Photos is a huge huge deal - and a fantastic gift.

It'll be interesting to see if they move forward with a version of iCloud email, contacts and calendar that are encrypted.

Q: Does anyone know if there are encrypted standards out there?

Or will Apple have to make up their own propriety versions (like Proton does).

Just be aware you won't be able to enable this if you have devices on older OS versions. I have an iMac that's still on Monterey holding me back at the moment.

Advanced Data Protection: iCloud Backup and everything inside it is end-to-end encrypted, including the Messages in iCloud encryption key.
