This is huge. Props to Apple!
And I will say that it was very smart of them to NOT announce this publicly first without much time because otherwise they'd have had time to hear from all the usual authoritarian suspects who will complain about it.

Ahem, catch up on today's news: CSAM is done! Apple officially announced it will NOT be doing this.Credit where credit is due. This sounds really good. Never thought I'd see the day where my iCloud Drive and Photos will be secured by E2E encryption.
Still, device-side scanning of my photos is NOT ok and this will not change anything about that issue.
Agreed. Makes me wonder if that lawsuit of recent about non secure devices from Apple may have been the reason for this?Excellent stuff! Glad Apple is taking data protection very seriously.
Or maybe that story where other people's photos were showing up in corrupted data in iCloud for Windows? I still wonder how the freaking hell that happened, because even though Apple had the keys, they were supposedly unique per user.Agreed. Makes me wonder if that lawsuit of recent about non secure devices from Apple may have been the reason for this?

Obviously not. Apple has to comply with the laws they have. Be glad you were born in America or Europe. where you are protected from unlawful searches by governments in your constitution. In China too, Tim?
Sorry, not understanding your question?that's is only available in the iOS 16?
Note that, according to https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/security/sec973254c5f/, this requires all devices signed in to your Apple ID to be on the latest OS version. Meaning you’re out of luck if you have older connected devices.
No. You need to be on macOS 13.1 to use the new feature. More generally, all devices signed in to your Apple ID must be on the newest OS versions. It’s not compatible with existing OS versions. What happens to photos if I use a phone with ios 16.2 and Monterey? Is it gonna be e2e encrypted?
I mean, they could provide an update for older OS versions, as they sometimes do for security bugfixes.True, but it has a good reason
"This requirement prevents a previous version of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, or watchOS from mishandling the newly-created service keys by re-uploading them to the available-after-authentication HSMs in a misguided attempt to repair the account state."

I’m still using the OG iPhone SE as a secondary device at home (and my iPads are still on 14.x due to the terrible UI changes with iPadOS 15), and this means that I’m forced to choose between abandoning it or foregoing E2EE.
I’m seeing the same thing. And this is a launch day iPhone 14 Pro Max. I bet it’s because of the beta.View attachment 2124924Guess I’ll have to wait a little bit longer..
I tend to only upgrade iOS every 2-3 years, because the pros don’t always outweigh the cons, and I also tend to not upgrade to the last-supported version on out-of-support devices, due to performance concerns. I guess this just means I’ll only be able to use the E2EE feature a couple years later.I've mostly given up on trying to be in the Apple ecosystem and not on the latest versions (or close), as this is just how Apple seems to roll anymore.
Which are most people. Go down the street and ask if they know what end-to-end encryption is. If the option is opt-in it is for a very specific reason. Nothing is left to chance. The non tech savvy people.
Yeah, mine is a launch day 14 Pro. I wonder what Apple considers "recently added"?I’m seeing the same thing. And this is a launch day iPhone 14 Pro Max. I bet it’s because of the beta.

Haha oops you’re right I can’t read!I don’t know yet for sure, thus why I said if
Yes. You need 16.2.I need the latest iOS version to active? I'm still in iOS 15
I can't see this on my phone https://www.apple.com/newsroom/imag...anced-Data-Protection_inline.jpg.large_2x.jpg
or where active it? I don't get it?
Its called paranoia.Guessing everything has a back door at this point![]()
