I'm actually ok with the subscription model. I don't do a lot of video editing. In the past I had purchased a copy of Final Cut Pro Studio for several hundred $$$, but didn't really us it as a much as I I thought I would. Now I primarilly edit in imovie, but occasionally miss having something a bit more capable. Now, when I have the need, I can subscribe for a month, edit my video, then cancel the subscription until I need it again.

I'm sure I'm in the minority though for this. Maybe they should give you the option of a 1 time expensive purchase or a monthly subscription.

I think the subscription model is obnoxious, but I totally understand it.
In the 2000s, whenever a new version of Finalcut or Logic was released, you had to go out and buy it. Usually full price too, and back then both were much closer to $1000.
Meanwhile, if you bought Final Cut Pro X on day one in 2011, you’ve gotten 12 years of free updates. And it shows, seeing as the anpp only gets a major update once every four years or so. outside of that, it’s barely touched.
So a subscription model is exactly what I would’ve expected, hopefully that means it gets maintained better.
And I still hope there’s a one time purchase option coming down the road.

Weird that their computer counterparts have been one-time-only payments for more than a decade and the ipad versions will only be subscription.

Apple will watch the enthusiastic uptake or staunch rejection of software subscriptions on iPad and then "fix" that "problem" accordingly in future releases on Mac. I wonder which way it will go. 💰💰💰

Not only have they been one-time payments, but at least in the case of Final Cut Pro X, it's all been one paid version all this time. That is, (unless I'm really mistaken about this), if you bought Final Cut back in 2011, you are still getting big, comprehensive updates to this day. I bought it in I think 2015 or so and have never been prompted to pay again.

I assume(d) Apple was doing this as a way to contribute to the appeal of the Mac to professional content producers -- but seeing this, I worry it's going to turn into another cash cow.

I think the subscription option is nice. Many content creators are part timers, so it's nice to pay just a few 5USD when needed. That being said, they should have offered a lifetime purchase option, just like their desktop version.
