Which means it will take a really long time for this to be commonplace as this means everyone that needs to check an ID have to have the reader hardware. Who’s selling that and for how much? I don’t think small businesses would adopt this as it’s much cheaper to just check your physical ID by an employee. Imo it has to become a mandate before this can be commonplace.
Liquor stores already check the barcode on the back of your license this will just have some similar mechanism. Many businesses already have the hardware.

The Apple implementation has yet to be seen. For all we know, we may still have to keep the state's DL app for instances such as this one, since it doesn't seem like there is a way to pull up the barcode, but who knows?. (For those in Arizona, the app is called Arizona Mobile ID).

I find it funny that Apple has not mentioned anything about using this feature to pick up items at the Apple Store. Currently they want physical ID cards when you pick something up at the Apple Store that you have ordered online. I wonder if they will get ID scanners (or use the existing credit card readers to read it), or if they will funnily, not accept the Digital ID. I have used my state's mobile ID app to pick up stuff from Apple without issue, but funny enough, you would think this would be a feature from the wallet app.

I’ve never been asked for an ID?

I've had photos of my license in my phone for years. The photo folder is called "virtual wallet" and I keep backup photos of all the things in my wallet in that photo folder. The very few times I have forgotten my wallet, showing a photo of my ID and explaining that I forgot my wallet was usually met with a warm response.

Where does this happen? 'cuz I've not had them do anything more than look at the front of my DL in GA or SC

Can't wait to hear the conspiracy theories about security risks of having your drivers license scanned into your phone.
SIM hijacking isn’t solved and definitely real. Consumers expressing security concerns is understandable and rational imo.

Agreed sim hijacking is not solved. But you could always still have your wallet stolen or lost. At least having a digital copy you still can have a hard copy at home.

Thanks for the considered comment. However, two more issues:

1. My wallet only gives someone access to my credit cards and cash but not my bank account or investment accounts. The latter are my biggest concern and not the former.

2. I would notice the absence of my wallet almost immediately and I can take steps to physically secure it. SIM hijacking happens without your knowledge and thieves could clean out your accounts within hours and you'd only know after it had occurred. To me this is the most insidious risk because I can't control it.
