Keep those batteries charged. Make sure you have spare cables in your car.
I haven’t seen anything, but it’s possible that this will be available even when the device is powered off.

For example, as a backup digital keys will work independently of the devices power due the ability for NFC to act as a passive device that would become “excited” when brought into very close proximity of the master device.

I haven’t seen anything indicating that it will be implemented that way. But It’s certainly possible.

Great. So there is absolutely no way to verify that the person holding the phone is the data being scanned. The database will be compromised and while the photo might match the rest of the information won't.
Do you understand how any of this works? Your physical license has a barcode on it that references the same database as the token the iPhone will pass. So if you are saying the database will be compromised you are saying it will be compromised for everything including physical IDs.

You can't just pass data to the scanner you have to register the ID beforehand (validating the data) and it has to be in the secure enclave. You can't create a fake ID and throw it in the enclave then hack the government database to reference your picture against another profile.

This is aruguably more secure than the simple ID checks done now of name/picture matches plastic. The transition of a person looking at an ID vs scanning Device/Card then comparing person to Database backend is going to happen no matter what.

This is the most fear mongering thing I think I have ever read.

It's another avenue for cops to get you to do something they have no right to ask you to do? Know your rights.

The phone contains the same token as the barcode on the back of your license. You don't unlock anything you let them pull your file up.
I’d also opt to share my license via my Apple Watch which no one I’d argue would ask you to take off!

I’m assuming when ID mode is activated from your accessing it in the wallet app that your phone can automatically lock and go to the Lock Screen/ID mode. Your phone is handed back to you or your done showing it and you click the power button to de-access the mode then unlock your phone again like normal. Duhhhhhhhh. Someone swipes up and then can peruse your phone and play your Minecraft if they run away with it hahaah no… sorry Maybe an NFC component be added in the future and they don’t even need to see your screen at at all. Like Samsung direct feature, you tap your phone onto the other phone and it shares details that way. Idk just ideas

Look. Either it shows info on the phone or it doesn’t. The benefit of the physical ID is that it can’t be changed by a third party while the person has it and does not contain any other data than the phone itself. if someone alters the real ID data on the barcode than it won’t match the ID itself. If there is no info visible on the phone than there is no way to be sure the database is accurate.

I already have the true AZ ID app from the PlayStore on my Note ultra. I will of course wait for Apple to implement theirs for the iPhone especially for the TSA features and to not have to show anything. I wish they could implement one for New York too.

yea, don't really want to be handing my phone over to the cops....

i'll keep my physical ID
Right. I see some people 'educating' you about the way the technology is supposed to work but to my mind the policeman is as likely to say 'hey something is wrong can I take your phone a bit closer to my car' or some such and before long you do have your phone hooked up to their device to scoop all your info from your phone. If the technology can be abused it will be abused and the stories will be horror stories.

It would be awesome if you could tie your ID to your boarding pass, i.e select boarding pass, set your phone on the reader, it reads the boarding pass, then auto switches it to ID, without ever having to touch the phone. (or even a double tap on the back of the phone to switch it)

That would be neat and helpful, especially as I travel with 2 children.

Please bring this to Victoria Australia. Police have already said it is acceptable if it is an app and not just a photo. I need a new wallet but really holding out for everything to be digital.

Apple today announced the first U.S. states that will be rolling out the ability for residents to add their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch. Arizona and Georgia will be the first states to support the feature, with Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah to follow, according to Apple.

Apple said select TSA security checkpoints in participating U.S. airports will be the first locations where customers can present their mobile driver's license or state ID in the Wallet app. Participating states and the TSA will share more information at a later date in regards to when and where mobile driver's licenses and IDs will be supported.

Apple is already in discussions with many more U.S. states as part of its plan to offer the feature nationwide in the future, according to Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, but no timeframe was provided.

The ability to add a driver's license or ID to the Wallet app is a feature of iOS 15, which will be publicly released later this year. Once a participating state begins offering this capability, customers will be able to tap the plus sign at the top of the Wallet app to begin adding their license or ID, and then simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch on an identity reader at a TSA checkpoint, without taking out their physical card.

Apple said the feature is designed with privacy and security in mind. When adding a driver's license or state ID card to the Wallet app, customers will be required to take a photo of their face, which will be securely provided to the issuing state for verification. As an additional measure, Apple said users will be prompted to complete a series of facial and head movements during the setup process.

Upon tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch on an identity reader, customers will see a prompt on their device displaying the specific information being requested by the TSA. Only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID is the requested identity information released from their device, according to Apple. Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to a TSA security officer to present their ID, the company added.

Apple said its mobile ID implementation supports the ISO 18013-5 standard, which sets clear privacy guidelines for presenting an ID through a mobile device.

This feature will expand upon the Wallet app's existing support for student IDs at select universities and colleges in the U.S. and Canada.

Of course no CA. Most technological state where tech literally started but so far behind in many ways.

I think it very reasonable that whenever new gee whiz tech is introduced, the first question is "how can this be abused by a bad actor?"

I live in Australia and I've had my Driver's licence on my phone for a couple of years now. It's great! I don't even carry a physical wallet anymore as my bankcards, Medicare card, and, most importantly, Bunnings Powerpass card, are also on my iPhone. The only things in my pockets are my phone and car/house keys.

CA is no where to be seen. Ironic that it’s the home state for Apple. Sucks to be us sometimes! USED to be CA was a leader :(

Hopefully this becomes a way of also verifying voter ID at the polls. It should speed things up.
This is an excellent idea considering everyone has a cell phone and the majority are iPhone owners. Taking it a step further, if Apple was invested in getting out the vote, they would have to figure out a way to get a valid ID for those who do not have a DL or state ID. Then they would have to get around the states who require an ID to vote and would be tripping over themselves trying to ban this type of identification.

I believe Apple has the means, the will, and the ingenuity to succeed with this. I mean who would have thought one day you would be able to take a valid EKG or detect a valid fall on your wrist resulting in a life saving 911 call? Apple thought, that's who.

"customers will be required to take a photo of their face,"

umm.... ya i can see why this would be good for verification but with anything digital, we know it can be faked as well afterwards..

photos can be edited before be put oline to make them look better than they aculally are etc...99% wouldn't be able to tell the difference, if done perfectly. :)

i'd still rather the old fashioned style any-day. Digital stuff is good, but why force everyone into it, then come back with "problems'? Use if, where its safe.. For instance, the vaccine certificates are already faked in the EU, and thats before AUstralia is up to snuff.

Even easier to fake analog/ paper vaccine certs...
