This is an excellent idea considering everyone has a cell phone and the majority are iPhone owners. Taking it a step further, if Apple was invested in getting out the vote, they would have to figure out a way to get a valid ID for those who do not have a DL or state ID. Then they would have to get around the states who require an ID to vote and would be tripping over themselves trying to ban this type of identification.

I believe Apple has the means, the will, and the ingenuity to succeed with this. I mean who would have thought one day you would be able to take a valid EKG or detect a valid fall on your wrist resulting in a life saving 911 call? Apple thought, that's who.
That would be an awesome idea if this could affect the voting process in a positive way (by making it easier for people).

From the Press Release:
  • Driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet are only presented digitally through encrypted communication directly between the device and the identity reader, so users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device.
Which means it will take a really long time for this to be commonplace as this means everyone that needs to check an ID have to have the reader hardware. Who’s selling that and for how much? I don’t think small businesses would adopt this as it’s much cheaper to just check your physical ID by an employee. Imo it has to become a mandate before this can be commonplace.

Queensland Transport finished it's trial one year ago and yet they are still to do a GM release. I guess that traffic infringement revenue is being spent on men with, 'stop / go' lollipops and useless lit up signs informing the traveller about non traffic events. Fortunately I had no need for my forgotten licence whilst away yesterday. Instead of electing which political party was to 'govern' us imagine if corporations ran our countries - in synchronicity, all American and Australian states would accept digital licences plus addition option.

I've been spamming our governments up here to partner with Apple and Google on Digital ID's (I figured the need for vaccine passports may be a good driver to get them motivated). Maybe Apple/Google weren't interested? (or maybe all of my emails were sorted into the big round file) *shrug*

I'm sure it will become commonplace one day - just wish it was ASAP!!! :)

The sooner the physical wallet is no more, the better!!! :)

So the phone need not be handed over for this to work. However, nothing prevents police from tricking people into handing phones over with getting the ID as a pretext. Are you really going to argue with a police officer who has a hand on a gun? Also, I can just imagine being asked to unlock the phone to 'make sure the driver's license isn't hacked'. No thanks.

Having this for passports, on the other hand, might be useful (indeed why the **** can't we apply for passports electronically?), since authorities at pretty much any international border can require you to unlock your phone on a whim (even if you are a citizen).

If I was staying in the Apple ecosystem I'd have jumped on this in a heartbeat, just as I did Apple Pay. No, it wouldn't have obviated the need for me to still carry my physical DL. Even if it had: I'd still have needed my physical wallet for a bunch of Other Stuff. (Registrations, proof-of-insurance, various medical cards, buyer's club cards, etc.) But I'd have regarded it a step in the right direction.

(Metro) Atlanta is, but most of the state is definitely not.

Considering that the Metro ATL population represents nearly 60% of the overall state population, I'm unsure just what "most" means to you in this context?

FYI:
Sure, there's plenty of rural farmland too, just like you find in most states that aren't the size of a postage stamp. Happens that there's pretty good broadband penetration in those areas too - which is handy since there's a lot of tech workers working remote outside the metro area.

When we went to Puerto Rico last month, we filled out info online and was emailed a QR code that they scanned and we were on our way.
Yeah, the vaccine ID is for locals only, it works with the state-approved DMV app which replaces the physical driver’s license and vaccination card. You can pay fines, schedule DMV appointments, transfer the title of your car and a few other things.
The QR code system is a godsend for people that work at the airport and those who visit us. We now have new vaccine mandates/restrictions and I’m all for it 👍🏻

Registration can stay in the car, along with proof of insurance (or use your insurance company’s app). Medical cards depends on your provider but some have a digital card as well. Buyers club cards can either be digitized or tied to a phone number that you’d enter on the PIN pad.

Sure, but, as I noted: If I was staying in the Apple ecosystem. I'm not.

Me too.

I see a lot of people posting on the forum talking about how they never carry a wallet or ID on them, and until recently, this just wouldn't work for me.

Now, maybe, but even if I used it, I would still carry a physical ID and CC.

It is a nice idea, but I will be a very late adopter.

I will be late adopter as well. I still carry physical credit cards and my ID. I carry copies of my registration and insurance on my phone because my glove box don’t lock and I don’t want my info accessible for someone to steal if my car get broken into.

I find it funny that Apple has not mentioned anything about using this feature to pick up items at the Apple Store. Currently they want physical ID cards when you pick something up at the Apple Store that you have ordered online. I wonder if they will get ID scanners (or use the existing credit card readers to read it), or if they will funnily, not accept the Digital ID. I have used my state's mobile ID app to pick up stuff from Apple without issue, but funny enough, you would think this would be a feature from the wallet app.
