I feel your pain, but because Apple dropped model numbers in their naming convention and knowing their MacBook Policy, I purchased AC+ with future proofing my purchase in mind. Last year there was discussion of a 6 mo upgrade cycle but everyone thought Apple would be crazy to do so. I was surprised they upgraded so quickly this year, but it was not completely unexpected.

I am going to make a full faith attempt to get upgraded at no additional cost. I think others should do so as well provided you have AC+ or are within the original warranty period if you did not. Apple can afford the loss and should learn a lesson (not that they should not have expected people to demand this change).

Talk about entitlement!!!

I am not even going to damage/destroy my iPad (3rd) Gen. It is still in pristene shape. This still lets me exchange it an unlimited number of times, and avoid having to pay a $49 exchange fee as it is not a problem due to ADH.

...

Either they will get tired of exchanging a 3rd Gen for a 3rd Gen, or they will provide me with a 4th Gen.

What now? You honestly think you can get Apple to exchange it over and over again, avoid the fee, and not get suspicious that you're trying to scam them? How stupid do you think they are?

I can swap out as many times as necessary, until they get tired of handing me iPad 3rd gens (defective because it gets hot if left at full brightness, sluggish in full Retna Games, etc). Defects that have been fixed with the iPad 4th gens; otherwise, why still sell 2nd Gen and drop the 3rd Gen if the 3rd Gen is not defective?

You're delusional if you think Apple will let you keep swapping it endlessly because "it's too hot". Most likely they'll say it's fine and give it back to you. And the reason they drop the iPad 3 is because the ipad 2 is cheaper to make and sell. The 3 isn't enough of a difference to sell alongside the 4. And keeping the 2 around makes the mini seem less out of date.

It has to do with expectations.

It's not Apple's fault people have unrealistic expectations. Maybe they released on a fairly regular schedule in the past, but they never promised anyone they'd stick with releases on the same timetable forever.

Here's a good expectation to have: Apple will release some products at some time in the future, nobody knows when. And if I buy when the product and price are right for me and ignore releases after that, I'll be perfectly happy.

I sure hope so, i am willing to pay up to $100 to get a comparable device. If not, this sure has tainted my devotion to their brand, i'll be second guessing before i even purchase another one of their products.

And instead, what brand will you buy that has a trade in program for tablets?

No, not immediately. But it will be obsolete sooner than most Apple products that typically have an annual update cycle.

Actually, the introduction of the iPad Mini with the A5 chip will prolong the life of the iPad 3 substantially, as developers will strive to support the lower specs of the Mini in order to get as many users as possible.

Whatever.
No one insulted you, I said the statement was dumb. To avoid a Phone I believe you actually want, but wont buy because of a connector.....to me seems dumb.
You have a right to post a statement, I have a right to disagree with it.
Its a forum, report me, do what you want.

I'm not just avoiding it for the connectors. I also don't have a limitless supply of money to upgrade everything when I don't really need to. If I was rich, sure. But I'm not.

People are complaining about them refreshing it? It's not as if its half the weight and screen is better. It's literally a minor spec bump with the additional lightning cable. Who cares? It you have an iPad 2/3 you should be happy. It's not the end of the world. I believe they made it so minor so people wouldn't feel as screwed over. Now if it was a complete redesign with better battery thinner/lighter etc. I'd be upset. But it's a minor spec bump at best: The world isn't gonna end because you only have a 3rd generation that'll still do ell the same tasks you used it for yesterday, today.

As someone who preordered the 3rd gen, I felt about 23 seconds of pain, then said, "really? What changed? With the mini and the 2 still around? Apps are still going to scream on my iPad."

Plus, if this 4th gen came out in March, everyone would be saying, "a year and that is all?"

It's tech, it changes.

Glad I waited! A6X with Double the CPU and Graphics performance! Faster wifi...It's going to be fast.

Good. I was hoping there would be a revision about now with their latest lithography process, and international LTE.

But I will wait for 128GB.

No, you're demanding that Apple compensate you for your iPad 3 buyers remorse.
They are already replacing them for people, no remorse here.
"would allow purchasers of the third-generation iPad to exchange their device for the fourth-generation iPad if purchased within the last 30 days"

Why? Because it is under warranty! AC+ is too and I expect similar treatment.

Now I'm thoroughly confused. I've been planning to wait until March to get my first iPad... does this mean that this is it and they'll release new ones in the Fall from now on.. or is the REAL next generation still coming in 5 months?

Imagine a sandwich that comes with meat, cheese, lettuce, and bread costs $5
You buy the sandwich and are happy until you find out that the next day that same sandwich now comes with twice the meat and twice the bread and a bag of chips and still costs $5.

Seriously, do you do any shopping at all or does Mom still handle all of that for you?

You don't have to imagine anything, that situation happens ALL THE TIME with every kind of product. You buy something and either something much better comes out or they have a major price drop. And yes, some stores have a guarantee for price drops, but even that has a time limit - if it's 30 days, there will be people who bought it 31 days earlier.

It's just mind boggling to me that people seem to think this sort of thing never happens and Apple invented the practice of "releasing better products at the same price".

I have a dead/faded pixel in the middle of my screen. It has been there for a long time, and I have ignored it for the most part. It really is a defect but I did not want to swap out iPads for no reason (especially since I still have iOS 5.1.1 JB). Once a JB comes out for the 4th Gen / iOS 6, that is when I plan to swap out.

At which point they'll likely make the swap but have plenty of ipad 3's still laying around and give you one of those. Which will likely be fine, and there you are without your free upgrade.

Swap out a prior gen model 3 times, and you get a newer gen model.

Which applies when Apple agrees there's a problem three times. Again, nobody is going to get free upgrades from pretending their ipad is broken.

Some people think they can pull a fast one with Apple. I think most of them will be disappointed when they get their iPad 3 refurb.

Agreed. I went around with Apple for over a week on my Time Capsule. I had a 2TB that was defective, and I wanted to replace it with a 3TB (which wasn't available when I bought mine). I was willing to pay the extra $200, but they wouldn't go for it.

If you had purchased your iPad 3 in the last 30 days it would be a different story. Now, you're pissed you don't have the latest & greatest, it's more than 30 days but that's okay, Apple has to take care of my superficial needs.

I bet all of those 3rd Gen iPad owners whining right now are the same ones who told me to just shut up when Apple decided to not bless the iPad 1st Gen with iOS 6...whiners are gonna whine...

and keep there pocket book closed.

Samsclub goes to 90 days. If its under warranty it will be replaced. Irregardless where or when you got it. AC+ extends that date. Only because iPad 3 is discontinued is why I (and others) will be getting free upgrades or $$$ back. And haha, I am not pissed. Glad I got my extended warranty, and I bet others are wishing they paid the extra $99 to get theirs extended too. The cool thing is the remainder of my AC+ will support my new iPad.

Wishful thinking paired with flawed logic.

But give it a try and good luck

My question is:

Does the iPad retina address all the "issues" the new iPad had? Heat, long charging time for battery?

I'm assuming so - also assuming that's one of the reasons for discontinuing the new iPad. They were going to move to the lightning connector, had this awesome A6 chip and decided just to get it all out of the way - fix issues, consolidate the lineup and release the 4th gen early.

I would imagine so. The changes aren't drastic, so I can't imagine Apple not doing a lot internally to address those issues.

Yes it fixes those legacy design defects, has higher power capability (faster charge rate), plus it's reversible, compact, and more rugged. Those issues did not affect the iPad 2.

See this... 2 more watts of power = 20% faster charging when using lightning USB cable.
Older charger was 10W. 12W accessory popped up today.

Lightning connector has configurable pins, so gets the extra current boost.

A great move for Apple, this and the mini will 100% give 1st Gen iPad owners a nudge to upgrade, myself included. The hardest part will be choosing which one to upgrade to as both have their positives. Combined with the holiday season, sales numbers will be higher than ever. Well done.

Still waiting for the 13" & 15" iPad or Air touch though.. That will be the next game changer, likely combined with OSX 11 and an Apple TV to streamline work and fun into one complete 'always on', 'lifestyle' ecosystem.

Come on future! I'm getting old! :)

Well, that was a terrible reason to buy it. I hope when Apple declines your attempts to get a free upgrade, you learn your lesson.

Apple stores are making exchanges for those still under their warranty period. AC+ should be just as easy to exchange.

That's 30 days. How long ago did you buy yours? Also, that has absolutely nothing to do with warranty (which is one year), it's just recent purchases, an extension to 30 over the usual 14 day exchange period. Right now EVERYONE who bought an ipad 3 is still under warranty.
