Does anyone know if the new iPhoto lets you zoom in to the photo (without having to enter "edit" mode first)? It's really annoying that on iPad/iPhone you can pinch to zoom when looking at pictures but for some reason I can't do that on my main computer? I know the screen is bigger but so is photo resolution...also when you have an odd-shaped picture like a portrait or panorama it would be nice to be able to zoom in easily. With all the talk about "Multi-touch" mice and trackpads it would be nice to see more programs support multi-touch features...especially a feature that is used so heavily in the photo programs in the iOS. Am I the only one who is annoyed by this?

Just tested and you still have to go into Edit mode in order to zoom in on the photo.

I think it's a big mistake that Apple didn't realise iLife '11 together with the Mac App Store beta - for the following reasons:

a) You could buy the different products individually, so if you only use iPhoto you can just get that

b) Since you can download products individually, it doesn't matter that they're not updating all the iLife apps at the same time (e.g. iWeb)

c) You could actually download the software (CD media? seriously?)

Thats obviously going to happen. Look at the screenshots. It would have made no sense to wait to release iLife till the App Store was ready.

No, but what would have made sense is to plan their releases for the same date in the first place. Would have been a great way to encourage adoption of the Store.

It would have been nice, I guess, but the OS X and iLife teams are different. Syncing releases is not always possible.

Maybe iWork '11 will come out at the same time.

I still think that this release of iLife '11 has made Apple look a little stupid. The upgrades aren't that good, and some apps aren't updated at all. That would have gone under the radar if they came out through the App Store.

Overall, although I am very positive about Apple in general, I can't help feeling the latest annoucements were underwhelming, not because of the direction things are going but purely because of how it was handled.

To me this is just proof of all the talk of how :apple: has put the Mac on the back burner and been concentrating on iOS based devices.

Really, the first update in about 2 years and the only improvements they have done is give you full screen mode in iphoto, a decent addition of features in garage band but they were only brought in from another program and given us a minimal fun to use feature in iMovie. How about giving some better tools for editing so I don't have to use other programs for better basic to medium editing control.

They put this together in minimal time. It is OBVIOUS they have not been working on this very long at all. Not even 64 bit! There is no revamp, just a few things added and not much at that. It probably took them longer to decide and approve the artwork on the box than it did for them to implement any of the new features.

As a new mac user I was REALLY looking forward to the new iLife release. Now after seeing it I am actually disgusted that so little went into this!!

What's more interesting; is it just me or did Steve Jobs look thinner than ever not to mention he was basically devoid of any energy during the keynote.

I'm surprised more people haven't been mentioning this. I could be wrong....

They are assuming you already have iLife installed (which every Mac does OOTB).

I realize that every Mac that can handle iLife'11 has some version of iLife. My question is that just about all of these articles say that iLife'11 is a $49 upgrade to iLife'09 users. What about folks that are still using earlier versions of iLife, like me (on iLife'08)?

I'm guessing that it's just poor research on the part of the tech writers. I don't think Apple expects users of older versions to purchase iLife'09 first, since they aren't carrying a "full" version of iLife'11.

In the end, I think the $49 version of iLife'11 is the full version. That's how it reads on the Apple website.

Poor research or they just assume everyone has iLife'09..

Is there anywhere to download it? Or do I HAVE to go into the store to get it?

I'd buy right now if I could download. I travel enough, though, that waiting for it to ship means I might not buy it for months.

This is dumb.

Apple is lagging way behind Adobe

Lets see if i got this right, not 64 bit, no native editing AVCHD in imovie. Bye apple. Glad i sold my mac pro.

When will Apple realize they are lagging way behind on what consumers want?

iLife - Not 64bit
iMovie - No native AVCHD editing. This would save so much time than having to convert the video to edit.
iDVD - Why is there no support for BluRay burning/AVCHD Bluray discs? - I have been waiting forever.
iWeb - No update with HTML5 support? Most browsers already accept HTML5.

Although I use pro applications for my business such as Final Cut Pro Studio, these too do not support what consumer or professionals want. I am considering getting the Adobe Master Suite for my professional needs because Apple can't seem to get their act together for software.

Apple software are always full version. Even though they sometimes advertise them with "upgrade" pricing, the software is a full version. As long as your Mac meet the system requirements (intel and running SL), you should be able to install iLife 11 regardless whether you have any previous iLife on the Mac or not.

Even those $29 "upgrade" Snow Leopard discs are full version, you can fresh install them on a blank intel Mac.

miffed

I was kind of hoping for some hot new iWeb features scraped off Keynote or something even better. Maybe they just couldn't get them out the door in time. Maybe iWeb is moving over to iWork... yeah... probably not.

Does Apple have an up-to-date type of program for SW purchases? I just bought the box set 2 weeks ago, and unwrapped it earlier this week.
We don't know. Ask Apple.
http://www.apple.com/ilife/uptodate/I think you are eligible for a $7 upgrade

I went into an Apple Store, they said "We don't know, call." I called Apple, they said, "I don't know, let me check with a manager."

The manager said "No."

Argh.

i had a 24 inch imac in for repair it had to be replaced they gave me a new 27 i3 mac it has a ilife 2011 disc inside the mac i had to install myself it did not come preinstalled the last version i had was ilife 2008

I think they're providing more than what the typical consumer wants or knows what to do with. It's going to probably take me weeks before I even have the time and energy to even start investigating iLife. :)

My refurb 27" came with iLife 09 installed, but a CD of iLife 11 in the box. They do seem to always take an extra step.

well i bought the new iLife 11, and i like it so far. i like the interface in iPhoto, but there seems to be a lot of faces that it misses. i do like the new facebook features.
