Do you realize the target audience for iLife apps? If you can actually use Final Cut, then go get one. Normal people finds iMovie 09 to be extremely good already, and the additions of things like movie trailer themes are just icing on the cake. I can churn out a decent looking video with iMovie 09 faster than in FCE.

I concur. I used Final Cut for years (since 2004 or so) and moved to iMovie for everything with iMovie '09. It's a different paradigm, but the same amount of control is available underneath when you need it (frame-level cuts of audio and video, etc). When you don't need that precision, it's 10x faster throwing a video together in iMovie than it ever was in Final Cut, and I'm working on 1.5 years of experience in iMovie versus half a decade growing up with Final Cut.

Now, what you do miss are the great add-ons. You can't get Motion outside of Final Cut Studio, and LiveType, etc. iMovie has a few canned effects, but they pale in comparison to what FCS offers. Throw in Color and the audio app (Soundtrack I believe?) and there's a level of professional polish you won't be able to achieve in iMovie. And, of course, the FCP Compressor runs rings around iMovie's export options for quality, which is just plain silly.

Oh, did you try it out? How do you know? If you don't mind me asking.

Sorry, there is support, but aparently not native...I was wrong.
I do hope there may or will be better support with iMovie '11.
wikipedia said:
Apple's Final Cut Express 4, Final Cut Pro 6.0.1, and iMovie '08-'09 (iMovie is bundled with all new Apple computers; Final Cut Express and Pro are sold separately) do not support editing of AVCHD clips directly. Imported AVCHD clips are automatically converted into the Apple Intermediate Codec format, which requires more hard disk space (40GB per hour as opposed to 13.5GB per hour for Standard Definition DV), a more powerful machine (an Intel-based Mac), and a more recent OS (Mac OS X 10.5). Final Cut Pro 6.0.5 "logs and transfers" the footage from AVCHD to AppleProRes by default and also gives the option of converting to the Apple Intermediate Codec. It does not allow native transferring of the *.m2ts clips nor directly editing them. The latest release of Apple's iLife suite (specifically, iMovie) has added support for AVCHD Lite cameras and camcorders

Wow, looks like the first time ever I won't be upgrading to the new version of iLife. No real new killer features, just a thin layer of new gimmicks.

Very disappointed that :apple: still hasn't addressed the cataloguing and viewing of "home movies" within their own ecosystem. Once again we have a keynote demonstrating the creation of terrific iMovies of BMX guys and best friends having a jolly good time galavanting in Europe...with the recommendation of uploading to YouTube or facebook. What about just watching it with my family at home? On my big screen via my :apple:TV, or iPad perhaps?

I agree on both counts. This is a rather weak update, from what I've seen so far. And, they have repeatedly and doggedly missed the point with home movies. I really hate my movies sitting next to all the other movies in our library, and I also really would love to be able to publish something a little "richer" than just the movie, including "extras" etc.

Personally, iPhoto sounds like it might be a good upgrade for my wife (I use Aperture); iMovie sounds like a decent update, and the fill-in-the-blank short-feature "trailer" feature would be something I'd use quite a bit (although like all fill-in-the-blank features if it isn't highly customizable the output will tend to all look the same in the end ... the problem iDVD has as well). GarageBand - well, I just never use it, so I can't get excited about anything there.

My other big wish-list item is for Apple to promote third party template efforts for iMovie. How many times can I use the "Comic Book" theme without ending up with a stack of videos that all look really really similar?

Judging by the Mac app store photo on Apple's website, it looks as if we'll be able to buy each iLife app individually, for those only interested in one or two:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/

You can see each one listed separately.

Looks like $14.99 each, although it's a bit low-res.

IMHO, though, they just put them up separately for the screenshot because they could only put Apple software up there and needed more than just one "iLife '11" placeholder.

I wouldn't read too much into it :)

ZOMG, I'm so infuriated right now.

Really, no iWeb update????????????? I so wanna scream WHAT THE F......!!!!!!!!!!!!

iWeb update was the only thing that I was so waiting for. I was so hopeful that I would not have even cared for iPad 2 or iPhone 5 if they had been announced too. DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm soooooooo angry and crying from all the anger right now. That's it, I even lost appetite, gone to bed.................

Using the Share to iTunes feature of iMovie is really weak. Just throws your home movie in there next to "Iron Man 2" and "Finding Nemo." iMovie ought to have a built in feature that creates an HTML5 iTunes-LP-DVD type presentation package that can be played on iDevices or :apple:TV, uploaded to a website/MobileMe, or even converted and burned to a DVD. And iTunes ought to have a separate section for "Home Movies" where all these creations live. Seems like a killer feature and marketing tool for the :apple:TV...suck them in with Junior's first steps and Susie's wedding, next thing you know they're renting episodes of "Glee."

It appears that iDVD is going to remain stagnant for yet another iteration of iLife, indicating that :apple: is philosophically through with physical media. Give us a new way to preserve, organize, and watch our own footage besides uploading to YouTube!

+1

Guys, come on...the iMovie updates alone worth some good bucks. I paid close to $49 for GeeThree's Slick Effects sports theme plugin a few years back.

Now iMovie has that, one click instant replay, audio editing and movie trailers.

If you use and enjoy iMovie '09 this is a nice update.

Same goes for iPhoto. The books and slideshow features are very nice.

I'll seconded that. iMovie, iPhoto & Garageband are the only iLife apps I use. I can't wait to use instant replay for those little league football games!

I bought an iMac less than a month ago. Does anyone know if Apple will be doing something that allows me to get iLife '11 for free? I know they did something like this with Snow Leopard.

thanks!

I bought most of the set from gee three. Awesome to use in iMovie 6. Been using iMovie 6 for the last 3 years with these plugins and put together some good movies. Enjoy the timeline. Tried iMovie 8,9 and can't stand it. But, since apple fizzled on the updates, will give the other side a shot, maybe adobe.

After reading the first 2 pages of this thread, I think most are missing the point. The point is that this is a CONSUMER set of apps. Most consumers are going to be thrilled that they can make all those different types of videos or picture "things" with little to no know how...

I've used Final Cut as well as Photoshop, but for quick jobs, this is great!

I am concerned however that they didn't discuss any editing options in iPhoto...

Just my .02¢

I am really disappointed about the lack of an iWeb update. Hey, why not just totally get rid of iWeb altogether to push even more people to frakkin' Facebook

I hope another software company will jump in to fill the void and offer a program, which would allow people like me with little time to set up a nice looking web sit without having to learn HTML coding, but with more features than this OLD and STALE iWeb :(

Pretty disappointed with the iLife '11 updates.

iPhoto doesn't really add anything, we can already make books (although they are prohibitively expensive compared to others available of equal quality like Blurb), the cards will only have limited appeal and unless you use facebooks that won't have any impact either, essentially all you get is full screen.

iMovie trailers are great for those who want to make them and the freeze frame looks good too, but both can be created with a bit of work already. Fair enough, the target audience for iMovie don't want to mess around when drag and drop can create these effects, but they just make things easier, they aren't impossible in the current itteration.

If iDvd has some new templates then what else does it need. After a few uses with the limited templates already on there your movies begin to look a bit similar to one and other, much like the themes in iMovie.

I've never used garage band so it was never going to be a selling point for me any way. Likewise iWeb, although I agree with those saying Apple missed a trick by not making a point about HTML5 and building this in somewhere.

Really disappointed because iLife is what brought me over to the Mac, I guess if I didn't have one already it would still tempt me, but the improvements from iLife '09 aren't enough to get £45 out of my money.

I'm almost in a similar boat with the new iLife. On the other hand, I think they did a pretty good job with what they did update. iMovie got something nice for the casual market they were going for. Movie trailers can be made with a bit of extra work, but the drag and drop is pretty much what the non-technical folks want. This feature is either for family members wanting exciting new ways to show off their vacation videos, or for those who just want to take a few minutes here and make a cool movie trailer. Burn it off on iDVD, and share to family.

For me, other than perhaps some new templates, I'm not sure what new features iDVD would demand. It's generally a good casual method of making DVDs with menus. On the other hand, with both Microsoft and Apple pushing the digital distribution of movies industry (And to an odd extent, Sony jumping on board because it is becoming popular enough for them to want a piece.), I can sort of see why there is less push to innovate DVD features.

But I hear everybody when it comes to iWeb. If anything, that is the part that's highest in demand. Even more so, there is SO much they can do with iWeb, and I hope Apple has already gotten suggestions. Number 1. And the primary update iWeb needs. A major suite of CSS3 tools. An awesome almost drag and drop (and info panel to change options) ability to place dynamic and impressive CSS3 and HTML5 transformations and other major webkit tricks to provide impressive flash-like content using the HTML5 standards. If Apple wants to fully support this emerging technology, as they say, they need to make it easy for a more casual audience to create these great features as Apple has demonstrated. I think that would be a huge benefit if the average joe can whip up similar results which will all work on iPads, iPhones, etc. There are great demonstrations out there, but no convenient way to integrate them in your own web pages. You still have to do way more research to get them to work yourself, and a good dose of experimentation for which the less patient, less technical would give up on. iWeb is one of those suites meant to bring nicer web development to the average joe. If they can do that for CSS3/HTML5, it'll spark and industry-changing thing. Though I think that standard needs one thing to be finalized (in my book), the ability to trigger and manage audio/sound events.

As an example, I want to be able to create one of those cool rotating menus, and various graphical effects (Like they demonstrated in that Toy Story 3 page) in a few clicks of the mouse, and settings. Be able to drag position it in the screen, in front of a nice background, etc. This is template kind of stuff which I'm sure the folks at Apple could whip up in no time. Probably easier than what they do for iMovie.

you sure they'll make an exception? just wondering cause I too also ordered on Sept 29th, didn't end up getting it till like the 5th though.
I ordered an iMac on 29th September and received it on the 5th October. I used the online form last night in the UK, put the 5th October as purchase date and put in the serial number of the iMac. My 6.99 upgrade was accepted and I received a shipment notifaction e-mail at 07:09 this morning, so you should be fine :)

I purchased a family pack just after the event - upgrading from iLife '08 (no, I hadn't got the '09 version) on all my Macs for just 79 euros looks perfect to me.

If the new iPhoto works as they say, I might start using it again for simple tasks instead of Lightroom. And the trailer thing in iMovie looks really cool. Look forward to iWeb improvements too.
