International 3G plans

So no word on the 3G plans yet? Would somebody please explain to me (an admittedly ignorant foreigner when it comes to wireless in europe) the cheapest way to get 3G coverage for an iPad3G if you are traveling through multiple european countries?

yup.. buy multiple sim cards

The problem with that is: We don't have a national sales tax, we have nothing like the VAT.

Sales tax in the US is made by adding local sales tax to state sales tax. And each state and local have different rules about what is even taxable.

Yeah but it's how things are working in the US, prices are always without VAT b/c most states have a different VAT and you'd have to print like dozens of different prices on each product.

Fair points. Would probably require Washington to convince the states to give up their individual taxing rights and set a single national rate. Can't see that happening anytime soon though!

Interesting, but let's see how much the unlimited data contract is going to be, because otherwise I think the iPad is useless.

Frankly I don't see an unlimited data plan going for less than $60/month in Canada; and I'm not sure that the iPad is 'good' enough at that price point.

Tom

Then move out of Canada. :p

I think you're flattering yourself there. I'm pretty sure Apple had their dates picked out before the hung parliamentary vote happened. I'm sorry, things from Apple ALWAYS cost more in Europe. This isn't because the pound is lower than normal. Our prices do not include taxes, yours do.

I don't think Apple really cares about who your prime minister is or who is running your parliament. Don't assume "ignorant Americans" don't understand "the world," since clearly the UK parliament is the most important thing ever. I know what is happening and I still barely care. Side note: I think Nigel Farage is insane, but the fact you guys let him have a seat in the EU parliament is hilarious.

Erm, I think Apple would be interested in anything that's going to effect the price of trading - why do you think the Financial Times covers such a broad array to topics. So I don't think Apple really care who it is - they will care how it effects the price of the pound though - which is invariably has; and they would be foolish not to.

Bad Apple Bad Apple

With a huge market share for Apple in both laptops and iPhone, I am downright dissapointed and mad about not seeing any Scandinavian countries there (Denmark, Sweden, Norway).

Com'on little tiny Luxembourg in the second wave...in july... When will we get it.... 2011?

BAD BAD APPLE...!

Compare the cost of virtually any hardware on the Apple store, US price vs UK price, and you are looking at US price + duty + vat + a few percent on top = UK price.

And for that "a few percent on top" part... There may be a customs duty for importing an iPad into the EU. It is even possible that Apple receives less money for an iPad sold in the UK than for one sold in the US.

Apple seems to give the same Taric (customs classification) code for iPads and laptops. If this is accepted as the official classification there is no customs duty for importing it into the EU. However...

All this is a bit fuzzy at the moment. I know when private individuals have imported iPads the Taric categories have been the same as for iPods, not the same as for laptops. This means a 4..14 % customs duty. I am not aware of any EU level official decisions on the matter. It is even possible that the Taric code (and tariff) for the 3G version is not the same as that of the WiFi version.

(Edit: It seems that in the UK the duty rate is zero at the moment. Hopefully the EU wide decision will be the same. The last word I heard from the local customs office was that the thing hasn't been settled.)

When comparing Apple product prices internationally the customs duties have to be taken into account. Taking them into account is not too easy, as the customs value of the device is not the same as the end-user price, unless an end user imports it herself.

Almost £100 than it costs in the states? I think I'll pass thanks - unless they offer an educational discount.

Shame, as I intended to buy one.

Edit: ok, £40 more - but that's still no excuse especially as the pound will rise again soon.

So, sorry, but you think less than 10% extra is too much for a product when it's well known that there's at least a 5% rise just as the cost of doing business in the UK? Riiiiiiiiiiight.

Come on folks, It was always likely to be around £400 to £450, when you actually do the maths £429 is almost exactly what you'd expect it to be. It's not a rip off price, it's in line with the US price, nothing to complain about to be honest.

It's a fraction more than I'd hoped for but about what I expected. Just about, JUST about within the range of a birthday present too so hopefully the release date will be before the 30th of May :D

I wonder if the distribution has something to do with inking deals in regards to iBook and 3g plans. Certainly stock has something to do with it to, but those two things are a pretty big factor in the ipad and i think apple is reluctant to launch the ipad without those two in place for the specified country.

Power.... Extremmmmme!

Aussie pricing is pretty good.

If the Australian dollar wasn't as strong as it is right now it would cost a couple of hundred dollars more... over 1300 for the 3G+64GB if Aussie dollar was at 60-70 US cents.... :D

WOW - No price fixing there.

We Canadians should revolt over our Cell/Data fee's ... near the highest in the world ... but - we keep paying it ... our own fault then I suppose.

They should pass a rule in the US to force all products to be quoted and priced tax inclusive.

Why because people forgot how to multiply? Or at least hit the % key on a calculator?

Tell me why should companies have to include the goverment's tax when quoting the sales price? To do so makes it appear exactly at is does here, that Apple is intentionally overcharging. But the overcharge is mostly due to taxes, not corporate greed.

The truth is, some countries like to bury taxes in prices for that reason -- so people don't realize how much taxes they are really paying and then can blame high prices on companies, not the government. Well, you know those "free" government services like health care have to be paid even if they are "free." The VAT is how its done. Do don't blame Apple for the government services you are addicted to.

In the U.S. there is no "national sales tax" or VAT -- at least not yet, hopefully never. Sales taxes are levied by the state and sometimes local option, and vary from 0% to 11.5% so it would be impossible to advertise U.S. prices inclusive of tax.

Do the math you dork...

Unbelievable - you losers. It's £25 difference for the 16gb, not £100

TAKE OFF THE VAT, AND REALISE THAT US PRICES DO NOT INCLUDE SALES TAX

Sheesh.

*sigh* you're stupidly comparing apples with oranges you douchenozzle. We cannot take off the VAT, because most folks in the UK are NOT businesses, so MUST pay the full price INCLUDING VAT. So any price considerations must include the price inclusive of VAT.

So, to compare apples to Apples: if you DO take into account USA sales tax, the British *still* get f*cked hard by crApple. To wit:

Current US prices for WIFI iPads:
16 GB WIFI
$499.00

32 GB WIFI
$599.00

64 GB WIFI
$699.00

Let's say we add 10.5% sales tax to the above (a la San Francisco?):

16 GB WIFI
$551.40

32 GB WIFI
$661.90

64 GB WIFI
$772.40

And per the BBC, today we get 1.4677 US dollars per British pound, so if I convert the above Ipad + tax prices to Pounds Stelring:

16 GB WIFI
£375.69

32 GB WIFI
£450.98

64 GB WIFI
£526.27

OK, so far so good for a UK person as the prices ain't too bad (if they're visiting the USA!)

BUT for those of us who are living in the UK, the "real" UK prices (as announced by Apple today) are actually as follows:

16 GB WIFI
£429 (£53.31 more expensive than the "converted" prices above.)

32 GB WIFI
£499 (£48.02 more expensive than the "converted" prices above.)

64 GB WIFI
£599 (£72.73 more expensive than the "converted" prices above.)

As you can see, even taking the US sales tax into account, in the UK we pay at least about £50 on top just for the WI-Fi iPads... (I'm too tired to do the math for the 3G versions!)

I'll be honest, i am NOT surprised, US companies (and possibly other countries' companies?) always give us the not-so-gentle screw when it comes to electronics and software.

I think it's bollocks, but what to do?

Well prices are out. I have been waiting long for that information...
Funny thing is that i wrote following E-Mail to steve Jobs just yesterday:

"Dear Mr. Jobs,
As an "soon to be user of an iPad" recent reports about the amazing and overwhelming success of the iPad WiFi and now the 3G+WiFi Version in the USA made me worry about your "late may" timeframe for German launch of the iPad.
Is there going to be further delay in the international launch timeframe ?
Thanks very much,
My Name
Germany
PS: I can´t wait for the 10th of may to finally pre-order one! "

Well i know it is kind of dumb to think my email made Apple announce this today right?!

Well i would think the same if not for the same coincidence right before they announced the push-back of international launch from "late April" to "late may". The announced the push-back on April 14th.

It happens to be that i wrote an email ( the following one) to steve jobs the day before that happened, too.

"Hi Steve,
I can't wait to get my hands on an ipad. Looking forward to German
launchday.
When will it be? Will it be soon? "

Crazy world.

I was expecting around £400 for the Wifi 16GB so £29 more is fine for me, but I'm curious, how can I buy the 3G version if I don't know how much the data plans will be?
This seems incredibly unfair...

(...) I think I'll pass thanks - unless they offer an educational discount.

(...)

Don't count on it.

(...)

Opportunity missed; await iPhone 1G-like price-drop....

Jobs said that they are planning on dropping the price but for now its selling very good, don't expect it any time soon.

The iPhone 1G sales were lower than they expected, they didn't have a choice but drop the price.

Why do i think that the iPad 2nd Generation will be half the price from the 1st generation just like the iPhone

but then again an iPhone is a phone while the iPad is a.....

Its normal that a new product has a premium compare to next generation, that's marketing; every company do so.

But it probably won't be half the price.

£70 difference between 16G and 32G and £100 between 32G and 64? I think I'll go for the 32.

I was thinking that too.
I was planning to buy a 16WiFi but maybe I'll go for a 32WiFi.

BAD BAD APPLE...!

Agree with you 110%, almost whole europe is getting, we got skipped for what?

iPhone, iPod & Mac sales are going great here, but why no iPads for us?

Because of that i am a bit scared for the iPhone 4G releases for Scandinavian:(

So, sorry, but you think less than 10% extra is too much for a product when it's well known that there's at least a 5% rise just as the cost of doing business in the UK? Riiiiiiiiiiight.

Well it is for me, as I also planed to buy a 17" macbook after buying the iPad. So now I think I'll just skip the iPad.

I don't want to be offensive here, but what's the point of setting a distinct "launch date" for a country as small as Luxembourg? I mean this country is so small you can just walk over to Germany or France from anywhere within Luxembourg and buy your iPad there. Do they really think Luxembourg's customers will wait until June to buy an iPad when they can buy it already just around the corner?

Don't get too worked up about Luxembourg, Apple probably has the same regional headquarters for them as they have for Belgium & Netherlands (=BeNeLux). It makes more sense to incorporate them in the same launch for Belgium & Netherlands then to do a seperate regional launch later on.

No prices in Euros yet either.

But 429 GBP is very close to €499. I'm hoping it's more like €459.

Apple likes to keep the post tax Euro price the same. Therefore the pre-tax Euro price varies country to country.

Eurozone VAT rates range from 15%-22%.

Therefore take $499 = €392.66 (at today's rate) and add highest rate 22% VAT = €479 approx

This would be a good guess for the euro price point, assuming no duty. But probably, €499 for additional costs.

At least they could remove the huge teaser from the swedish company site since it never seems to get here, not even in the second round.
No kidding. Apple.se has been nothing but a giant iPad billboard for months. When you click to see the "unbelievable price" they're talking about, there's nothing there except vague excuses, so you go to the Store and click on the iPad link which takes you back to the same useless product page you just came from.

Since the Nordic countries are not included in the May 28 round, and supposedly not in the July one either, it's starting to look like a September-October release by which time the current iPad model will be dated technology with approx. 6 months left before it's replaced by newer models. So Apple.se can either remain a stupid iPad banner for 4-5 more months of zero availability, or they can retire the banner before the product is even out. Epic J. Failington Jr...

Anyone can orchestrate a simultaneous worldwide release these days except Apple. It's like the 1970's when Hollywood movies showed up in overseas theaters 6 months later.
