Apple Announces iOS 8 with Touch ID for Apps, QuickType, Third-Party Keyboards and More

I always wondered why they removed the ability to tweet or post to facebook from the notification center. So now you can "like" FB notifications, but still can't post a status? Weird.

You have a point, but it's likely they put it back with Widgets now.

Here's more info on 'Family Sharing'

Love this feature.
I have to constantly "gift" apps, music, etc to my son, so he can download them on his devices.
I have to "invite" my husband to calendar events to do with school and other appointments.
I have to "send"/"share" photos....
I also share the same Apple ID with my husband so we can have the same apps, now we can do this independently.

Crazy buggy. Half the apps on my phone crash on launch, at least with an upgrade from iOS 7. Facebook is one notable culprit (instant crash).

Definitely not ready for prime time yet.

dunno what you're talking about, all my apps are completely fine

I thought it was interesting to see Tim Cook wearing a pair of Nike Roshe Runs. :D. Didn't think that was his style.

Family sharing coming a couple of years too late for me. I need Former Family Unsharing. I'll explain.

Married 20+years. My apple id controls everything. Wife now ex, has divorced me. If I take her off of my iPhone account (which I kind of have to do, since the password is the password to my email, for one thing), she loses all of her apps and all of her purchased music that is protected. She may even be losing all the data from her apps. I can't think of any way to help her out with this.

Ideas? You can just send your idea to Apple for "requested features."

LOL, helping an EX-WIFE keep her music and apps. Nuff said.

Instead of widgets, how about you just tap & hold an app's icon so it expands a bit
then shows what you'd see in a "widget display"?

because why would you tap and hold the app icon to see a small portion of information from the app, when you could just tap the icon and open the app faster?

then you could also only ever see it on the home screen whereas having it in notification center lets you access your widgets everywhere.

Strange, iTunes tells me I can't upgrade my iPhone to iOS8.

I'm a registered dev, and I know I have an iPhone 5 A1428, downloaded the right build, cleared just over 5 GB on my iPhone and it won't let me.

While I understand that iOS 8 is more about opening the garden of the OS and pushing its capabilities to another level, I am underwhelmed by the fact that nothing has been said regarding Maps. I hope I'll discover features they haven't talked about.

That's because it's not OTA - have to download from the Dev page at Apple's site

You sort of skipped over HandOff there. Synching docs in google docs is not at all the same thing.
Huh? I don't see why not, just because the service isn't visible to you, doesn't mean that Apple isn't using a Sync method of some sort. They have to, otherwise you wouldn't be able to do any offline work.

oh yeah! well can your samsung send an iMessage? No? didnt think so HA!

just kidding lol :D

Don't get me started on the mess that iMessage causes if you switch away from an iPhone.

Oh, but Android does have the equivalent that runs through Google, only it works with all Android devices.

iOS 8 looks predictable and boring.

It worries and concerns me to see Apple's lack of inovation.

They didn't even make Safar snappier!

Steve Jobs would never have allowed any of this.

You've completely missed the exacting nature of Continuity haven't you?

Not really, I pick up any device and it has whatever I was working on exactly where I left off.

Works from Android to Mac to Kindle to PC for me.

Additionally, I can see my text messages, phone calls, etc. from my computer or other device. Again, works with Android for me.

Not sure what Android is missing that Apple is going to have.

Okay you obviously don't know what handoff does, so let's review--

Handoff brings proximity awareness to your Apple devices. As an example, let's say you're writing an email on your iPhone and you venture to your Mac. Your computer will notice what you're doing and prompt you, giving you the option to finish writing the email on the Mac.

Mail would automatically open up on the Mac with the email presented to your face so you could continue working on it.

Can you do this seamlessly with Android, without going through a bunch of extra steps?

I'm pretty sure for the most part apples native implementation of features run better than androids native features. I'll bet apples health is better than samsungs s health

And third party implementations tend to run even better.....oh wait, iPhone doesn't get that option for a lot of items.

This whole health thing is either going to be a fad or will change so much from what it is now that you won't care, either way there's no point in worrying about which is better now.

How extremely annoying is that? I use my computer for different things than I use my phone. I often start something on my phone that I don't want to work on at my computer, I wouldn't want my computer asking me if I want to continue every time.

That being said, yes I can seamlessly continue working on an email on my computer, it's called the drafts folder. Ok, so there may be one extra step of clicking the Mail icon on the computer.

With the application already opened up to where you were and everything?

Again, why would I want that? It doesn't make any sense.

yes i could see how a tiny little icon would be so bothersome and inconvenient and that your cumbersome way is preferable.

That being said, yes I can seamlessly continue working on an email on my computer, it's called the drafts folder. Ok, so there may be one extra step of clicking the Mail icon on the computer.
That's 3 steps. Mail icon > Drafts folder > Actual message

Again, why would I want that? It doesn't make any sense.

Because choice? Convenience?

Oooooh, theres some nice stuff in ios8. 3rd party keyboards?! The owners of swype will be wetting themselves! Although i have tried it (i had a dark period when i had a Galaxy S3), and i switched off the swiping part of it.

Family sharing looks a good idea, plus the new notifications.

Really? Underwhelmed? IMHO, this was one of the best Apple Keynotes in a long while. EXTENSIONS alone is a HUGE thing for iOS. Handoff for Yosemite is AMAZING.

I'm still blown away by this Keynote. Absolutely phenomenal!

Yes. This is one of the best keynotes from Apple in a very long time. And this is coming from someone who has been disappointed (at least in some respect) with almost every keynote since the iPhone. It shows two things:

(1) They're doing an EXCELLENT job of providing features that we want. Text messages in the messages app on OS X, 3rd party keyboards, 3rd party Touch ID, etc ... some of which I never thought Apple would ever support.

(2) Even while listening to the consumer, they can still do their own thing and introduce complete surprises for everyone -- Swift. What a surprise.

Incredible.

Way to go Apple.

I love my Apple products.
I don't have an iPhone.
I can do these features on my Android phone.
Hey Galaxy or Hey Google.
Messaging interaction without leaving the app I'm in, etc.

Anyway...... Boring.....

So head back to the Android forums.

Then when it's available turn it off.
Simple.
