Video Mirroring looks like a fantastic feature; in fact my first thoughts were, this turns the iPad into a great games console....! But, what i don't understand is why on their webpage they don't use games as an example with Video Mirroring? Am i missing something? I would have thought they would be all over this feature with gaming...?

Can't wait for the GeekBench test.

If the iPad3 does come out in September/October with higher res. and better processor and other little extras, it will be amazing. The iPad2 is already an excellent video-photo machine, browser, entertainment platform, and document maker. $499 is a steal.

'cos it's not that useful for gaming probably. ;)

Why do you need to see the game on the pad and on the telly? If you're looking at one you're not looking at the other.

This is for presentations, teaching aids, etc where someone else needs to see the display whilst you can still control the interface visually.

Negative
- No LP/TB Support (no port or controller) makes this a relic before its even sold
- RAM ???
- No ‘world’ model; its either CDMA or GSM.
- Screen Resolution is the same
- No super-special daylight viewable screen
- Design has not soul
- GPS not on the Wi-Fi model
- No vibration motor for alerts or games

You usually make good points, but these points aren't...

- LP/TV support: come on. There are virtually no devices yet on the market that support this tech. Your ipad might have LP/TB but you wouldn't have a device to connect it to..
- Why is a 'world' model significant for a consumer? Just buy the one that suits you. Or do you have a need to switch between CDMA and GSM all the time?
- Screen resolution: a doubling would be cool, but come on. Be realistic..
- Daylight viewable screen. It doesn't exist. I use my iPad every day. It only bothers me on the beach. Pixel Qi et al are not viable alternatives. The displays are vastly inferior to the current IPS display.
- Design has no soul.. Neither do gingers  and I'm a ginger. What kind of nonsense are you talking? I think the design of this ipad is much better than the Xoom and all the other competitors.
- In what kind of situation would GPS be useful in a wifi model? To determine your position at home, or in a hotel? GPS is for traveling and as yet there aren't too many transportation methods that enable you to take a wifi hotspot with you.
- vibration: would be cool, but no more than that...

Really?

But the iPad already does this (so i'm going to assume GarageBand does too) - at least for individual apps. Might not be *exactly* what you want (a communal file storage area) but it's still storing the files on the device for download to a computer with iTunes. Hopefully they'll improve that though (allow global access of files over WIFI or something).

Does it really? I'm a web designer and I would love to be able to use an ipad to show my clients that their sites DON'T NEED flash, that pretty much everything can be done with jquery and to let them know that their site will be able to display on the ipad (and avoid carrying my laptop when I go to presentations/meetings). Is there a web design app that lets you edit code and save it locally? also if you're working on your computer can you upload files to the ipad to edit/show on the browser?

Thanks

Now the competition has to decide to keep copying the ipad1 or start copying the ipad 2. They can't do both. Apple locked up too many touch screens.

what he said

assisted does not mean crippled, it is the opposite. It's improved because in triangulates your general area with cell towers very quickly, and then the GPS can hone in on exact location. I stopped using my tom tom because when I got in the car it would take a few minutes before it would find me... I have to sit in the car waiting to drive until it finds my location...very frustrating

What they are saying thirded :) Satellite positioning initially has multiple possible solutions for location on earth. For example, the intersecting circles for two satellites gives two positions the receiver can be, on earth. Additional satellites break these ties, but a lot of serious math is actually happening for resolution of timing from the satellites to geo-locate the receiver. Assisted GPS enhances this process by allowing the receiver to discard non-logical satellite resolutions, and more quickly fine-tune the solution that matches the cell tower assisted position. Assisted is simply better and an enhancement to the processing of traditional GPS. That is why it IS faster than a Garmin at initial start-up for location. Once a non-assisted GPS resolves your location, then it will update as quickly as an assisted. But to say the iPhone or iPad doesn't have a "real" GPS is simply uninformed. However, if you have a data base that must be streamed to the device, and isn't stored onboard (as it is with Garmins and Tom Toms, then yes, your iPhone GPS won't work, because it must be in contact with a cell to receive the underlying map data to associate with the coordinates. The Navagon App loads all data onto your phone, so it doesn't need cellular service. I have that App as well, and it is as good as any Garmin I have used.

seems as though you were watching a different presentation. Here, let me help you out.

So you admit that it's lighter than it was before.

Please share with us the thinner (there aren't any) and lighter (there aren't any) and cheaper (there aren't any) options. Please highlight the ones that get 10 hours of battery life also. I'd also like notations next to the ones that have rear hd cameras. Please don't include tablets that you can't actually purchase (no vaporware!). Xoom is thicker than the ipad (.5 to .34 inches) and weighs more (1.6 to 1.3 lbs).

I think what you mean to say is we can have access to it, or have a usable battery. You'll notice that the xoom didn't even ship with flash (although it's entire campaign was based on that). They can't get it optimized to have decent battery life. See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26574892@n07/5475257624/

um, yeah. He has a point. Take rim for example, which has upgraded the playbook three times and hasn't shipped a single version.

Yep. They've had so much success!

The good news is that nobody is buying the android tablets, so there should be plenty of those for you. Their battery life is terrible (3 hours on one!), and they have minimal apps available for them. The funny thing about all of the competing tablets is that they are at the top of their games. It just doesn't get any better from here for them. They have no clue where a tablet fits in the market.

winning!

...all the competition offering thinner, lighter, cheaper...

Links please? I'd love to see all these units that are thinner, lighter, and cheaper. And are actually shipping, not just vaporware showed off at a trade show.

Pretty sure they mentioned RAM with the release of the iPhone 4, chances are they didn't upgrade it. I'm sure iFixit will be on the case soon.

Pretty sure they didn't. And it's unimaginable that they would leave it at 256, the only question is 512 or a gig (I'd hope the latter but probably the former).

Amazing how all these new apps are going to run on 256mb of ram...

Amazing that you're assuming that's how much it will have, when that info hasn't been released yet.

As expected, Apple announced the next generation of its popular tablet device at a media event today. The iPad 2 will have the same 9.7-inch display but will be 33% thinner than the previous model. It will have front-facing and rear-facing cameras and Apple's new 1GHz dual-core A5 processor. With the addition of cameras, the next-generation iPad will be capable of making FaceTime calls with other FaceTime-capable devices. The rear-facing camera can capture 720p HD video. Despite its thinner casing, the iPad 2 will have the same battery life as the first generation of 10 hours and 30 days of stand-by time.

The 3G models of the iPad 2 will be compatible with the GSM networks of AT&T and other carriers as well as Verizon's CDMA network. The versions compatible with Verizon's network will be sold in the U.S. only.

Apple has designed new accessories for the next-generation iPad, including cases called Smart Covers and an HDMI adapter. The Smart Covers will attach magnetically to the iPad 2 and will automatically wake the device when opened and put it to sleep when closed.

The iPad 2 will run iOS 4.3 which will be released for other iOS devices on March 11.

The iPad 2 will be available starting March 11 in the U.S. and will come in two colors – white and black. Pricing and capacities have not changed from the first generation of the iPad with the Wi-Fi models coming in at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, and $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi + 3G models will cost $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB, and $829 for 64GB.

I'm hoping for a subsidized Verizon type deal. If not, than at worst, deals on iPad 1 will finally make the device affordable.

A port would have been nice, but what I think is critical is a TB controller to take advantage of the speed that the I/O offers. This, as far as can be told at the point, does not have it. Without this, the iPad 1.5 is old before its time.

Oh great, so we can use it on the only three MacBook Pros (let alone computers period) that have the damn port. Good thinking! By the time Thunderbolt reaches the rest of the industry, the mass majority will only start to have inklings that the transfer speeds are kinda slow.

Apple has always issued partial specs carefully manipulated to make their product look good.

The rest they hide or make very hard to find.

True story. This is how they are able to hide the inferior (to their immediate predecessors) graphics on the 13" MacBook Pro and the lower end 15" MacBook Pro under the fact that the chips are all Sandy Bridge (and quad-core in the case of the low-end 15").

So if I buy a 3g model do I have to pick ATT or Verizon? Or will one model do both (meaning I could switch back and forth every other month if I had a reason to)?

There's a GSM one for AT&T and a CDMA one for Verizon. You can buy one, but your choice of carrier is in your choice of 3G-enabled iPad.

Apple just slashed the original iPad 16GB WiFi to $399! Refurbs now $349. I might just have to pick up one of these for mom..

Yup, I'm strongly considering one for myself now that the iPad 1 is actually affordable. I don't need an iPad to be the latest and greatest, I can have that mentality for iPod touches if I have to have that mentality about an iOS device at all.

No... real GPS means you don't need to go through a wireless phone company to use it. It's even listed "assisted GPS" for a reason as to differentiate it's usability. Assisted is handicapped... The Tom Tom dock lets the iPhone work as an un-assited, uncrippled GPS, but for the price of the dock, you can just get a Tom Tom and be done with it. I will never rely on assisted GPS again. You're arguing schematics. No one thinks it's imaginary GPS. We know it exists, but it still is crippled.

Then how come I can use my iPhone GPS to track photo locations in Panama when I have cellular data turned off and no cell service? The assistance only works when needed. It is as if it is there to assist. Get it.

Having signed up and maintained my unlimited data plan with AT&T since the iPhone 1 I am very intrigued by the possibility of using my iPhone 4 as a hotspot - does anyone have any solid info on this? Will AT&T be charging extra?

right. of course streaming video for 6 hours would put you over the 2gb cap. lol.

Thats correct!

If you were smarter than I was and kept an unlimited data plan, that would be very wise indeed. CNet just did a test and the iPhone lasted nearly 6 hours as a hotspot streaming video. Pretty impressive.

Which is amusing. Weren't people saying that TB was going to make USB3 obsolete (which admittedly has higher market penetration than TB does ATM)? Now it isn't important enough to put in a device that could seriously spur adoption?

Some iPad games already have iPhone controller apps and mirroring is not a requirement. Apps programmed for it can output a different image to the TV right now. I still don't see the iPad as being the future of iOS games on the TV though. An app enabled Apple TV (or upgraded AirPlay) would make a lot more sense.

Cameras

I have noticed a lot of you feel the same way about the cameras. Front sure, FaceTime is Apples new baby, though I never use it. Have used Skype on my laptops maybe once every 3 months but that's me and everyones different. So IMO front camera makes sense.
Rear camera to me also makes sense just not a must buy IMO, from day 1 with my current iPad I pretended it had a cam to see how it would feel, to me awkward, plus it had to be one of the biggest cams on the market. I would prefer an attachment cam if they could make it work well.
I'm not saying this cause now I have "the old one", just what I think cause everything else sounds very cool. Sure a thinner and more powerful iPad would be cool just not a must have for me. Plus if they would ruin my unlimited data plan I rather have my current iPad (of course that's speculation).
Only real negative is if 4G is around the corner, if it's coming on iPhone 5 then Apple should have waited, if not then no big deal. I'm happy that Apple is keeping up on technology, and happy for those who waited for iPad 2.

Tablets don't have USB3 either ;)

TB would have made a good tech demo and I had hoped they would add it for that reason, but from a practical standpoint, not many people would get much use of it this generation, especially sense Apple as finally provided HDMI out.

A bigger question - will there be an unlimited data plan offered on the Verizon iPads on March 11th ? I know the unlimited plan on iPhones are rumored to be gone by the Summer - but an unlimited plan on a verizon iPad would be a big thing for me - I purchased my iPad just a little too late for the unlimited AT&T plans....don't want to miss out on the verizon plans if there are any....

AFAIK Apple are using a cell chip that has GPS and a few other things built in. To add GPS to the non-cell models would require a different GPS chip and probably mother board changes that don't warrant the cost. if they can save that cost *and* up-sell you to a 3G model, that works to their gain.

It annoys the hell out of me, cos GPS is the only feature the 3G model offers that I want. So I make do with no GPS, and I sulk.

That's what I thought.

I have an older digital camera that takes better pictures than my iphone but doesn't have gps. What I do is take a picture on the iphone to get the gps data and then add that to the other pics later.

I also think you're looking at what an iPad 3 would have too....

So far, I believe a TB port and Retina Display would make the iPad 3 very desirable for 2012 ! Remember, Apple LOVES to miss out "bleeding edge" functionality and sell it at a later stage...!
