Anyone complaining about a VGA camera not being good enough... Go read about resolution sizes. The CCD will be good quality to take on the near HD resolution.

People expecting a retina screen... Get real.

Complaints about the design... Pretty subjective. Personally I am camp original iPad over the iPad 2. May warm to it when the iPad 3 is out at Christmas time. Would die for a white iPad 1' but hey-ho.

Let the iOS 5 wait begin. I'm more gunning that than a half baked hardware update.

Nice update.

I don't understand the whining about the cameras.
They do what they are made for. They are not real cameras. They are for facetime and they are good enough for that.

Meh.. it really is a matter of opinion. I am not happy about the quality of Facetime on a VGA camera. If you are, then you are definitely entitled to yours. I hope you understand now.

Winner!

For someone like me who has skipped the first generation, this is a GREAT update! Will get mine as soon as I can order online. Wish they would accept pre-orders online.

Wow, no Thunderbolt! Really?!? Epic failure on Apple's part. This was really Apple's opportunity to showcase their new technology. Are they trying for a FireWire repeat?

I almost laughed out loud at an improper moment while following the bloggers when Jobs announced it had HDMI output - then a photo popped up of the presentation with their absurd $39 dongle. Whoa! Hasn't Apple been pushing the smaller video ports for a reason???

Lol. I guess no one understands what TB is supposed to be used for. Wouldn't it be the same issue with TB? Which devices as of right now support a TB connection? I just don't understand why anyone would want a TB connection on an iPad! External storage? For what? If you need to store your video externally, then why are you using an iPad to exit it? Music? are you going to carry around external drives to store your music on? That doesn't make any sense. For the iPad, the only sensable TB option is external displays and as of right now, there are only apply displays that support the TB connection.. so whats the point? Why not use a common connector(like HDMI!) to connect to displays?! It makes sense. Stop complaining about no TB connection.

I think the iPad2 is cool, they managed to cut the size down, double the speed, and keep the battery life and price the same. To me, that is pretty impressive.

Will I buy one? No. Will my younger siblings buy one? Yes.

I think this is going to sell like hotcakes.

I can't help but think about the new Apple iPad Cover and how there are companies that do nothing but cases and sleeves etc. and yet none of them ever managed to come up with anything truly unique. Apple, on the the other hand, is primarily focused on the actual devices but still manages to outsmart the dedicated case/sleeve makers who exist solely to make cases. Very Apple-like.
Uh, yeah ... because the 3rd party case designers make the decisions about what features go into the iPad - NOT!

SUCKS!

I just snapped a photo of my keyboard with my iPod touch. The characters of the keyboard are unreadable on the photo. That's how bad the back camera on the iPod touch is.

And these geniuses decided to take the iPod touch cameras and slap them on the iPad, which has a 10 inch screen?! That has to be a joke! And they have no freaking LED-flash. Unless you're shooting on a beach in mid-summer, most photos and videos shot with it, will be utterly useless.

Oh damn, I was planning on shooting landscapes with my iPad 2, NOT!

The cameras on these things are meant for video conferencing, and by my account, unless you're a movie star or model, a slightly less detailed camera is gonna be your friend. And even though you're whining like a star, I'm guessing you're just like the rest of us and look better on a $4, 3 mp camera than on $7,000, 25 mp camera.

It sounds like the rumors were true. This is an improvement over the first gen, but perhaps the next model will be out in the fall.

This is a pretty nice upgrade, especially for someone who doesn't have an iPad already and may have been waiting to see what this one would bring. However, for me, it doesn't (seem to) address the 3 biggest shortcomings (for my needs) in my wife's iPad 1:

  • Memory - it gets especially tiring waiting for Safari to reload pages because it had to dump the cache. Actually, since Apple never advertises iOS device memory, we don't know about this one. I give it about a 75% chance of having 512 MB, but really a gigabyte would be much much better.

  • Storage - we got a 16 GB model because of the price point, and it's more than enough for everyday around the house use; but I find myself wishing for much more (at the same price) for an upcoming trip. Both for movies on the plane and for storing photos from the cameras.

  • Screen readability in bright light / sunlight. Too bad the rumors about a better display in this aspect, even if the same resolution, didn't come to fruition.

So, no iPad 2 for us. Maybe a discounted refurb iPad 1 might be nice to address the second point of storage, but then I just don't see a need for 2 iPads in the house (the wife uses it 95% of the time, and I'm fine with that). We'll see what comes next year. ;)

Hello, NO ONE yet has any idea about how much RAM is in the iPad 2. AND, more importantly, NO ONE knew how much RAM the iPad 1 had on annoucment or until someone really did a break down analysis physically after it was released. I guarantee they had to add more RAM to this model with what the competition is releasing so everyone can relax because apple does not advertise the same way everyone else does!

Nice update! I think I'm fine with the first gen for now, but it should keep the iPad competitive for 2011. Does anyone know the RAM yet?

Not mirroring. That's only for iPad2.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC953ZM/A?fnode=MTc0MjU4NjE&mco=MjEzNTM2MDM

iPad 1 users get 720P HDMI out with no mirroring.

From that page:

Mirroring supported only by iPad 2.
Video out supports up to 1080p for iPad 2 and up to 720p for iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod touch (4th generation). Movies play at up to 720p.

This was a more impressive update than I was expecting. Very nice.

Just an insanely talented group of people over there. They could probably take some time off to laze around on the beach and come back in a couple years and still find the competition struggling to catch up. :)
Or, they could start working nights and weekends, and get some work done on the actual Mac computer side of the house. Final Cut update? Yes, please!

so.... do you think this June, apple will release an apple tv, with an A9 and the 9 times GPU, and release it with ios 5 that makes it into a game console?!

I think the point is that these covers can only work if Apple had built magnets into the iPad, which they did.

3rd party companies need to design around what they're given. Apple can design the case and in the innards/exterior in tandem to support their own needs.

Really disappointed that the display was not upgraded. I could care less about 2 cameras, improved GarageBand and iMovie and no way I want it white. Just missed for me on several fronts. My husband's going to have to wait a little while longer for my old iPad1 until the new iPad3 comes out

Where.......... they say its 9x time faster ( than what ?, they dont precise it)

You're funny. I'm looking around my office for the video camera.

Am I being punked?

I tell you what, watch the video on the same web page if you can't see or believe the reference in performance improvements is directly and specifically compared to the previous iPad model. In the video, which is on the same overview page, they say (and this is an exact quote from the video) :

The iPad 2 really builds on the success of the original iPad. It's a third thinner, and up to 15% lighter. It has an all-new dual core A5 chip, which is up to twice as fast and up to 9 times the graphics performance.

That is a direct, stated comparison of the numbers also printed on the web page. Not implied, or indirect in any way. Hopefully this shows "they precise it" as a performance measurement as compared to the previous model.

Please forgive me. I have to say it. I heard that if you wrap it in a blanket and hold it really, really tight against your body in the fetal position, you will lose your WiFi and 3G signal:p:D

And your self respect.

This is clearly and iPad "S" model and not the Ipad2...lol

I don't think this is valid because the 3GS looked EXACTLY the same and Apple positioned it as an upgrade and not something completely new. It was part of the marketing (or so I thought).

The iPad 2 is completely redesigned and the internals are upgraded. The iPhone 4 was seen as a huge upgrade because they changed the design and added so much to it. And let's be honest, changing the design is enough for a lot of people to get excited and see it as a completely new product. People saw the 3GS and it looked exactly the same as the 3G and saw it is a slight upgrade even though it was a bigger improvement than it was for the 2G to the 3G phone.

So basically I am saying that Apple is positioning this more than an "S" upgrade and even went as far to completely change the design to get this message across.

No, but they've clearly made the point that they can do 1080p on an iOS class device if they just put their minds to it.

I suspect the AppleTV will languish for yet another year before getting a modest bump.

Notice they didn't even announce iOS 4.3 for the ATV alongside everything else.
