FaceTime, especially for :

- families (let grandma see the kids playing)
- business conferencing (quick shot of the white board with dodgy sketches)

it's purely a convenience thing, but something that you can get used to having real fast.

yeah, but since I have to cameras in my mobile phone (now just one) since 2005/6 and I only used once the front camera, and very rarely the front camera, I don't see them as compelling features.

I think the gpu+cpu+battery are way more important.

I also think you're looking at what an iPad 3 would have too....

So far, I believe a TB port and Retina Display would make the iPad 3 very desirable for 2012 ! Remember, Apple LOVES to miss out "bleeding edge" functionality and sell it at a later stage...!

Actually, my bet is USB3, not TB in the next iPad. The chipsets to Intels next "tock", Ivy Bridge, will ship with USB3 so any mac with Ivy Bridge will have it, and the ipad isn't doing heavy enough i/o to need a TB port.

No retina display......... wtf.

Not going to buy this ipad. Basicly ipad 1 with 2 cameras.

wow....

With a twice-as-fast CPU and up to 9 times faster graphics? That's not an upgrade? So if they came out with a new 13" MBP that upped the processor from 2.3 GHz dual-core to 2.3 GHz quad-core, and made it 33% thinner, you would say it is basically the same?

OK, . . . . ummmm . . . sure . .

If I had the original iPad - there isn't really enough to upgrade from but I've been waiting for this one so I'll be a proud owner at the end of the month (that's the price you pay for living North of the Border.....)

Wow, no Thunderbolt! Really?!? Epic failure on Apple's part. This was really Apple's opportunity to showcase their new technology. Are they trying for a FireWire repeat?

I almost laughed out loud at an improper moment while following the bloggers when Jobs announced it had HDMI output - then a photo popped up of the presentation with their absurd $39 dongle. Whoa! Hasn't Apple been pushing the smaller video ports for a reason???

My other disappointment was the 3G being carrier specific. This was not clear from the bloggers I was following. Too bad, this was Apple's chance to make AT&T/Verizon compete on data pricing.

All in all, I'll probably end up buying one of these. I was waiting for a front camera - I think this is a bigger game changer than people might think, especially if Skype supports it. Dual core is also a needed upgrade. That said, I'll probably wait a few months and see what Android offers.

You may not, others do. If I didn't already have FaceTime on my iPhone, I'd never have bought an iPad 1.

Almost as heavy. Still no real GPS. Same price is doing me a "favor" with all the competition offering thinner, lighter, cheaper, more open OS?

None of the competitors do any of those things let alone all of them lol.

Notice how they say twice as fast and 9x faster gfx but compared to *?????*

You conclude that it might be compared to the ipad 1 's processor but maybe and surely not. ( might be compared to another processor they tryed or something. To be a valid argument, they must explicitly compared these statements to something. They did not, for a reason, its not a coincidence)

Good marketing.

33% thinner... ok cool brah.

Some of you people make me sick in your endless complaints about what this upgrade should have been. I personally find it the perfect transition from first to second generation. Some complain about storage options, really? Everything is moving to the cloud, I'm actually downgrading my storage. Others complain that its not worth the upgrade price if you have an iPad 1. Well I just sold my iPad 1 for over $500 on eBay. That pretty much gets me a new one for less than a $100 bucks. Are you not savvy enough to figure this out? As far as the screen goes, they didn't upgrade it because it would have increased the price and the battery life. Then you would be complaining about two things instead of one. The screen is fine as it is. I don't take it outside much so glare and sunlight complaints are just stupid. Okay and my favorite the 4G outcry. Really? It's in like what four neighborhoods in America right now and no where overseas yet. Why make the device more expensive for a feature that only about 2% of the market could utilize. LTE is a year away from even remotely becoming accessible to the masses. For all these reasons is why their competition is going to fail. You can't have all of that in a price zone that is affordable to consumers. You have to find a happy medium and in the process deliver a device that is easy and fun to use. I don't see this from the competition. While HP's TouchPad looks neat, by the time it comes out iOS 5 will be out and push HP to the side. Sheesh... you people are just never satisfied.

I have the 64gb 3G iPad 1 but I will getting the iPad 2, why? My father did labour/craftsmen jobs all his life, he's never used the internet(english not being his first language and keyboards intimidate him) but the iPad has changed it. Being in the I.T, developer field I'm happy to say he's stolen my iPad

As an upgrade, underwhelming. I will definitely stick with my first gen iPad at least until the iPad3 comes out. The lack of a higher res screen is the biggest problem, and what really makes this more of a version 1.5 rather than a version 2. The only really significant upgrade is the processor speed, but iOS and apps are optimized already for the current processor speed, so I'm not sure how meaningful that is. The camera is de rigueur these days I suppose, and probably should have been in the first version from that point of view, but I don't expect to ever take a picture with a tablet, so I understand why they didn't include it originally. Beyond that, the changes are really just cosmetic, and I actually like the first version's squared edges a lot more than the new tapered edges.

Huh? They compared it to iPad 1. That's pretty explicit, and clear. It's on their site. You don't even make sense with your remark.
Dual-core A5 chip.
It’s fast, times two.
Two powerful cores in one A5 chip mean iPad can do twice the work at once.

Superfast graphics.
Go, gamers, go.
With up to nine times the graphics performance, gameplay on iPad is even smoother and more realistic.

The RAM specs were on the same slide as the pricing specs. They remain, alas, the same.

I didn't see them on the slide...

Also, Apple cannot expect people to do "serious" movie editing on 256 MB of RAM. There is no way it is 256.

Could GarageBand even run well on 256 MB on top of what other apps and the system uses?

Nice update.

I don't understand the whining about the cameras.
They do what they are made for. They are not real cameras. They are for facetime and they are good enough for that.

The speed boost is great but really only necessary for two things:
games (irrelevant) and future proofing (I can see my iPad1 being left out with iOS6 latest)

White looks amazing, lighter is definitely a plus.

However all in all not enough that I need to update my iPad1 right now. I'll wait and see what iOS5 brings. If that is more open and needs the CPU power then I will upgrade.

so how the heck am i supposed to sell my 3 month old ipad when they have lowered the price already? i am gonna lose so much money
and freaking apple is supposed to hold their value - yeah right kiss my ass! :(

This is clearly and iPad "S" model and not the Ipad2...lol

Positives:

1. more power.

Negatives

1. low end cameras
2. no flash for camera
3. no stereo speakers
4. no screen improvement (OMG!)
5. ugly design (IMOP)
6. no new killer feature!

I will happily keep my old ipad 32

Where.......... they say its 9x time faster ( than what ?, they dont precise it)

720p? No way! Everyone else is going to being playing catch-up to get that brand new standard baby! Oh yeah. In about 10 years, Apple will probably go to 1080p and everyone else will be playing catch-up all over again! :D

Everyone seems to have missed the biggie.

New AirPlay.

Apps streamed now.

Apple just challenged consoles HARD and no one has noticed yet.

My iPhone controller will be able to control apps on my iPad, my Mac, or my Apple TV.

Wow.

Wooow.

How did you miss this? This is HUGE.

yeah but that will be true of first gen ipads with the software update too

This was a more impressive update than I was expecting. Very nice.

I can't help but think about the new Apple iPad Cover and how there are companies that do nothing but cases and sleeves etc. and yet none of them ever managed to come up with anything truly unique. Apple, on the the other hand, is primarily focused on the actual devices but still manages to outsmart the dedicated case/sleeve makers who exist solely to make cases. Very Apple-like.

Just an insanely talented group of people over there. They could probably take some time off to laze around on the beach and come back in a couple years and still find the competition struggling to catch up. :)

I noticed you can only get it at 5pm. What time do you think I should go to the Apple Store??? Do you think that there will be enough stock at 5pm? (I'm talking about an Apple store in Orlando)
