That despite your like or dislike of her, she is successful and even you apparently follow her to some extent. No one, or thing, can be everything to everyone. You just need to be something to enough people to be successful. Apple is certainly that, because their products are certainly that.
Right, but just because something is "successful" doesn't mean it's a good product.

Ok, you designed a great tablet device (apart from the fact no one has ever bought one.) Beautiful specifications, nice build quality probably. Lots of user interface development work. Marvelous effort! Except one thing... your device is a year late.

It is too thick. Too expensive. Too heavy. Too little battery life (most likely). Too few apps. Too few great apps (how will you compete with the likes of amazing “eye candy” apps such as Garage Band and iMovie?) A rather unknown, untested interface that people may or may not like. Too few developers that really want to be involved (how can they make any $$?)

And now Apple produces iPad2. A device no one “needs” but everyone “wants.” Sort of the supermodel that is happy to hang around you. Granted the Apple device exists in a walled garden. But it’s a garden with many delights, and no snakes.

Good luck Blackberry and HP!

Note: I actually really like what I see of the Web OS. It seems polished, capable and fun. I hope it does succeed. I doubt they will succeed in tablets anytime soon, though. Maybe phones is the place to be to (re)establish it?

The iPad has the lowest entry level now has that the original iPad dropped $100. Bye bye competition.

Dunno if I've missed this being said already, but I was thinking about two rumors in particular that didn't seem to come true and thinking maybe they're related.

First, we had the rumors of the retina display, followed by rumors that it was delayed.

Then we had rumors that the iPad itself was delayed and wouldn't debut until April, then September.

What if they're both true, but only in a sense?

What if the current iPad was never intended to get the retina display, but in September Apple intends to introduce the iPad HD, positioned at the top end of the line, with the retina display, selling it alongside the current iPad 2?

I have no inside sources here and make no claims to truth, only speculation, but it would fit the other rumors.

Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Output

Did anyone else notice in the tech specs that iPad 2 will be able to output 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound through the Apple Digital AV Adapter?

Why don't we know more about the rear facing camera. The official specs list 720p video, but nothing about the still photos.

What's even worse, the press had access to some demo units for at least a couple hours. Why didn't someone test the camera?

Everyone seems to have missed the biggie.

Apple just challenged consoles HARD and no one has noticed yet.

Thats like saying my Calculator is challenging the iPhone 'HARD'

I have the iPad 1, I wont be upgrading because I still have what I think is an amazing product, I love it.

The iPad 2 is even better.

Well done Apple, another winning product.

I've been reading this thread since Wednesday's announcement... all I have to say is I can NOT wait for Friday and getting my hands on my shiny new white iPad 3G! 9 days feels like an eternity and I'm like a kid waiting for Santa to come.

Can you tell, this will be my first iPad? I don't like buying 1st gen Apple products so I've made myself wait an entire year to get my hands an iPad. It's been a long year! Haha

I'm sure I'll be glad I waited!

Windows, Palm and Symbian were he first PDA/phones available, long before the mobile PDA phone market was a gleam in little Stevie's eyes. The PocketPC ruled the mobile OS marketshare for several years before Apple even got into the game.

HAHAHA What? I am not talking about PDA's. I am talking about advanced smart phones. And granted, Apple was not the first to do a smart phone, nor a portable tablet, but damn they did it well.

And seriously, have you never heard of Newton by chance? It came out in apple PDA's even years before the first Palm device.

Try again, hater.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

Haha this sounds like my exact situation haha. I want a white 16g wifi sooo bad!!! I'm going and waiting from 7am Friday morning and getting the hdmi adapter and the smart cover!

What are you getting?

wow

i really can't believe this product at this time. i've lost almost all faith in apple. it's like they strategically cripple their devices so that theres something to "upgrade" next year. this camera on the ipad 2 isn't even usable? cmon apple, you only did this so that next year steve can get on stage and say 'better camera'. sorry but the illusion is all unraveling now. theres no innovation coming from apple. they changed the game with the iphone. then what, 4 years later, we have an OS that is essentially unchanged, just minor changes here and there. then finally a tablet, that is literally a huge version of an already existing device running the same OLD OS.

you can all sit here and stroke apple all day, and while i do love some of their products, patience is pretty much gone at this point. no i will not be purchasing an ipad because it simply doesn't serve a function that i would like it to. for a "portable" device i need usb ports, file system, i need hd functionality, i don't need a huge ipod.

look how much android has changed in the last 15 months, and look at how much iOS has changed in the last 4 years. it's a TOTAL COMPLETE JOKE. there is still no real multitasking going on. all of these responses to the camera that resemble " who cares about the camera anyway" well it's pretty much all that's been ugraded so if you don't care i guess there isn't a reason to upgrade eh? i'm so sick of this attitude, it was the same thing with MMS, multitasking. i remember prior to MMS being in iOS everyone was like MMS is dead nobody cares about it anyway. then THE DAY IT LAUNCHED everyone was whining that it wasn't working and att nearly shut down due to iphone users bombarding the system.

i own iOS devices, i own android devices, linux computers, blackberry's. i'm part of a myriad of online forums, NO group disilusions themselves like apple users. go on xda developers and look at windows phone and android users. they rip the os's to shreds with criticisms while loving it. there's no 'well google creates this experience that's just magical' going on like it does here. it's just ridiculous anymore. the biggest difference honestly is those communities can change most of what they don't like unlike iOS which seems to be pretty against development at this point.

i'm in disbelief that apple slapped a 1 megapixel camera on this thing, total astonishment.

In the world of technology a company is only 18 months away from being out of vogue. Anything can happen. Personally, I would like Apple to have more competition.

Means we get better gear and maybe slightly less costly.

The understatement of the year. :p

I'm surprised they included a camera at all considering a camera on a tablet is a dumb idea. You're right, the thing is a piece of crap and they'll sell none.

The reason Android changes so much is because it's a piece of unfinished junk. iOS is polished and user friendly. If it was garbage they'd have to change it every month too.

I think the post-pc era will look a lot like the pre-PC era.

So don't think HP and RIM will be playing so much in same park as Apple.
BC(before computers) there were basically two kinds of workers, those that had all their tools provided by the company, those who where expected to provide their own as part of the package. The second group where always free to choose whatever produced the outcome.

Indeed Apple* targeted this group as they were more open to useful change.
HP have always targeted the first group, well more so the corporate buyers who decide for the first group, RIM seem to have a similar take on things. For them any consumer sales are bonus. Both those guys can be successful without being as visible.

So Apple needs the best stores both Apps and Media. They need to be and stay the best platform for people who have control of their own workflow. With stores that offer the best tools for those workflows.

HP and RIM need to work with existing corporate systems and to help them progress in to good trouble free mobile experiences, that help keep the back end guys doing their jobs not babysitting users. Yes the overall user experience will be important, including measured numbers like battery life or speed. The measure of Work done will be the deciding factor. WebOS certainly looks very good in that regard.

*When I say Apple I mean all of Apple both Mac's and iDevices. I think the company at least under Steve has always had an eye on how Technology change progresses and have always planned based on the end game not the current state. So even though they don't say it I think they view the OSX Mac as much as a post-PC device as any of their other devices.

That was very well said. I think that you have managed to say, very succinctly, what a lot of us are and have been feeling. Thank you!

Excellent post! You've covered some very important points.

What I find revealing about the Apple lovers that post, is they're so insecure & have so much fear about Android, that they use strong language to bash it.

If the iPad made them happy they'd have no need to get as angry as their posts reveal. They'd be busy enjoying their iPads instead of spewing hate.

Or, if they had a point to make they'd talk about specifics in an intelligent, unemotional manner.

Here's an example below, where the person writing the post says "it's a piece of unfinished junk".

The reason Android changes so much is because it's a piece of unfinished junk.

What does that mean?

It doesn't tell us anything other than he or she feels compelled to call it "junk".

That's a rather crude label. One that is inappropriate given that most software is in development and once released still tends to have potential issues once in the hands of users.

This applies to all software. It's why bug fixes are issued as these glitches surface.

The bottom line is considering they feel their Apple devices are so superior, why all the hate and anger?

I would think they would be celebrating and happy.

i remember prior to MMS being in iOS everyone was like MMS is dead nobody cares about it anyway. then THE DAY IT LAUNCHED everyone was whining that it wasn't working and att nearly shut down due to iphone users bombarding the system.

Not the MMS thing again. The iPhone3G was shipping in what 70 countries for 2-3months with full working MMS before the One American Carrier finally got it's act together, after 18months (and at least 1+years of planning).

Look at how Android is being screwed over by American Phone Companies and update support.

Clearly the dynamics in America's mobile market are to blame for that little chestnut. Still everyone likes to blame Apple for things like that.

Also still confused what everyone refers to as "Real" multi-tasking?

Yes Apple systems makes the developer jump throw hoops that wouldn't be acceptable on a Desktop. We aren't talking desktop or even laptop. We are talking mobile/adhoc usage devices*. I don't want developers to be lazy I want them to really think about why they need to background a task, that way I can be lazy and not think about computery stuff (unless I want to).

Yet most the calls I've seen for "real" mutli-tasking seem to want it to allow lazy developers. I've yet to see an example of a multi-tasking situation not allowed by the current system that would be beneficial to the user. Happy to be educated otherwise.

As for the camera, if they are that important to you then it's a good thing the market has some very nice options either currently or near future.

*Even when used for creation purposes the overall usage model is adhoc. Which makes it nicely focused for someone easily distracted like me. Yes I would like a vast improvement to notifications for that reason.

how is android being screwed? samsung didn't want to update their phones. Motorola and HTC are good at updating their phones for a year or more.

Sorry I took
Mighty Eagle's comments at face value....

While there are many devices and carriers that use Android, “device fragmentation (is) not the issue,” Vesterbacka said, “but rather the fragmentation of the ecosystem. So many different shops, so many different models. The carriers messing with the experience again. Open but not really open, a very Google-centric ecosystem. And paid content just doesn’t work on Android.”

You get some one like that talking about carriers messing with the experience then you tend to think people complaining about update support probably have legitimate grievances.
