But my question was not about the software, I'm aware of it. I was inquiring about the RAM, but thanks for asking...

"Don't look at whats in my left hand, look at what I have in my right hand!"

Kinda rude considering he answered your question... I notice you didn't quote that part of his response.

Don't be mad. It's not unusual for Apple to make evolutionary steps when updating their products. The iPad is a consumer product first and foremost so it will be a while before any pro-features trickle down to the iPad. Giving everyone, a be-all, end-all device is not good for business generally speaking. Apple needs you to shell out for iPad 3 after all.

I think it's a decent update overall. That being said, when the iPad goes retina, that's when I'll jump in :D

Can’t decide if this is an iPad 1.5 or 1.4. Perhaps the name "iPad Lacking" is more fitting. I'll wait for the REAL iPad 2.

Positives
- Size
- Camera
- Speed
- More case options

Negative
- No LP/TB Support (no port or controller) makes this a relic before its even sold
- RAM ???
- No ‘world’ model; its either CDMA or GSM.
- Screen Resolution is the same
- No super-special daylight viewable screen
- Design has not soul
- GPS not on the Wi-Fi model
- No vibration motor for alerts or games

There is no actual camera app on the iPad, the only way you can use it is with Facetime, or If you buy iMovie, you can record 720p quality video and work on it straight away. But because of the crap quality Apple has not included a still camera on the device.

It does have PhotoBooth, though. Of course, that's designed to use the front camera, but no word yet if it can use the back as well.

Agreed. Apple may not always have bleeding edge specs, but they more than make up with excellent build quality and polished, easy to use software. They can get away with steady pricing because their products sell. Also Apple products have historically had very high resale value, a big plus in my book.

Do you really think the other companies are lowering the prices out of the goodness of their heart? They lower the prices because that's the only way to sell the stuff when it gets near EOL. If they could keep the prices the same, they certainly would.

Apple keeps the prices high because they keep selling.

There will always be haters and fanboys. Seems like a release of something new really brings out the trolls. I mean who wants to hold up a giant iPad to take a picture? Yet people complain a 5 MP camera isn't included. Go figure.

This is IMHO a very nice step I the iPads evolution. Apple is killing the competitors with a giant install base, tens of thousands more apps, and will rule the tablet market in 2011.

Even with all the whiners on here the release will be a huge success and millions will be sold.

Go :apple:

Thanks Apple for releasing the IPad 1.5 which houses 80% of the same technology the iPad 1 had. Thank you very much!

Given that the two banner apps previewed today are iPad2 only, I'm fairly confident it is.

yes one of those apps Imovie requires 512MB ram and will not run on the old Ipad 1...except for Garage Band which will run on either Ipad.

Also the built in app that can do 9 video streams at a time....no way that there is only 256MB of ram in it...more like 512mb or 1GB...

Ok people are not looking at this right...the Ipad 2 is much thinner...and sexier...and it has a dual core CPU and a dual or quad core GPU...and more ram...and the same battery life.....and will output 1080p video...

how is this just Ipad 1.5? This is Ipad 2...get over it.

The Ipad 3 will have the retina display and quadcore A8 processor.

Did you expect it to include a fridge and teleporter? Computing devices are ultimately about . . . well . . . the computer . . .

They changed the fundamental engine of the product with the very significant CPU upgrade. Doubling performance is not a "bump". And Graphics improvements of up to 9 times is very major for a device that is graphically driven and interfaced with. It still needed a screen, a case, volume . . . etc. If you look at a iMac today and 3 years ago, they don't really vary much in 80% of the technology. But the 3-year-old model can't keep up with today's. Even thought the screen is about the same, case design is the same. Same keyboard. I just don't know why people set the bar so high for a one year change. It's like everyone expected the update to look like something out of "The Minority Report".

Britney Spears sold 20+ million records, too... what's your point?

That despite your like or dislike of her, she is successful and even you apparently follow her to some extent. No one, or thing, can be everything to everyone. You just need to be something to enough people to be successful. Apple is certainly that, because their products are certainly that.

I don't think this is valid because the 3GS looked EXACTLY the same and Apple positioned it as an upgrade and not something completely new. It was part of the marketing (or so I thought).

The iPad 2 is completely redesigned and the internals are upgraded. The iPhone 4 was seen as a huge upgrade because they changed the design and added so much to it. And let's be honest, changing the design is enough for a lot of people to get excited and see it as a completely new product. People saw the 3GS and it looked exactly the same as the 3G and saw it is a slight upgrade even though it was a bigger improvement than it was for the 2G to the 3G phone.

So basically I am saying that Apple is positioning this more than an "S" upgrade and even went as far to completely change the design to get this message across.

lol. my point was that its not enough of an upgrade.. non stereo speakers no high res screen...lol

Why do people want this to be an MBP in an ipad body?

cause MBP is damn near perfect! and i believe that that is where the ipad will end up..

Point being is that a white iPad means a white iPhone 5 this June :D

Can't wait for iPhone 5!

one problem...white electronics are ugly..

The iPad 2 is more for the people that never bought the first iPad, you know, it's worth it to get it now because of all the upgrades for the same price, but if you already own an iPad, I'd say wait for the iPad 3.

exactly what i will be doing:)

I think I'm gonna get a $499 model and keep it for 9 months and try and get $350-375 for it just before Christmas. I think someone would pay that for a pristine iPad 2... Yes? No?

If I get $375, that's like renting it for $12 a month!

my how capitalism has messed us up..lol

I never expected a retina display, I was looking forward to at the very least an improvement to the display, and there was non whatsoever. Not even the anti reflective rumour we were hearing about. That in itself is shameful as apple pride themselves in carrying the latest technology in their products, and now the iPad can no longer claim to have the highest resolution screen on all tablets (and not even 1 gb of ram like most tablets will have). apple without any doubt could have improved the screen (even add retina now I reckon), but chose not to because apple loyalists will still shell out the cash for a new iPad. Sad, really.

I seriously doubt they will change the release date. It is March for a reason. They use the holidays to draw down their inventory, otherwise they would be stale after the holidays and they wouldn't clear out as much stock. And they wait until March because people will only wait so long with holiday money burning a hole in their pocket.

About the new cover, I wonder if those magnetic clips will scratch or mar the iPad with all the snapping on and off.

The screen resolutions are essentially the same, very minor variation, between all the 10" class tablets. So no tablet out there is better than the iPad if you take all the specs into account. But the iPad is the cheapest. So they are staying up with the cutting edge and offering it for the best price. That's all I want. I don't want a "retina" display for $1,000. They have to build to the majority consumer. Listen to all the complaints of the Apple loyal on here, saying that it costs too much. That Retina display will have a cost, including on performance. Battery Life, graphics, dollars. There will be a time for it, but Apple, to stay competitive in this exploding market, has to stay affordable. The average person out there couldn't tell you one thing about screen resolution and pixel density. They do much more fundamental comparisons in the products out there.

After watching the Keynote I'm going to go ahead and eBay my 64 Gig WiFi with the :apple: case and buy the 32 Gig iPad 2. I really don't need the 64 gig, sheesh I still have 40+ gig left, so the 32 should work just fine for me.

IMHO the iPad 2 feels a little outdated to me, mostly because of the over-sized bezel and lack of a customized iOS to accommodate the larger screen. I personally couldn't care less about how much RAM or storage capacity it has.

Thanks

Hmm, I don't know if such an app exists... But it would technically be possible. All apps are allowed to save data in their own "sandbox" (GoodReader, Keynote, iCab, etc). Some of these apps also enable the feature so that you can use iTunes to copy files to or from their sandboxes. It would be allowable for someone to write an app that lets you dump a "site" archive (or something) from iTunes into the app, then go access those pages from the iPad only.

I guess I'll have to dig deeper then. I hope I can find such an app.

Note to Blackberry/HP WebOS staff:

Ok, you designed a great tablet device (apart from the fact no one has ever bought one.) Beautiful specifications, nice build quality probably. Lots of user interface development work. Marvelous effort! Except one thing... your device is a year late.

It is too thick. Too expensive. Too heavy. Too little battery life (most likely). Too few apps. Too few great apps (how will you compete with the likes of amazing “eye candy” apps such as Garage Band and iMovie?) A rather unknown, untested interface that people may or may not like. Too few developers that really want to be involved (how can they make any $$?)

And now Apple produces iPad2. A device no one “needs” but everyone “wants.” Sort of the supermodel that is happy to hang around you. Granted the Apple device exists in a walled garden. But it’s a garden with many delights, and no snakes.

Good luck Blackberry and HP!

Note: I actually really like what I see of the Web OS. It seems polished, capable and fun. I hope it does succeed. I doubt they will succeed in tablets anytime soon, though. Maybe phones is the place to be to (re)establish it?
