It baffles me that anyone can get worked up over the name, much less have the name be a deciding factor on whether or not to buy it. Weird. o_O
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not worked up over it and it’s not a deciding factor at all, I just think they could have made their lineup a lot more elegant with a better naming scheme. I’m mainly saying his for people who aren’t very tech oriented.

In my opinion car model designations are just as confusing and people figure them out.

11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max

That seems like a pretty straightforward naming scheme. At least to me. They're all 11, and it's obvious which way the lineup goes from modest to more equipped.

Certainly, I find it far better than XR, XS, XS Max (what is the 'R'?) ... or 8, 8 Plus, X. ('X' .. or 10 ... if it's 10, there's also an 8, what happened to 9?).

We have seriously lost sight of the origin of the word “pro”. It used to mean “professional”, but now it means “more features at a higher price point, but has nothing to do with anything professional”.

Please? Are there really professional phone users?
It's not that hard to figure out.

Within the context of Apple devices, "max" or "plus" typically means larger, while "pro" means improved in some way.

For example, the iPhone XS and XS Max are practically the same phones in terms of specs, just that the latter has a larger display than the former.

Meanwhile, the iPad Pro has better specs than the iPad and until recently, was the only model which supported the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. Same with the Macbook vs MacBook Pro, or iMac vs iMac Pro.

So in the case of the iPhone, the iphone Pro implies that it has better specs than the iPhone 11 (which primarily comes in the form of better cameras and displays). Likewise, the iPhone 11 Pro Max has a larger display than the iPhone 11 Pro, but they do have the same specs otherwise.

Seems pretty consistent to me.

Exactly. My kids get MBPs for HS with no thought that they were professionals. Heck, I got a MBP in 2007 and have never made a dime on it except some writing that could have been done on a Chromebook. Pro doesn't mean professional any more than a Subaru Outback Sport is only for athletes.

This is going nowhere. Google me and then let’s return to the topic.

Cameras are a great thing for apple to focus on because cameras are a key differentiator between phones.

I feel cameras were no longer a "key" differentiator between phones. Sure this race has been raging on in various forms since the Ericsson T68m/SonyEricsson T68i (released under both original company and merging for phone division before they split in the feature phone era) with add-on camera adapter, just before Samsung included camera's on a slider then SonyEricsson began to show what 2MP camera's could do ... then Nokia with CarlZeiss (on the N90/N92/etc) then the real usable smartphones came along.

We went from the Megapixel race - nobody beat Nokia's 40MP (that I'm aware of) - to the camera quality and Video size. Then to the frames/second in video 30/60/120/240/960fps and now onto low-light/ultra-low light to depth of field. Not withstanding the plethera of camera apps that just give us more.

I feel now it's the ecosystem and features within that is the KEY differentiator along with privacy or fee-for-a-price that hits home. Honestly I'm still done at 1 rear camera ... I'm not visually artistic nor do I have a vision for great photos or dropset.

I cleared mine for him several times.

That just sounds .... wrong. Really wrong.

I think you are missing my point, or completely ignoring so you can post your “take”. It is a consistent naming convention, however, my point was the word “pro” is terribly overused.

Don't forget, US retails don't have to include sales tax in prices, so that's $999+ maybe 3-8% depending on the state you buy it in. If you subtract the UK VAT rate (of 20%), the price of the device is only $30 more in the UK.
Tell me how to buy one VAT free in the UK and i'll agree but seeing as consumers here in the UK can't i stand by my original post that they're having a laugh with the pricing.

Incredible how cheap iphones have become .. I used to change phone every year, then two years and now my iphone will go on 4 years.
The lack of innovation and higher phone prices actually makes my phone budget look good.
The promised innovation did not happen.

Lets say i buy a 700$ phone every second year that is 1400$ in 4 years.. now i buy a 1000$ phone every 4 years.. hokus pokus apple just lost 400$

Yeah but there is only so much you can do with a phone every single year. So of course it would eventually get to a cycle of modest improvements. That was inevitable.

Apple went from a phone with just a screen, to an app store, to finally adding things like a flash for the camera, to 4G, etc. etc. So I am not sure what you were expecting....your phone to turn into a flying spaceship?

They have been giving people things that have long been asked for..the OS is a bit more open, dark mode is here, more color options are here. Next year they will probably have a 5G model. What more do you want? (And don’t say flying spaceship...lol)

Moving slow forward but that is all good... it is the price-jump that bothers me on top of apple behavior in this world:
