I am starting to agree with Gruber. Something's rotten at Apple and it goes beyond the software issues. This is the first time in my life where I am genuinely concerned what is happening there. The new phones are a symptom of a much bigger problem. Not only can they not ship new products they're barely iterating and the iteration is quite frankly bad. They gave up on the car. The Vision Pro is an overpriced joke. The new phones have many questionable choices. It might be time for a leadership change.

A perfect summary of the situation.

I'm right there with you.

👏

They really do, after I saw some videos last night...they simply look like child toys.
Massive turn off. I'm keeping my 13 Pro Max.

I think people will get used to it (if its popular & Apple retains the design moving forward). If we remember, the square "camera bump" from the first "Pro" garnered similar reactions...(if we look back at the comments then, it was same)

But over time, people became used to it, because they were everywhere. You see that square bump in airports, theme parks, malls, subways, on the street & no one thinks anything of it.

Same thing with the notch...initial reactions were not good at all...

I'm not saying this design is great by any means...but I think there's always an acclimation period with these sort of things.

First reactions are usually "Ugh!", then as people see them daily & time goes on, it tapers off & becomes the norm...(until the next redesign)

We became used to it because we had no choice but to just accept it.

That's not acknowledgement of it being "actually good" or anything, nor of reactions to it being no longer being "ugh" .. a reaction I know I personally still have to this day.

I don't disagree with that statement. I was just pointing out an interesting observation, lol.

Even if one the doesn't personally like the aesthetic or design, the conversation doesn't stay focused on the aesthetics of the device...nor prevent people from eventually buying it.

We use these devices throughout the day, so acclimation will occur.

Whenever there are any new (arguably extreme) changes, this is usually the first reaction ("I'd never use that"...it's horrible, terrible, a toy, too bulky, colors are wrong, camera is too big, too small...the notch will make the phone unusable to watch videos, they should've never taken away the home button, I'll never use a phone with face ID, etc.)

Then as people buy, million of iPhones are sold & people get used to it...well...

Personally, I'm not a fan of this design either...but the reaction mirrors all the other newly released designs, haha.

They historically always had problems with this with aluminum.
OK. If Apple is not capable of making aluminum alloy phones with available muted gray or black then they should have stuck with the excellent titanium alloy choices of the 16 Pros. My guess is that the lame color choices on the 17 Pros will drive a fair number of buyers downmarket to the Air or to the 16 Pros.

I will probably still buy a 17 PM for the cameras, but I will hate looking at the silver color every day. Or maybe blue; I will not buy anything until after I can test the cameras. Certainly the 16 PM remains a great phone, so any 17 needs to prove its worth before purchase.

Wondering if the back glass patch will be fused to body and back stepping the affordability and right to repair for when someone breaks it.

I like the new features of the Pro Max (to replace my 15 PM). The design is acceptable at best but these 3 colors are an absolute no go for me, without any doubt.

No, it was a discreet way to acknowledge that titanium suck for high-performance devices and that the 16 Pro was a scam.
"16 Pro was a scam"

Do you know what the word "scam" means? Obviously not. So tired of people using words that they don't know the meaning and definition of.

I was going to buy the iPhone 17 Pro, until I saw there is no black nor space grey option. WTF? So I’d have to buy a regular iPhone 17 with an inferior processor or an overpriced, underpowered iPhone 17 Air to get a color that’s been around since the OG iPhone? I don’t think so. I’m out.

I will not buy an iPhone that’s lighter with worse battery life, a worse camera, etc. that’s generation 1 hardware just for something with bad tradeoffs I don’t want, just to get an acceptable color.

This a a joke. I bet they’ll introduce black in the spring right before the iPhone 18 to nab some suckers.

What a complete and total disappointment. Orange and Deep Blue are straight up fugly. The 1970’s called. They’d like their fugly colors back.
"underpowered iPhone 17 Air"

Theres nothing underpowered about it. Litterally the same CPU and RAM, GPU is minus 1 core, but thats not "underpowered" but any means

Madness.

Then there is the 8X « Optical » which really isn’t. It’s just digital cropping dropping you down from 48MP to 12MP @ 8X. :-(. …. »can’t innovate my ass … »
Complete madness.

If I'm buying a $1300 phone with three cameras, I kinda expect all three cameras to be an upgrade over the technology that was available in 2022...

I was so ready to buy it at launch too. Something i've never done before...

I’m talking about the camera, the lack of being able to take spatial photos, record spatial video and battery life.

They may not technically be underpowered for their size, so that was a poor choice of a word, but it gets the point across to the non-geek crowd. It can’t do what the less expensive model can, so how about not feature complete with even the 17 standard, though that’s a phrase and not a word.
