I'm kinda on the fence.

I like my launch month 13PM. Though it is now 4+ years old. While not thrilled with the look and colors of the 17, I do like the improved battery life and cameras. So if I do go forward, it looks like I will choose between the 17 and the 17PM.

Looks like about the only difference between the Pro and Pro Max version is screen size and battery size, correct? Decisions, decisions.
I'm keeping my 13 Pro Max. Battery life isn't what it used to be but as long as it gets me through the day, I don't care if I'm plugging it in at night with 40% or 10%. For camping or emergencies a standby power bank or battery case is a good idea, even with a new phone.

I went back to skim through the keynote, I totally missed this Steve Jobs quote in the very beginning.
*Sadly, he's rolling over in his grave. 😐

This whole thing got me thinking, maybe I should get a different phone, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Pixel 10 Pro XL both look like quality hardware. RCS messaging has made the one reason I absolutely HAD to have an iPhone far less important.

But then I start to think about my watch, my airpods, my airtags. Dang, its a lot to have to switch...

I have a iPhone 14 Pro Max, I bought a 16PM and then returned it because I didn't find any real difference.

The 17 having the same main camera as the 14 is pretty disappointing. Even if they had brought the square camera sensor to the rear facing camera that would be a massive upgrade. not having to rotate the phone for landscape photos and videos would be game changing.

I'm about 50/50 on if I will get a 17 now or wait until January 2027 to buy a used one. The price staying the same has made me more likely to buy.

I am with you on color. WTF Apple? Not having space gray or equal is totally absurd. I laugh at people who care about color, but it turns put that I do care when there is no simple civilized gray or black choice.
I think we're united in this. Is this Apple's cracker barrel moment? Just kidding. But at same time? This kinda sucks.

I love my Stainless Steel 13 Pro Max and yeah....this new design looks cheap to me. I clearly have to see it in person.

If I upgrade, it won't be pre-order...I've waited 4 years, I can wait until mid October or Nov...(whenever) when its in stores.

*And orange would not be my choice.

The new Pros look like Fisher Price toys.

going to wait a few months to see actual photos from the new iphone.. im good with my 15 Pro max minus the battery

Stunning designs and I love the orange and blue colours. I have a 14PM purple and don´t really need to upgrade, but that orange is just wow. I had many iPhones incl the first and I never went for the black as I find it boring. Though I must admit I got the black Macbook pro, 2 years ago and I love it ;)

The color Orange is like pineapple on pizza... you either love it or hate it.
I love the Cosmic Orange color and orange in general...but I also wanted to buy a black phone this year.

Madness.

Then there is the 8X « Optical » which really isn’t. It’s just digital cropping dropping you down from 48MP to 12MP @ 8X. :-(. …. »can’t innovate my ass … »

Ok, so the tech spec page now says "Anti-reflective coating" but I can't find a single person doing first impressions saying anything about it and I can definitely see reflections in MKBHD's video. Anybody find some hot takes on the screen improvements?

Best thing about keeping phones longer. Any upgrade feels like a big upgrade. The battery on my 13 barely lasts until lunch time now, so the 17 Pro Max will be an improvement no matter what. But yeah, other than that there's nothing that makes me excited about the new phones.

I think the designs are fine on their own but a tremendous number of the decisions look completely ridiculous.

The biggest thing to me is the inconsistency with Apple and lack of long term planning or thinking through decisions before they make them. It really feels like there is so little alignment at a high product level.

1. The move from Titanium to Aluminum feels like a difficult sell to me. Titanium has a significantly more premium feel and cooling aside is much more resistant to damage from drops. I never had cooling issues with my 15 or 16. I am a pro user... I play graphically intense games, use my phone 6+ hours per day. I don't know what they're on about.

2. You have the Apple Watch Ultra and Series 11 premium version which are both Titanium. The new phones do not in anyway match the watches stylistically. You have a cheap looking recycled aluminum phone and a premium looking titanium on Apple watches with different finishes across the board. On top of that, the watches have barely improved or changed in the last several years. Particularly the Ultra line.

3. FineWoven wallets were the worst material known to man and still available! They look awful when paired with TechWoven cases. The contrast is jarring. Jury is still out on if TechWoven improves at all but why not offer some sort of vegan leather option. My Tesla vegan leather seats have withstood my ass for nearly 5 years surely there is some well understood vegan option for these products that doesn't totally suck. If you look at the videos the contrast is like nails on a chalkboard.

4. You have the most polarizing color choices on what is supposed to be a broadly appealing mass market phone. You have zero neutral color choices outside of silver which still is two-tone white / silver which makes matching it to wallets and cases more challenging even if it's neutral! Surely a company with the resources of Apple can make a phone that has 4-5 color choices and include at least two neutral options so people can choose. The wallets and cases look like **** on the orange phone and navy phone outside of the orange case and wallet.

I love upgrading every year or two but in my head this is what the iPhone 17 pro line looks like to me. I want to find a reason to upgrade, but right now I just can't justify it.

I am starting to agree with Gruber. Something's rotten at Apple and it goes beyond the software issues. This is the first time in my life where I am genuinely concerned what is happening there. The new phones are a symptom of a much bigger problem. Not only can they not ship new products they're barely iterating and the iteration is quite frankly bad. They gave up on the car. The Vision Pro is an overpriced joke. The new phones have many questionable choices. It might be time for a leadership change.
