I really don't understand why no one can grasp the concept of a subsidized phone. It's not difficult to understand.
You sign a contract for a set number of years.
The carrier discounts your phone and because they will earn it back over the set time.
After the set time, you can get another subsidy.
I have a 3G phone. I cannot upgrade at the subsidized price. I may hate AT&T, but its not because of this.

Wait until some other phone company offers a phone superior than the iphone and then we will see who changes the terms of their contract to attract customers 🙂
You really don't get it. I know I'm in a contract. I know people who have finished their contract or have never been in one get a better price. I don't have a friggin' problem with that, so you are talking to the wrong person. I only am trying to figure out why people who bought the 3G last July at the same time I did it are getting quoted different prices and different upgrade times, when we should be on a level playing field by virtue of when we bought the damn phone. Try to figure out who you're actually responding to.

I just don't understand why people are getting so bent our of shape for a practice that has been the way cell phone subsidies have worked for long before the Iphone came out. I am all for criticizing AT&T on the Tethering and MMS fiasco. Or the fact that there is no 3G in my area. But if a person makes a deal they should follow it. 3G owners made a deal that got them a cheaper up front price.
Ya.. figure out who I'm responding to.... please. Yes.. there is a fiasco about when you can "upgrade" depending on who you ask.. Apple or AT&T. I'm not sure of your situation, but if you bought your phone in July... I'm guessing you have a year left on your contract. The general norm (at least on this site) is that you can upgrade at the subsidized price at 18months. That makes it around december/January for you... Since Apple/AT&T are not on the same page with this, I'm not certain which one is the reliable source.
I'm on the side of business. AT&T is screwing you with MMS... they are not screwing you from your 2 year contract.
Yes.. they are... for NORMAL phones.. but we've seen that they take differently with the iPhone.. since our new "tethering" plan may cost $40/month extra rather than the $30 they charge for other phones
If I remember right, most Iphone plans are over $100. I thought the "normal" plan was around $100-$110. With only one plan being cheaper at $65. So most of those 3G customers would be eligible for the upgrade in July.
No, next April for me, whereas it's much earlier for most people in the same boat. Go figure. Please, somebody, go figure.

So revolt. Buy the 3G S unsubsidized and use it on another carrier. You do have the option of buying these phones unsubsidized, at least most of the time. And then you aren't tied to a company like AT&T.
uh, so....is anyone able to explain why I can't have my two phones for my family plan delivered? the site keeps telling me I have to drive 90 miles to Atlanta to pick it up in store, and then that a reservation "does not guarantee availability".

When Did you buy it? I will assume July at this point.
What plan do you have? I am going to assume the lowest ($69.99 I think) at this point.
So if we use the guidelines that we have:
No upgrade fee if-
Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing at least $68.99 a month but no more than $98.99 a month, and who has been in contract (and not had a phone upgrade) for 21 months or more
24-21=3 months
So July ->June->May->April - so- April is 3 months before july.
April 2010 is 21 months into your contract and when you are eligible for an upgrade without fees.
True. But if AT&T isn't able to extend its soon to be expiring exclusivity with Apple, it obviously made a mistake.
Lots of people whining and complaining helps send the message to Apple that many of their customers do not want to deal with AT&T anymore.

Here's my thing...
I want this phone. Right now I have a Verizon phone that sucks because it is two years old.
The question is: how much will the plan for this phone cost? 39.99 + 30.00 data + 20.00 text? Or are they changing the price of the plan?
If not I don't know I might get the Palm Pre just because the unlimited plan is 69.99

Paying about $100 for the plan is ridiculous and is what's keeping a lot of people away. That's why I don't have an iPhone pretty much. The upfront part price on the phone doesn't matter to much in the long run. Plus, no one seems to want to deal with AT&T, which needs to be able to handle MMS and data Tethering on the iPhone. I realize that would put a lot of strain on the network, but they need to get this resolved quick. Hopefully they will.
As far as buying the phone is concerned, this is standard protocol. You're still paying for the phone pretty much. That's what you're doing. That's why there is a charge.
