..."Sucker! -- you thought that AT&T would/could provide bandwidth to support any of this? HA! If you are in Midtown NYC, you can't even get a normal phone call, much less send a text e-mail. 'More bars in more places' is just marketing BS for 'It would work if you were somewhere else -- we promise!. No, seriously.'"

MMS on the iPhone. Gimme a break.

I'm in midtown manhattan and always have full bars of 3g. Never drop a call unless I go down into the subway. So you might want to get your phone checked out.

So who's getting one and who's passing on it?

I'm a 3G owner passing on this. They're charging me $699 for a 32GB to upgrade and there's no way I can afford that much for a phone. You guys?

PASS.

Wow the amount of complaing about early upgrading is ridiculous. Has no one here ever owned a phone before? Ever?

Seriously you knew this going in owning the 3g. Same thing happened to 1st gen owners.

Also doesn't hurt to read that contract you signed.

I'm a 1st Gen user, love my phone... already pre-ordered the 3G S. I'm an every two kind of person. I waited on the 3G because the only difference between 2G and 3G was GPS and 3G. Here we have a "noticeable" (not proven yet) speed increase and 3G/GPS and video.

Frankly.. as a side note. These phones are f**** super durable. I've dropped this phone from about 5 feet on pavement about 15-20 times in 2 years. It still works perfectly, albeit very banged up.

I guess AT&T doesn't like me. I have paid a couple of my bills late, it's true (but not habitually). Is that really why I'm getting this message?:

"We can offer you an iPhone at the full retail price. On 04/03/2010, you may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade.
$499.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
$599.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
$699.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)"

This message I got is also missing the "As a valued AT&T customer..." preamble. So obviously I'm not a valued customer.

The thing is, I didn't know I wasn't an unvalued customer until today. Just imagine if I had never gone onto the Apple Store site to see how much an upgrade would cost me, and when I could qualify for a discount, and never known that other people who bought at the same time as me can get a new iPhone for $200 less than I can right now, and get one for even less than that months before I can. If I hadn't checked this out, I would have gone on in blissful ignorance, thinking that AT&T valued me as a customer. Thank God I found out the truth, so I don't go on living in denial that they love me.

Seriously... does AT&T really mean to separate its customers into wheat and chaff like this?

Until today, I loved Apple and even liked AT&T--defended them against all the crap others say. As of today, they have an unvalued and enraged customer.

It's because AT&T has to buy an insurance policy on YOU in case you default on your payments. Hahaha! :D

(FYI: I have been with AT&T since 1999, same phone number, and I have never missed nor had a late payment. I'm not sure if they go back that far or care, but they may care if you were already an AT&T customer before you got your iPhone.)
Honestly, I think making payments on time may be the smoking gun here.

This is absolute bullcrap. That Post article nailed it. Everyone already hates At&T and wants to jump ship as soon as possible when the iphone becomes available on a different network, so how wise is it for them to screw this giant customer base Apple hand delivered them?

this will come back to bite not just At&t on the ass, but Apple also. They can try and spin it all they want but there will not be an en masse upgrade to the new models at these prices. Apple will get stuck with inventory and have no one to blame but themselves for sitcking with At&t. Hopefully as a result it will only hasten Apples' move to allow the iphone sold through other carriers.

If you are so dissatisfied with Apple and AT&T then why do you still have an iPhone? Why don't you get rid of your iPhone and go get a cute little RAZR from Tmobile ?

3gs

I disagree... it's already happening.. the damn site is slower than **** and people on this site are already reserving their phones including me. Most 1st Gen users will upgrade, since it is a significant upgrade for us.

While I hate to admit that I was defending AT&T before WWDC, they have seriously pissed me off, but I am not waiting to upgrade. If the damn phone goes to another carrier next year.. I will eat my ETF and move to another carrier.

Yea I'm thinking the same. For 2010 new iPhone or more option on carrier I will also take a hit on ETF and move on.

Being that I've been registered here since 2002, I'm an elder statesman compared to most of you 'newbies' - so please exercise respect if you wanna flame what I'm about to say

My thoughts -

Yes, AT&T is a business that is more than allowed to decide their own policies, stick to contracts, etc...

...that said (and I say this as a businessman, myself), I think it is pretty pathetic that current 3G iPhone users are not being offered better rates to upgrade

Yeah, yeah... now the AT&T fanboys will flame me and tell me and others to suck it up.... however, there are rewards that should come with being loyal --- yes, AT&T can do whatever they want, but I just wish they would create more loyalty to its past customers - that's my only wish - it's not dramqueening, it's simply a desire that my phone company would treat me better as a customer who has been signed up with them for about 2 years now - clearly they don't want to do that and such an action will be remembered if the iPhone is 'ever' offered outside of AT&T

That said - I'm sick of signing contracts - I might just pay $700 for an iPhone and never have to worry about a contract

peace and love all!

Because people put up a negative when the reality does not live up to the rumor. It's just the way people are.

Because some of us don't believe in spending 700 dollars for a cell phone.

Either way AT&T and Apple will bend you over. You end up eating the subsidy somewhere.

Umm.. and this is the problem. Because everyone else does it (in the US) it is ok and we should be happy?

No, but making AT&T sound like the sole evil corporation isn't exactly the right way to go about things.

Yes.. they are... for NORMAL phones.. but we've seen that they take differently with the iPhone.. since our new "tethering" plan may cost $40/month extra rather than the $30 they charge for other phones

The tethering plan is rumored to cost $70. The current tethering plan costs $65. The significant burden upon the network and the network upgrade would factor into a higher cost if the $70 tethering plan does happen. More likely than not, it would cost $65, same as for all other AT&T smartphones. But then everyone will complain about how slow the network is due to everyone hogging bandwidth. Great. You people are never happy, are you.

As for SMS/MMS, the iPhone uses standard AT&T plans for services currently offered. As thus, it will use the same messaging plan that includes MMS.

Because some of us don't believe in spending 700 dollars for a cell phone.

Well, when the carrier is eating some of the cost so you don't have to spend $700 for a phone, why should you expect them to eat the costs again a year later when you have a 2 year agreement?

Like you I am not surprised about the early upgrade price.

However you are wrong that the same thing happened to 1st gen owners. there was no contract on the original iPhone, so anyone who bought an original iPhone was able to upgrade to a 3G at the subsidized pricing.

help plz !

I didn't get it..
i can buy the new iphone 3GS without a commitment to AT&T ?!..
just pay the full price?!.. sim free?!..
i hope u know what i mean:rolleyes:

Thanks for the heads up on that. I have a relative that works for AT&T. I'll ask her if that's possible.

I am a happy 3G owner from (3g launch) in the Dallas area (near the mothership, great 3G here)

I called AT&T (611) today to check on when I could get the $299 price for the 32Gb. The guy on the phone said the computer told him I could get it 12/12/09.....................JawDrop

But he also said that since this announcement is so new that this date is a worst case scenario and he told me to wait a few days for more news from AT&T on how they will be handling current 3G owners.

He also noticed that I had already received an upgrade on 7/11/08. This also happens to be the same day I started my AT&T contract. When I was buying my Iphone 3G on 7/11/08 the guy ran my contract and had me all ready to go and rang me up and right as I was about to swipe my card I noticed the price was $100 too cheap. The goofball had mistakenly picked up a 8GB instead of the 16GB I had asked for. There was an hour long nightmare of the whole store trying to figure out how to let me walk out with a 16GB 3G.

So today, AT&T dude opened up a case (or something like that) for AT&T to look into and remedy the problem. He said AT&T would be calling me in a few days. The guy said he could not make any promises, but most likely this would push the date to "much much earlier" than 12/12/09 for upgrade to 3G S.

I am crossing my fingers. I really want the better camera 32GB and the voice activation looks really cool.

I will probably keep my current 3G to swap the sim in for when I am in high risk locations like the lake, concerts, the beach etc.......

is ANYONE at all surprised by any of this? Just go to the store next week and sort it out. Obviously buying online is not working. So either call and wait on hold for an hour or just go to the store when its available and sort it out.

Apple is shaking their heads at AT&T now...

Right because Apple's super-secret mentality has nothing to do with this.
AT&T's folks are very likely not briefed in advance because Apple tells a very small number of folks at AT&T what some of the dates are and that they can't tell anyone in their company about them. ( that way can have "surprise" events ).

But yeah concur that folks instantly asked after the announcement.... WTF doesn't go from ultra secret to 1,000s of employees country wide fully briefed in 25 minutes .... they were suppose to interrupt their whole work day just for this?

Chuckle some Apple stores got side swiped with what to do with folks requesting refunds/credits when machines recently bought got toasted. First 24 hours is always looney when don't educate the employees in advance.

Here is the deal. I can upgrade to the 3Gs in 3/12/2010. But by that time why would I, if the iphone 4G would be introduced and sold in the market June 2010? Why not give existing 3G owners the same price as the new customers who sign a two year contract and purchase the iphone for $199? I am tired of hearing the same two arguments:

1. That its a contract we signed for two years and we should have known better

2. that the iphone is subsidized.

Note that none of the pictures prominently display AT&T next to the 3G logo in the pictures. Steve Jobs, like in the old days, is looking for a better deal.

looks like the iphone goes to 80+ countries, in which 79+ dont have at&t. act like you know what you are talking about...

There is some bad blood with Apple with AT&T. AT&T doesn't look like they will survive when it is time to renew the contract.

Exactly why the phone needs to be open. If Verizon started carrying it, there'd be at least some competition in the U.S. for AT&T to step up their game.

And I'm tired of hearing people whining about demanding AT&T to bend to their desires, as far removed from reality those desires are. There's no rule saying you HAVE to upgrade to the 3G S, you realize, right? If you want to upgrade, but you don't think the price is worth it, then it's not worth upgrading to you. It's as simple as that. There's no one forcing you to upgrade.

Again, even Verizon were the one with exclusivity instead of AT&T, the same situation would be occurring. Even if AT&T lost exclusivity, I doubt the situation would change because whatever other carrier offers the iPhone will do the same when the newer model comes out. This is the reality of the American Cellular Phone Industry. You have a problem with it? Tell the government. You want cheap phones? Because it's that mentality that got you into this situation in the first place. AT&T doesn't exist to please you. Neither does Apple. No for-profit company does.

Shame there is no UK price yet, they are still showing the old PAYG price for the 8GB model. That can't be right can it?
Unfortunately it could be. There's no absolute connection between a price/margin reduction AT&T and Apple have agreed in the US on the iPhone 3G, and the deal that O2 and Apple have in the UK. When the UK Apple store came back up after the keynote, the price for the 3G was (and is) still shown as £342.50. It would be great if there was just a delay on showing whatever lower price they've negotiated, but the reduction could just be a big fat zero. There are a few other manufacturers that could exploit this in the UK - Nokia with the N97, Palm with the Pre, Samsung with the Tocco Ultra, LG with the Viewty 2. Personally none of those float my boat, but there will be people who wanted even a slight reduction on the iPhone and if it doesn't appear between now and end of June, will just buy one of the alternatives. It's a shame.

Ive been a very happy 3G owner for one year, but when I saw the announcement this morning, I IMMEDIATELY posted my phone on CL. Within one hour, I got $400 for it. I then went to Apple.com and they offered me the 16gig for $499!! So I jumped on it. Bought the Applecare and $10 shipping as well. Probably not the BEST phone out there, however I just *@&^ing love Apple and Ill buy only THEIR sh*%

and here's my question. How long till you think we can have the 3GS jailbroken?

I don't think people are annoyed at having pay an upgrade fee...

I think they're annoyed at paying THAT much.

At least in the US you're getting the option to upgrade on your current contract. O2 in the UK haven't mentioned a thing about current 3G owners being able to upgrade. All they say on the website is 'Already got an iPhone? Download the new software on June 17.'

As it happens I don't think the extra memory, video, compass and voice control are worth shelling out more money if you've already got a 3G. Not with all the new features of the 3.0 software available for free. I'll wait another year till the contract runs out or a reasonable upgrade cost is given.

Now if the TomTom app only worked on the new 3GS, then it would be a different story...
