AT&T to take earnings hit from iPhone subsidies

AT&T warns of earnings hit from iPhone subsidies; to pay off in 2010

NEW YORK (AP) -- AT&T Inc. says its profits will take an estimated $600 million hit because of the iPhone's new lower price.

AT&T, which is the iPhone's exclusive U.S. carrier, confirmed it's subsidizing Apple Inc.'s latest multimedia gadget, which goes on sale July 11 for $199. AT&T put the cost at 10 cents to 12 cents per share, or roughly $600 million.

AT&T expects to the new iPhone to add to revenue in 2010 since no further "revenue sharing" will be required. That points to Apple and AT&T dissolving a rumored arrangement whereby AT&T paid Apple a share of the service fees paid by iPhone users.

The dissolution of that deal means Apple is switching to the business model used by other handset makers, whereby carriers subsidize the retail price of the phones in exchange for a two-year contract.

They were updated at the end of February

End of February was not much of an update, but WWDC is not "normally" targeted for computer updates. That is reserved for MacWorld, special events and quiet (less significant) updates.

from webpage:
Find yourself.
iPhone 3G finds your location via GPS or by triangulating your position using Wi-Fi and cellular towers. It also finds points of interest by keyword: Search for “coffee” and iPhone shows you every cafe nearby

So it has a GPS chip...

"finds your location via GPS or by triangulating your position"

A-GPS isn't simply triangulation, it's rather more complex. It uses a remote server to download the ephemeris data at a much faster data rate than it comes from the satellite and is also capable of offloading the positional calculations to make the lock faster.

I was dissapointed but still glad it finally came. Can we pre-order right now? I don't think the apple store for the iPhone is up yet. :(

And when will the video stream go online?

You lot absolutely crack me up.

It is so obvious that the $199 price is the subsidized price - do you really think that they could sell the new iphone for $199 and make money without there being a network subsidy. $199 is nothing after distribution costs etc.

The phone will be available 'offline' of course- if anything for people who break/lose theirs - and the price will be like $599 for the same product.

Apple have overnight destroyed the 'unlocking' market by forcing any offline buyers to pay a premium that effectively negates the point of buying offline in the first place.

Very clever.

Some people actually think that the $199 is NOT subsidized and will be FREE with a contract - cracks me up.... :p

I'm disappointed it does not have the front facing camera for iChat. :(

Upgrade to the current camera???
32 GB version?

I expected more. This was by far the most boring keynote I've sat through.
I guess we are spoiled with the iPhone and now execpt something great everytime Steve announces new products. Stock dropped $7...

I think that all of us did.....Although I do have 3G coverage I really dont see how much is that going to make any difference to me...and I can bet 1/3 of those people who have been screaming 3G either dont have coverage or not going to use it that much since it is going to drain their battery faster.

That would be a paperclip:

LOL LEAVE IT TO APPLE TO REINVENT THE PAPERCLIP.

OH WAIT A MINUTE...AFTER THIS MAJOR FLOP/DISAPPOINTMENT TODAY I'M GIVING THEM TOO MUCH CREDIT!!!

oops, my bad. i meant "other" smartphones in general, not just rim's bb...

the flexibility in the iPhone seems to trump the others pretty quickly tho -- the way i see it, existing contracts and existing technology will keep the others afloat for a while, but the iPhone is aggressively moving from a "consumer-toy" to successful business tool...we'll see...

flexibility and iphone in the same sentence? thats a new one.
the iphone excels as a media player and web browser and thats it.

i dont really want to go on about where it is trumped.

they ussually start orders right away. this is not the way they ussually roll out a product, its always available within hours at least for ordering.

very suspicious not to mention disappointing.

going to stay with Verizon and wait for a phone that has some balls to it

UK pricing

Yes it would, but I have a sinking feeling that we'll be paying £199. That's the Apple way.

The UK has always priced goods at $= UKP. That's why it's called Treasure Island by vendors.....Not just Apple. Maybe the 240V plugs are expensive? :D

Increased distribution channels now?

Because they're subsidizing the cost does this mean I can finally buy an iPhone from Amazon.com?

I dont know why people are making such a big deal about no camera improvement. If someone enjoys taking pictures that much, they usually have a quality digital camera. Especially with the small sizes and cheaper prices. Why limit yourself to the iphone's small camera. The iPhone is wonderful, I love mine, but its not going to have EVERYTHING in it. Good work apple, I'll see you on July 11th.

Because when you benchmark against the rest of the industry it is poor, just look at the likes of Sony Ericsson and Nokia, my old SE K800i had a 3mpx camera and that was 2 years ago. My current Nokia is 5mpx with xexon flash and it is handy having a half decent camera on you - going to the iphone's 2mpx camera would be a major downgrade for me.

I realize that some people don't use the phone camera's much but it's something that is quite important to a lot of people when getting a phone these days.

I didn't expect apple to go the whole way but I least expected 3mpx with photo assist light.

Lack of MMS support is just ridiculous these days, do apple even look at what their competitors are doing (and have been doing for a long time). Nokia, SE, Samsung, et all are miles ahead in some of the even basic phone functionality.

This will sell bucket-loads, and I do think it's a great phone (I love the interface), but it just don't cut the mustard for me... yet.

I wish it had the front facing video camera or video conferencing

It appears to have only a 2M camera and doesn't seem to have a video camera of any sort (front or rear facing). One of the great things about 3g phones is the ability to video call. Do we know if it has voice activated dialing?

I must admit to be being slightly ... disappointed.

It looks like iPhone 2.0 could just be iPhone 1.0 with 3g and GPS, but not with the various features that would make it on par with my Nokia.

Am I wrong?

Who cares about the casing, I am glad they didn't waste money on the casing. Most of us will be buying a protective case anyway, so there's no point spending money on improving the back of the iPhone.
