Looking forward to the new iPhone, disappointed there was no iChat camera or a 32Gb option for those who want it, but you can't complain for the price which is now very attractive. I just hope it doesn't get unfairly inflated for the UK...

Massively disappointed they didn't bump the resolution of the existing camera which can't have impacted the price that much surely? I smell a list of intentionally built in future upgrades for Christmas purchases...

RE: unlocked phones....

keep this in mind. if the iPhone is to be released in 60+ countries... it becomes a logistical nightmare for apple to keep service phones / parts etc. iPods currently come in a few flavours - a US version, a UK/Europe, Asia, and Australian SKUs...

60 countries with 3 different phones (8GB, 16GB, 16GB white), all branded differently / locked to diff networks, etc. Add into this multiple carriers in some countries, you're looking at 200+ individual iPhone SKU's all over the world.

What makes sense is to sell the iPhone as US version (locked to ATT), and then a UK phone, a euro phone, an asian version and a Oceania version. All unlocked, sold unlocked at retail stores / partner stores, and signing a contract thru iTunes or in the shop gets you your rebate price.

It appears to have only a 2M camera and doesn't seem to have a video camera of any sort (front or rear facing). One of the great things about 3g phones is the ability to video call. Do we know if it has voice activated dialing?

I must admit to be being slightly ... disappointed.

It looks like iPhone 2.0 could just be iPhone 1.0 with 3g and GPS, but not with the various features that would make it on par with my Nokia.

Am I wrong?

you're totally right. LOL i was considering getting an iphone over the new nokia n96 but...not anymore i guess.

It is curious that they don't mention it being available online. It only says find a store near you where it will be sold.

Personally, I don't care about waiting in line (I've already got an iPhone and I did it last year), so I'd prefer to just order it online. I can wait another week or two for it to deliver since I'll be able to play with 2.0 software, etc.

Since they make no mention of it right now, I assume they will make them available for order at the time they go on sale in the store.

While I'm envious a little, I'll be keeping my 16gig iPhone. I wouldn't use the GPS, got a tom tom and yes the 3G would apparently be awe - wait for it - some. But I like the look of the gen 1 better right now.

To those who keep saying "No 32Gig is a deal breaker" Huh? I've got 600 songs on mine, 5 DVD movies 9 other videos, 150 pix, 300 contacts and I've still got 4.92 gig left. What are you people expecting to put on your phones? Of the 5 DVD movies, I've only watched one of them on the phone. Am I looking for to the App store, you betchya! But those things can't take up that much space, can they?

Why do yo NEED 32gigs? Are you planning to overthrow the planet? Thus creating a social hierarchy based not on gender, or skin color or $$$ but on iPhone gigabites? At the bottom, those with well, no iphone, then the 4 gigers, 8 gigers, 16 gigers and those supreme rulers of all the 32 gigers!

flexibility and iphone in the same sentence? thats a new one.
the iphone excels as a media player and web browser and thats it.

i dont really want to go on about where it is trumped.

really? you don't think ease of use surrounding the SDK is going to make it unlike ANY other device? not a smartass question, just a question...

You lot absolutely crack me up.

It is so obvious that the $199 price is the subsidized price - do you really think that they could sell the new iphone for $199 and make money without there being a network subsidy. $199 is nothing after distribution costs etc.

Why? They cut their margins a bit, ship more models. Lots of 3G phones sell at that pricepoint and lower.

They're going to make a killing on the appstore, and probably even more on the corporate rollout. I don't think they're losing much.

Steve said $199 *everywhere* - that includes countries where subsidy is illegal and carrier locking is illegal.

What time of day July 11th?

6pm like last time, or just at the start of the day? I have a feeling Apple will be jerks and make us wait all day on the 11th :p

The phone will be available 'offline' of course- if anything for people who break/lose theirs - and the price will be like $599 for the same product.

Apple have overnight destroyed the 'unlocking' market by forcing any offline buyers to pay a premium that effectively negates the point of buying offline in the first place.

Very clever.

But why isn't this listed? I can understand Apple not wanting people to unlock but there are still plenty of people out there on AT&T contracts who either don't want to or can't extend their contracts but still want an iPhone....but we don't know the price.

July 11th needs to come soon, hopefully Apple and AT&T will have much more information on how things are supposed to work.

Also, isn't the AT&T vacation drought starting on June 15th for two weeks? How does that work with the July 11th release?

This WWC was as boring as watching paint dry. I almost fell asleep watching the demos, time to get some lunch and hope that this afternoon brings something special. I'm very disappointed that we didn't get any instant gratification. Nothing available until next month. Sure, the 2.0 software has many interesting possibilities, and we all knew about MobileMe, but there is nothing revolutionary about the new iphone, no front camera, no video ichat, no specs, hell, not even a real iphone 2.0 to look at.....

Apple stock is down so others think that as well

Because when you benchmark against the rest of the industry it is poor, just look at the likes of Sony Ericsson and Nokia, my old SE K800i had a 3mpx camera and that was 2 years ago. My current Nokia is 5mpx with xexon flash and it is handy having a half decent camera on you - going to the iphone's 2mpx camera would be a major downgrade for me.

I realize that some people don't use the phone camera's much but it's something that is quite important to a lot of people when getting a phone these days.

I didn't expect apple to go the whole way but I least expected 3mpx with photo assist light.

Lack of MMS support is just ridiculous these days, do apple even look at what their competitors are doing (and have been doing for a long time). Nokia, SE, Samsung, et all are miles ahead in some of the even basic phone functionality.

This will sell bucket-loads, and I do think it's a great phone (I love the interface), but it just don't cut the mustard for me... yet.

Yup I totally agree with you, I guess it is because I only really use the phone's camera for spontaneous picture taking. Don't get me wrong, I would like an improved camera on the phone, but other features like Flash websites, and improved text messaging and the like would seem more important.

purchase locations

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but, immediately following the re-opening of the online Apple store (UK version) the following purchase locations were listed:

Apple Retail Store, Apple online store, o2 retail store, o2 website, Carphone warehouse retail store and Carphone warehouse website.

This seems to now have been trimmed to just the o2 and Carphone warehouse websites. Maybe this will change?....

I am willing to bet if you pre-order online you will get yours after the Apple store has them.

No point really.

Part of me would rather pay 10 bucks and have it overnighted than fight some crowds and lines. We will see though.

Impact Resistant

First Order Of Business For All You Early Adopters:

Invest In A Good Hard Case For Your Phone.

With Plastic, One Drop And It's All Over!!

But With It Being So Cheap You Could Just Go Out And Buy Yourself A New One! Lol

Unfreakinbelievable What Apple Did Today. Just Unfreakinbelievable.

good thing is to me i liked black one a lot better and that is the $199 one..

And also how did you guys watch the keynote as a live video?

Apple is digging themselves a hole...huge price cut every 6 months or so and with memory upgrade.

So what's the point of upgrading your phone when cheaper and better is coming in 6 months?

But alas one could go on forever saying this, wait until the next one, wait until the next one.
Completely pointless argument.

If it's like last years release (which I assume it will be) just show up 2~3 hours after 6:00PM (Launch time) and walk right up. I showed up at around 7:30PM and was out the door 20 minutes later. This was at Tysons Corner which is know to be one of the busiest mac stores in the country.

Some people actually think that the $199 is NOT subsidized and will be FREE with a contract - cracks me up.... :p

In the UK, that's not that unusual. In fact in the rest of the world it's not that unusual

Not that unusual = phones are practically always free with contracts.
Still not a very good show from Apple

Subsidy is not illegal its only the carrier locking....
