Yes, I know that. And you know that. But just imagine how many users are going to click on the SMS application and think: "wow this is just like iChat" and start chatting away. Do this for the month and the watch when the bill arrives. Ouch.[/QUOTE

Ok...if you click on a button that clearly says SMS and think you are NOT using SMS...coupled with all available info, including a guided tour that clearly states its SMS...then you deserve to get popped with a big bill.

Fortunately, you'll be on Cingulatt, so if you explain that you are a moron, they will cut you some slack the first time :)

Gotta love Customer Service. Thank god they have Verizon as competition; they bend over backwards in this Cold War.

An aside:

Can you imagine the dread coming from everyone else with assloads of BAN requests pouring in, lol? :)

So, I have a couple questions. I have Verizon and am going to pay the cancellation fee. I can transfer my old Verizon number over to my new iphone? And when we all go in and buy the iPhone, there won't be any stopping and talking forever activating it there you just pick it up and take it home and activate it at home? And will we be able to track out minutes/texts, etc online for this? Thanks

You should call AT&T at 1-888-333-6651 and tell them you want to buy the iPhone and transfer your Verizon number. They will be able to tell you if you can.But DON'T cancel Verizon until you have activated your iPhone.

Activation takes place through iTunes.

I'd imagine you can check your usage somehow.

And current customers thinking of switching data plans:

Please please please ask about your rollover minutes (I have 2k or so) because if you switch plans, you LOSE them... don't know if the iPhone is an exception. You should be fine if all you do is add the $20 package. Adding lines is fine also. It's just when you muck up with the minutes that the Rollover minutes all disappear. So please ask before changing :)

taxes and fees

does anyone have a guess as to how much taxes and fees will add to these plans? does it vary by state?

I pay $30 a month for 500 mins, unlimited 3G and texts with Sprint. This plus a $600 phone doesn't appeal to me.

Watch out for that "unlimited" 3G, it actually does have limits, such as, you know, downloading files that are too big and they cut you off. And are they still offering that plan, I don't see it anywhere on the Sprint website - where is it?

Is it me or are those prices stupidly high?

It's you. And the rest of europe. Plans are priced differently in different countries, you can't really compare them just by plugging a price into an exchange rate calculator. At this point, nobody has the remotest idea what any of the iPhone pricing will be in other countries to be released later.

So, when some kind of IM client arrives, make sure you get an unlimited messaging plan if you do any IMing over the EDGE network. (you can IM all you want when you are on WIFI)

Kimo

Don't count on the WiFi network eliminating the charges. That may be true, but you'll be using the same crippled iChat/ SMS Messaging application. I could see it going either way. It just like if you're on WiFi and you make a voice call, you will most likely be charged fro the minutes. Obviously these are all using the same data channels (data, voice and SMS through the cell towers). However, when you're on WiFi, the data will move to the WiFi. The voice will stay on the cell channels. The SMS, I don't know. Again, I think this is something to look out for and a reason why every iPlan rolled out has only 200 SMS included.

Wow, 300 texts a day?!? Do you use it for work, or pleasure? I average about 3 a week.

Both. I use it for work a lot, but pleasure about 60% of the time. It just fits my life style to text more than talk.

Well iPhone gen 2 for me now unless ATT still over charges.

And yes I could use some safari app to text and not get raped by ATT, but a lot of times IM applications or what ever end in bad news and rarely work as well as Text messaging in terms of reliability and what not.

Actually, if there was an iChat/AIM client (not through safari), AT&T does count an IM message as an SMS message. How they do it, I don't know, but they do. I have an HTC TyTN (WM5) with AIM/MSN/etc, and was very close one month on going over my available SMS messages, but I never sent any SMS's, just IM's. This confused me, as I had unlimited data, but there is some wordage on AT&T's site that indicates that IM's count as SMS's. So, when some kind of IM client arrives, make sure you get an unlimited messaging plan if you do any IMing over the EDGE network. (you can IM all you want when you are on WIFI)

You are doing something wrong. I have a Blackberry and use an app called Jive Talk (PLEEEEASE make this for the iPhone) and it basically aggregates AIM, Yahoo Msngr, Gtalk, ICQ and MSN IM clients into ONE screen. I can IM with anyone on any of those IM clients from one screen of my Blackberry. I helped beta test this app and then bought it because it is amazing.

I AM NOT getting charged SMS rates for IM.

You may want to check if you are having to adjust settings such as WAP for the IM client you are using. I know if you setup Twitter wrong it will use SMS and that can be bad.

Nights & Weekends & M2M (mobile to mobile): Free for both.
Regular: BOTH people "pay" (use up minutes). I was surprised to learn that this is different in Europe (all incoming is free I believe?). There's a company out there with free incoming, I forget which (Verizon?).
Sprint has free incomming.

I have a cingular (AT&T now) family plan. 4 lines, unlimited nights / weekends / cell-to-cell. 750 shared minutes with rollover (we have over 5700 rollover minutes accumulated :p )

After taxes and fees, my bill is $120. To add another line would be $9.99 more, so $130.

As it stands now, if I get an iPhone, and the rest of my family doesn't, it will come to $140.

/Hope that helps

If you look at the table, you'll notice that there are two other tabs.

I was worried at first that it would be $29.99 for the extra iPhone line PLUS $20 for the data plan, but I read it wrong. The $29.99 is all encompassing. I don't know if this is a great deal (as I've never had a data plan before), but it is DEFINITELY much better than I was expecting.
I'm trying to make sense of the rate plans in terms upgrading our existing plan.

We currently have the FamilyTalk Nation 450 plan, with 2 lines (voice only), for which we pay $59.99 per month.

Now suppose that we want to buy two iPhones and upgrade our plan accordingly. If I look at the "Existing Customers" tab on the iPhone Rates Plan page, it sorta sounds like I could just tack on another $20 total and we're in business, for both lines. And that would be pretty swell. That would make our monthly bill $79.99.

But when I look at the "Family" plans (for new subscribers), it looks like the cheapest option is the $80 basic plan plus $29.99 for the additional line, for a total of $109.99 per month. Which is not quite as swell as the other interpretation.

How do you guys read this?
Maybe this is a dumb question, but I have a Sprint family plan and we're paying $115/mo for 800 minutes total shared between 5 phones. (No data, no text) Just voice.

How much would it cost for an AT&T family plan of 5 phones, where at least 1 is an iPhone? I want to know how much more my family would need to spend to get an iPhone. Thanks a lot!

By the way, these iPhone plans are a bit cheaper than I expected, which is why I ask.
I see it just like Sprint without the free 2nd line. Think of adding the iPhone as adding 20.00 data and 9.95 for the line (cause that is what it is). If you already have the line then just add 20.00 for the data for each iphone and you are good to go.

@pocketrockets going from sprint to AT&T will be more expensive (I have the family plan with 700 or 750 minutes(I don't remember) 69.99 w/ 1 free line). As you would have to add 10.00 to your existing plan (assuming your plan cost the same as mine) then add the other 4 lines (cause you don't get the freebie line with AT&T, so 80.00 + 9.99*4).

Why do you insist on trolling every iPhone thread with this worthless drivel? The OVERWHELMING majority of the people here think these plans are awesome. Why don't you go write about how stupid we all are on your blog instead of lowering yourself to posting here with us uninformed terrible excuse for consumers?

dude, what is the point of a forum if everyone shares the exact same opinion? So what if he has a difference of opinion? Don't label him as a troll.

In my opinion, having to pay 500 dollars ON TOP OF the monthly fee seems a bit over excessive, and I don't understand how everyone can think the deal is that great. But hey, if you have the money you have the money...it looks like a damn fine product.

If the iPhone does not have a good IM solution such as Jive Talk or something like Blackberry Messenger, which is the main way I talk to my gf during the day, in six months then my iPhone will be for sale.

There is NO reason I should have a cutting edge technology phone that does not provide a good IM solution. I will give them about 6 months to add it as I am confident a lot of cool apps are going to be coming our way!

Yeah, the more I read, I think you're right. So that would presumably bump us up from $60 per month to $100 per month. Grumble grumble.

I wonder if it's time yet for us to just dump our land line phones to make up the difference. ;)

Data and text plans are always added per line and not per plan, so it would be $40 to add the iPhone plan to both of your lines. So, you're looking at $100 for your current plan with 450 minutes or $110 for a new plan with 700 minutes. Not much savings to stay with your old plan.

I've asked this question on another forum, but this may be more clearly answered now that the rate plans have been divulged.

Ok, so I know that people are saying that you can't order the iPhone through the corporate B2B channels (i.e. CRU's), for now...

But, let's say I were to purchase the iPhone myself, say on my Corporate card.

Then, when I go to activate the iPhone, I put in my phone number, account number, etc. and then activate the "iPhone Data Plan". Would it not just 'work' ?

Any other corporate account holders have this issue & wondering how they can get their mitts on the iPhone as well?

I am wondering the same thing. I have found the answer nowhere. I would be happy taking my number off my corporation's plan and just expensing a personal AT&T account, but would much rather just get the phone on Friday and put in company's account information in iTunes and have it work!!!

Ahh, cool. I assume that those Family plans include the first and second line. That's a good deal for 2 iphones.

Thanks for the response. I need to see if we've ever actually used up our pool of 450 minutes; I'm guessing not. Of course if we did actually ditch our landline phone that lead to needing more minutes.

Sigh. A lot to think about.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I can use the unlimited internet on the iPhone to use http://www.iloveim.com/ and contact anyone on Yahoo, AOL, MSN, and GoogleTalk UNLIMITED and FOR FREE right?

I don't know I never really got into SMS. What does that have that web-based yahoo doesn't?

pdf

I wonder what will happen if you try to print from a site with a print function. Would be nice if you can create your own PDF. Say you want directions from google to a location. Are you going to leave your phone on that page all the way to your location? Would be nice to save the directions somehow so all you do is read the driving directions and not have to keep it on that page. Also nice to pdf directions to someone from the phone.

I guess I will have to try this all out.

iLounge has a good chart on comparing costs. When you look at the cost over 24 months, it's pretty expensive - but note the cost of the phone itself becomes less important, and the difference between the $500 and $600 phone is no more than $5 per month over the 24 months of a 2 year contract.(He he;) whaddaya think, will this logic go over with the little woman?)
