I wonder how much of a drop in price there will be for the previous generation iMacs on Amazon once these new ones arrive.

Yup. Get in line on the MacPro. I'd even be fine with a smaller tower so long as there are 2 pci-e slots and 4 hdd slots. For creative professionals it just makes sense too, given that we can then pair a 10 bit monitor.

I'm not due for an upgrade till probably late 2014, so maybe Apple will update their Pro line before then?

The iMac is a mixed bag.

And no more putting suction cups and pulling the screen off and doing repairs yourself? That thing looks so thin I will be afraid to open it.

So we have to add Applecare as a must when you buy this iMac.

Okay, my next Mac is going to to be the Mac Pro when it releases on 2013. I am done with these super thin things.

Need some heft and space to go in there and put stuff I want and not order a monolithic piece of hardware thats more like an appliance than a user serviceable/upgradeable computer.

Thats my personal thought.

Of course, others are going to love the wallpaper that is also a computer on their desks :)

Ironically, I skipped lunch to watch this live and had to do with an Apple(Fuji) or two.

Firewire

As an owner of 4 or 5 firewire drives, I'm a bit frustrated. I can appreciate thunderbolt and all that new usb 3.0 wizardary, but if you're going to keep it in MacBook Pro's, why remove it from the iMac when you've got so much space for it.

Ditto to what everyone is saying about benefits of a thinner screen that you rarely look at from the side too. If it can be done without any disadvantages then I'm all for it but losing the optical drive? Bastards!

Unfortunately I know I'll end up getting one in a few years time by which time I'll have been fully conditioned to only buy non-physical media. As I said; Bastards.

I am slowly coming to the conclusion that having a 5400 rpm drive in the 21.5" is not that big of a deal. It's almost as good at the 7200 if you consider things like platter density etc etc.
Most users will not even notice for day to day tasks. But the bigger 1Tb size is welcome on the base model.

It's one sexy machine. Not enough (right now) to get me to upgrade. But maybe next gen.

This might be like the Macbook Air. It may take a generation to get the specs right...

I would have jumped if it was just plain old SSD, instead of a fusion drive. I'm not sure what I want to do yet.

Wish this desktop computer actually had desktop components. Also not really an all in one anymore since it needs an external drive sitting next to it. I'm all for no optical drive in portables but what is the idea behind no optical drive in a desktop?

Most users will not even notice for day to day tasks. But the bigger 1Tb size is welcome on the base model.

They'll notice if they do photography or video. I sure as heck to want OS X to put the files one the slow as molasses HDD while I work on them (I've been down that road). I'd rather have them on the SSD.

Oh WOW.
Oh Whoopee.
Be still my pounding heart.

A thinner desktop machine that is only viewed from the front with the thickness invisible and completely irrelevant.

A thinner desktop machine without the essential optical drive that is still a necessary component. Didn't Apple notice Bluray happening?

Oh WOW.
Oh Whoopee.
Be still my pounding heart. I am ecstatic...

Bring back Steve. Apple has lost its way again.

I hate to tell you, but Bluray is a dying technology, too. Physical media is on the way out. Just ask Amazon, iTunes, etc.

A quick scan of that graphics card and it seems to be worse than the previous model. Nah, definitely going to take extra care of my current model now.

You need a more powerful card to run that 2560x1440 display, not a weaker one.

My desktop doesn't need or want to be impossibly thin.

Why make it so thin? Do I sit it sideway now so I can enjoy how thin it is? I get some people have a small work desk, but what work space actually benefits from a super thin desktop?

flat screen TVs would also fall in this category then. A TV probably sits on the same stand whether it's an LCD or Plasma or LED, regardless of how thin they are, and yet again people wants thinner and thinner TVs.

Nothing wrong with wanting to make the iMac thinner, it looks amazing.

.
Bring back Steve. Apple has lost its way again.

Steve Jobs most likely is the one who green-lighted this design.

Jobs was one of main folks pushing for thinness at all costs. That ODDs are "old". etc. This iMac is the culmination of all the things he pushed for.

Ivy Bridge

Do you what for what? New iMac CPUs are Ivy Bridge. What are you talking about?

Yes -i corrected my post. I was thinking about the i7. The Apple promos seem to only talk about i5 but in the performance section it says
" Or configure iMac with a quad-core Intel Core i7 at up to 3.4GHz. "
No mention of price or timing for this or the Fusion drive

I'm normally a pretty big iMac fan, but I gotta say Apple Design and Apple Economics weren't on the same page here. 5400 RPM? embarrassing...

What I like to know from the optical drive users is why they are still using them? You can download everything you need from the web, and with fast internet connections it doesn't take hours anymore either.

The timing for losing the optical drive is about right. Get with the times.

but if you're going to keep it in MacBook Pro's
FireWire isn't being "kept" in MacBook Pros.

It's rather old and inexpensive MacBook Pros that are being kept in the lineup for the cheapskates and people who can't let go of obsolete err... I mean deprecated tech (FW, DVD, etc.). (sarcasm intended)

As an owner of 4 or 5 firewire drives, I'm a bit frustrated. I can appreciate thunderbolt
Don't you appreciate Thunderbolt for providing access to fast Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-800-adapters, so you can continue putting your valued external drives to good use? ;)

You may be correct, but I doubt it.

I have no confidence in the security or robust failproof nature of Clouds. You may be happy to trust your precious files to a flimsy third party... I am not.

They gotta stop with all the lipstick on these skinny pigs. Put something under the hood worth taking note of and stop with all these diet programs.

The same was said when Apple ditched the floppy. Someone has to move the industry forward, you really think it’s going to be Dell or Acer to ween people off archaic technology?

Again...This has been explained too many times.....It's not the same as the floppy...The floppy was replaced by superior long term storage technology...And no, usb and sdxc cards are not as good as cd/dvd for long term storage...So until they replace the CD/dvd with a better long term storage solution comparisons to the floppy are irrelevant.

I know physical music sales are dropping, but film? Got any figures to back this up with?

It's not running in retina though...

Yes but a lot of the base model users just want a computer to get online (the original intent of the iMac) and won't be heavy into video/photos... it's probably also Apples way of pushing users to the next model, then get the Fusion Drive upgrade.

Epic fail.

It's not a new design, it's just thinner. There's no optical drive, which kills it for me. When I use Windows on Bootcamp it means having to have an external optical drive on my desk to load certain programs or play DVD or BD movies in my collection, thus defeating the purpose of having an all-in-one machine. Another external device to add to my modem, external HDD, speakers, etc.

No optical drive

No new stand design

No retina display

No upgradability

No touch screen

No exterior design change (e.g. same chin)

No difference in available sizes

This is essentially little more than a spec bump with a thinner screen. I don't need a thinner screen. The only possible appealing feature is the 75% less reflective AG coating.

FAIL.
LOL. Touch on OS X? Dream on... Won't ever happen, unless Apple merges OS X with iOS into a new hybrid rather than importing a few apps like now. Apple will never design an OS with Windows 7-like touch features as an afterthought. That would be going BACKWARDS in interface design. Like Microsoft first releasing Windows 8, and then Windows 7. Why do you even want it? OS X with touch would be a horrible experience, not even counting the strain and lacking ergonomics.

And why do you need a new stand?? The most recent AIO design from Dell uses an even worse stand, and that's on a computer obviously ripping off Apple. There are only so many ways of designing a robust stand with a hole in it to let the cable through...

I had kind of hoped for Retina though. I would even have been OK with Retina + transition to 19" vs 24" instead of what's here now. Leave the gigantic 27" option for Cinema Display. 24" is a freaking awesome display size, a great compromise. And many would welcome a slim iMac format like 19".
