just because you don't use the optical drive doesn't mean others don't. I know a number of people that use them for dvd authoring also getting digital copies of films and ripping music/movies of the disc.

I think the big deal is, why remove something in a desktop unit that doesn't need to be light and thin? consumers and professionals that have a ned for the drive are left in the cold now, especially with mac pro's being prohibitively expensive

So you have to buy instead of steal?

I'm keeping my 2011....but

For those that want the "old" 21.5"...Best Buy in the USA still has them as of today.

Geez a rock and a hard spot...Microsoft 8 or this new Hunk of ****

Could this be Apple's VISTA?

Oh I forgot...If I bought this thing, I would need at least another USB Hub! Not enough usb ports as it is!

the statements about why desktops don't need to be thin and what not is complete nonsense.

have you ever wondered why FLATscreen TVs are the only available options these days.

have people stopped using common sense on these forums.

21.5 - no self upgradable ram, base 21.5 no possibility for fussion... 21.5 default 5400rpm disk (WTF)??? and finally, in europe, huge price bump... for me, no way to buy, really dissapointed
The Euro has been doing terribly over the last year or so. Apple doesn't have dynamic prices that reflect currency fluctuations, they set the price according to exchange rates at the time and then the price remains until a new model comes out. And since the last model was unusually old, the price reflected the value of the Euro a loooong ass time ago.

Once again Apple takes an known concept and calls it a breakthrough simply by naming it "Fusion" and putting it in a mainstream product. As usual good marketing by Apple.

Imagine my excitement to find that I too am already using "fusion" technology on my 6 year old iMac server with no display and a Seagate Momentus XT hard drive!

I agree that it is just plain stupid making a desktop device so thin that it has to loose functionality. It will just sit on a desk, who the hell cares?

I am now down to considering a Mac Mini with a nice 24" Ultrasharp monitor, or perhaps even trying a Windows 8 based touch screen systems.

Well, at least the new thinner, lighter design will make it easier to haul it back to the shop for repairs. (just looking on the bright side).
Well if it's built anything like my last one (2011 iMac), it will make many trips to the Apple store to fix stupid things.
If these ship with Hynix RAM, send it back. Went through god knows how many faulty sticks and trips to the Apple store before getting Samsung RAM.
Not a single problem since then.

This new iMac only makes me think hackintoshs will be more appealing....
Less user upgradeable and no optical drive.....
not to mention still very pricey...
Why does apple need to make these changes to a desktop???? If we need something portable we would get laptops!!!

I'm hilarious to believe that the new iMac's glass is held in place in basically the same way as the old one? Or you're hilarious for assuming they've turned it into one big, hermetically sealed piece that not even Apple can open?

I'm going to guess the latter.

Yes, you are funny man.

In current, screen is held by screws, glass is held by magnets.

I doubt in the new imac that the magnets can hold the screen and the glass. If it opened the whole computer would be f'd.

How often do you use the optical drive?

I've used mine 5 times in the last week, it's still MUCH cheaper to buy physical DVD's than it is to watch it on iTunes in the UK. The no optical drive thing is a pain: as people have said before, the point of an all in one is that you shouldn't need a whole lot of other crap on your desk.

The Mac Mini is offering a '1TB Fusion Drive' for $250 over the standard 5400 RPM 1TB HDD. It apparently comes with a 128GB SSD.

You do realize you're asking for figures to back up a claim he didn't make?

Is "Physical media is on the way out. Just ask Amazon, iTunes, etc." not a claim?

----------

Stop spreading misinformation, please; new users will appreciate that.

The top option is MUCH better than the top option in 2011- in fact, the 680M is the fastest mobile GPU right now and considerably better than the 6970M; this is the fact that matters for anyone demanding a better graphics/gaming experience on iMac.

At the time of printing (before the store went back up here) all we knew was the base GPU ;).

Epic fail.

It's not a new design, it's just thinner. There's no optical drive, which kills it for me. When I use Windows on Bootcamp it means having to have an external optical drive on my desk to load certain programs or play DVD or BD movies in my collection, thus defeating the purpose of having an all-in-one machine. Another external device to add to my modem, external HDD, speakers, etc.

No optical drive

No new stand design

No retina display

No upgradability

No touch screen

No exterior design change (e.g. same chin)

No difference in available sizes

This is essentially little more than a spec bump with a thinner screen. I don't need a thinner screen. The only possible appealing feature is the 75% less reflective AG coating.

FAIL.

This new iMac is just less for more...

So bluray is never coming?
Apple doesn't call it Blu-ray. They have special trademarks for tech standards, you know, DVD-R/W is SuperDrive, 802.11n is AirPort Extreme, iEEE 1394 is Firewire... and Blu-ray is known as "Bag of Hurt"(TM).

Right, but why can't those frequent users use an external drive while the rest of us who left optical behind long ago enjoy a much thinner and lighter computer without legacy devices in it that get used once a year at most? The other way around isn't possible, see.

It's not exactly a modular computer, it's an all-in-one, and anything that goes into an all-in-one better damn well be something that the majority uses frequently. Firewire and optical drive are no longer among those things.

If the problem strictly is that it's an all in one... ok, I personally don't buy it. I applaud making the system lighter, but it's only really thin on the edge. I don't know how thick it is at it's thickest point, but I'd imagine it's close to the current iMac.

It's a desktop computer, how often do you look at the back? based on where my iMac currently resides I would probably not notice the thinner profile.

I'd be willing to buy a desktop from Apple, but those pro systems are way beyond the price range of those of us looking at iMac's. I used to own and old G4 powerMac and really loved it, but it was more affordable than current apple desktops

I can't help feeling disappointed. It looks nice, but like many of you, I'm really annoyed by:

-form over function - I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would give a **** about a desktop computer's thickness
-no ODD (I use CDs frequently. I'll cope, but even the principle is bugging me)
-no Firewire ports. Yes, I understand I can buy an adapter, but I use bus-powered devices.

I would definitely buy a 2011 model if it wasn't for long term support (I don't buy computers often), and the better display.
I really wish I could afford waiting for a proper Mac Pro update.

Entry level, for a desktop, graphics are a big damper.
Yeah, entry level... compared to a 2009 Nehalem MP this thing chews it a new ass! Why do you always say such optimistic things man? USB 3 is faster than FW anything, and hybrid drives as options etc. Oh well... I better get a mac pro and be an "power user" then. I know people and myself included who do phenomenal content on a Macbook... why is this "entry level?" Guess you have to go back to school and learn how to utilize resources. Nice machines... I like the USB 3 and I could give a rats #@$ about gaming... go get an xbox.

The previous iMac was flat. It's not like it had a CRT monitor.
