I think this will almost certainly be the best selling Mac of all time, although it's not really going out on a limb to predict that.

Looking forward to putting my hands on one of these in the store.

As others have already noted this is definitely going to be a "mash the buy button first, think later" type of scenerio if you're ordering online and don't want to wait for months. This goes double for those ordering a BTO configuration. Remember, Apple's return policy is generous, so there's literally zero risk to you (heck you can even order one just to test drive if you're bored.)

That said, given all the drama with the 13" M2 MBP, this is definitely going to be one of the more interesting releases. Let's hope Apple has improved the cooling somehow since the M1 MBA and hasn't gimped SSD speed like they did with the 13" MBP...

It is reasonable to expect that the Air will have the exact same SSD situation as the MBP. Why wouldn't it?

So 8CPU/8GPU/8GB/256GB and 8CPU/10GPU/8GB/512GB are the ones listed in the Apple Store. Does that mean that any 16GB RAM is a build-to-order configuration and not deliverable next week?

Never seen such hype for the entry level macs, I’m happy with the 16 m1 max MacBook Pro, 13” is way to small for a computer
I’m almost certain that the MBA is Apple’s most popular Mac. Also, this is the Air’s first honest to goodness redesign (I know there have been tweaks along the way) since, what - damn near the original?

I don’t think the hype is difficult to understand at all.

OMG, look at the memory pricing! I know it's sort of the norm, but doubling the cost of upgrading to 16GB gets you 24GB?? 24GB and 1TB storage, two grand. They are killing me.

Guess the 15" I'd like to have will be $2399.

Depends on your needs. For me, a 16" is just to big to lug around all the time. The MBA is powerful enough for most users, and easily transported. I had one until I opted for the 14" MBP, so now my M1 MBA is a back up.

If this is the case in the M2 Air; having only one chip instead of two, how much of a difference will it make to the average consumer using the Air for general purpose applications?

None really. Most users will never look at benchmarks or SSD tests; they just will use it and like it. Measurbation is a habit techies fall into while the rest of the world simply enjoys the tech without fretting over a few milliseconds here or there.

Let's see if it comes with slow SSD like the new MBP.

Was the SSD on the MBP throttled down for cooling or some other reason?

I’m hoping because the MBA was a new design from the ground up, it would have factored in new M2 and SSD thermals.

Whereas the MBP had new chips shoehorned into an older existing frame.

Would really like a laptop for my travel at the end of September, will have to see if I can score a 16/512GB BTO model and get it before then. :D The portability over the 14" makes it a far better deal than the specs versus dollars.

I think consolidating the NAND flash into one chip is the problem. You can only have so much throughput on a chip; having two (or more) in parallel can increase the overall transfer speed, up to a point of course.

It will bite those consumers in the future since the base model only have 8GB of RAM, and swapping will occur more often. The slower SSD will impact overall performance. Consumer will then think their mac slows down and decide to upgrade sooner than they would need to. Win for Apple.
