Nobody needs the MBA. I don't care how cool you are, how CEO you are, how many plane flights you do a day.

95% of people are A-Okay with just the Macbook.

boo hoo, i wanted a new mbp.

frankly, the mba is weird. i don't get who it's for.
My thoughts exactly! I'm so upset... why not new MBPs? Or AT LEAST a price drop, or do they not want it to compete with the new "Macbook Air"? I've been waiting for months for a refresh on the MBPs and I thought Macworld would end it... now its the waiting game all over again:mad:

ANYONE have any idea when they might refresh they're other notebooks? I mean its only a matter of time... and my patience is wearing thin...:p

Expensive

okay so in the UK price start at £1200, which is pretty expensive to begin with, but for the extra 64gb model it costs just over £2000! It looks pretty good but in reality isn't that much lighter than a standard macbook (hardly back breaking to carry in the first place) and with no optical drive its less convenient, and slower... i'll repeat £2000!!! that's $4000... mind you people are falling over themselves to buy an iPhone and that costs a fortune as well... what do i know? i'm sticking to my MBP though!

$1799 = £900 roughly yet on Apple Store in the UK it's £1200.

It's called duty and VAT, which works out at around 30% in all, which works out at $2338. or £1194, so it seems we get shipping to the UK for only £5 a pretty good deal really. Don't blame apple, blame Brown.

I don't like the OPTINOAL optical... seems sort of junky, and NECESSARY (for me at least):

1. How would I install new software?
2. I travel and watch DVDs on my current laptop all the time.

1. Remote Drive Software
2. Download/Rip movies onto the MBA

People need to stop looking at this like it's supposed to fit your power needs or even your usability. It's for a particular market, that doesn't seem to be the populace of this forum. Believe me this baby will sell.

Ha...so 10% doesn't soundl like "nobody" so you change your tune and now say that 5% is "nobody."

Let me guess, you'll be back in a second to re-post the same thing but with 95% changed to 100%.

Not happy about the GMA graphics but it isn't at all unexpected. People who care only about paper specs and price will go for a MacBook or MacBook Pro, but I think the Air will be a popular product - I suspect it's going to be amazing in the flesh.
I agree, but the GMA graphics are the same as on the regular MacBook, no? In which case, I'd just be grateful to not be stuck with the 950.

Not sure about the negatives on this either - Apple had some clear choices: power or portability, and they picked portability. For someone like me, who does a lot of writing on the side, the MBA is the perfect companion when drafting story ideas in a coffehouse. I'm not going to be editing HD video on it, or even doing extensive DJ work, nor do I want to pay $2300 for the equivalent Vaio. I think Apple targeted this niche well.

This is in no way more portable than a macbook. Lighter, doesnt mean more portable. You still need a bag, you still need to buy a CD Rom for it, and now you get to worry about breaking your 1700 dollar piece of crap.

Worthless. If this was 600 bucks, id consider it.

Then buy a MacBook and stop complaining about something you supposedly don't have any interest in.

Sorry. I'd rather take a Thinkpad over the MBA...

again

It is too expensive for what you actually get. IMO.

and again

What a cube.

and again

$6800 could have fed many poor children in Africa

and again (and tasteless to boot)

Sorry. I'd rather take a Thinkpad over the MBA...

and again

4200RPM drive?

Oh, so Apple basically forces you to spend $1000 more for the SSD.

Thanks Apple.

and again

I feel sorry for people blowing their money on this just to look cool

and again:rolleyes:

As a stockholder I'm sad to admit its a portable cube. And a crappy iPhone update. Stock continues to plummet as there wasn't one single surprise today.

This is a pretty and portable computer, for people who want pretty/portable computers (and don't mind the cost). So what is with all of the whiners? If you don't feel like you're in the target market, then don't buy it. Apple is just a corporation, they're not some sort of religious organization coercing you into buying their products.

hard drive limiting factor in the height?

Although this is really incredibly thin (love it!) I'm wondering whether the back side could have been made even thinner if it would only come with solid state storage (which can be made very thin, see the ipods).

I agree it definitely isn't an ultraportable. In terms of height and width it's largely the same size as a MacBook. A Sony TZ is physically far smaller.

It weighs 3.0 lbs! A MacBook weighs 5.0 lbs, nearly twice as much (well 1.67 as much). A Sony TZ weighs 3.0 lbs: same. This will be a big deal for many people.

I have to say it looks mighty nice, but I can already pick out a few gripes:

- doesn't look like there's a removable battery. I'm watching the product demo now so I hope I'm wrong on that.
- Lack of ethernet built in = bad
- Though slim, at 3 pounds it is heavy compared to other ultraportables. Probably light enough to not matter, but bragging-rights wise it's not exceptional here.
- $1000 for the 64 mb flash? Eeek.
- Seems to be a big lack of ports.
- 1.8" drive, I have some experience here. I bought a Thinkpad X31 about 4 years ago and it used the 1.8" drives -- very hard to find and expensive compared to the standard 2.5". My next Thinkpad X60 used standard 2.5" drives and it's tiny. The 1.8" drive is going to be a problem long-term.
- No firewire
- Still no docking architecture
- In fact, no expansion ability at all (no express card or pcmcia)
- Only 1 USB port

I have a Thinkpad X and I think it still comes out ahead.

thinner is hardly "more portable", thats the problem. ppl just carry a "large envelope" everywhere?

What a turd frankly... how about stop making crappy gadgets for people who think computers are a form of clothing and not a tool...

I take it you've never worked in a computer store and had customers say they would like a Mac laptop, but opt to buy a PC because they want an ultraportable/ultra-light notebook.

So yes, believe it or not, there is a market for this, and it isn't just people who want a new fashion accessory.

thinner is hardly "more portable", thats the problem. ppl just carry a "large envelope" everywhere?
When the difference in weight is one textbook between this and a MacBook or MacBook Pro, and when you have to reduce bulk in your backpack, then yes, it is "more portable." You'll take any reduction in weight and thickness you can get when you have to haul books around all day.
