This is pretty much exactly what I wanted. Basically a fully fledged laptop that does everything that a MacBook does but comes in a lighter, thinner package. 40% reduction in weight is no small thing when it comes to a laptop that you carry around all day. I don't agree with the people asking for smaller footprint (and thus a smaller screen and keyboard). The current MacBook keyboard is as small as it could comfortably be as far as I'm concerned (and I don't think I have particularly large hands for a adult male) and I also like my screen estate. I'm also not bothered by a lack of ports, I would only use the headphone jack most of the time anyways. I'm however slightly bothered by the slow processor and limited storage, so I'll probably wait for the first revision where these specs will surely be bumped up.

Reading through all the hate in these comments, it appears that few macrumors commenters are in the target group for this product. But the world is bigger (and on average less whinier) than the macrumors forums and of course there is a huge market out there for this laptop, I should know as I am a part of it.

Wow, now this is a sexy-looking piece of machinery! CURVES! Yes, Apple, give us more CURVES! I'm bored to tears with your minimalist design. How 'bout you make the rest of your line as sexy as this small notebook?

Oh, and WHERE'S MY xMAC?!?! Good grief, you couldn't have priced the Mac Pro any higher...

People bitch about the white keys on an aluminum keyboard, then Apple does a backlighted keyboard with black keys. The same people that bitched about the white and said black would be better are still bitching! (Grow a brain people.)

People say they want an ultra-light laptop and Apple still can't get it right!

Now the price is to high, guess you never priced the Sonys!

Good thing none of you whiners work at Apple, otherwise we would never have any products!

Guess what? Apple will sell a lot of these.....

I travel a lot and back in the windows days I used to carry IBM X series Notebooks with me.

Why? Because they fit into hotel safes easily since they have a small footprint. MBA is not fish and not meat, it is same footprint as Macbook and is thiner, whats the sense???

I will stick with Macbook + encrypted data on USB which goes into safes. If MB gets stolen, well... There comes insuarance, but my data is safe.

Also 1.8inch HDDs are DOG SLOW on transfer and especially random access, take in consideration slow CPU and you are into some painful experience.

battery isn't user replaceable?

engadget is reporting that the battery on this thing isn't user replaceable. that's probably about the most horrible idea i've ever heard of on a laptop - especially one that's kind of in the ultra-portable category.

glad i didn't wait to get my mbp.

it was a highly disappointing keynote for me... but that's probably because i REALLY want a new Cinema Display.

Wow, talk about rabble rabble rabble.

For the purpose that this machined was designed for, it's wonderful and significantly cheaper than its Sony counterparts.

Anyone expecting some outrageous performance beast does not have a good handle on reality. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Macbook Air

Was hoping for a DOCK, especially when I saw how thin it was, and the rumored Imac/laptop Dock patent. :(
Very Pricey :( for the one I spec'd out being close to my needs. I did not even include Final Cut or Arp. for my picture/video needs.

I guess thin is not for me. Maybe my first mac will be a macbook or pro. "as a side joke", someone once said we will have to pay for air. I guess this is what they meant. :D

This is a small form factor laptop...

No it's not. There's more to a small form factor than weight, and thickness isn't it. It has the same footprint as a Macbook. That's not small form factor.

I think removing the optical drive was inspired, and soon all subnotebook makers will be copying it.

You mean like they've been doing for years?

Macsrsocool, please stop posting.

I understand how you would like to relinquish the "Macrumors Newbie" title from your name, but please find another thread to "up" your post count.

It's called duty and VAT, which works out at around 30% in all, which works out at $2338. or £1194, so it seems we get shipping to the UK for only £5 a pretty good deal really. Don't blame apple, blame Brown.

from the uk store

£1,199.00
(£1,020.43 ex VAT)

why blame Brown the Tories introduced the 17.5% vat rate!

I am surprised about the name (I posted earlier on why I doubted they would name it 'air').

I laughed one laugh (again, as I posted), and now...

That machine is making me drool!

I and my wife all ready to order before the keynote. 1 usb, 1.6 Ghz, USB ethernet are all fine. Even price is okay. But...

Limited to 2GB ram
1200*800

I plan on running VMWare fusion, but 2GB seems a little weak.

Bloody hell the SSD is a £639 option!
Steve wasnt kidding when he said they were pricey!

Looks nice and i want one but not at that price. No thanks!

Awesome tho. That remot drive idea is really clever!

Forget that... I'm sure this would fit too, all 416Gb of it...
Though, you might have to get another mortgage first! :D

Mbp

So wheres this MBP update i'v (and millions of others) been waiting for!?!

Also, the price difference from the US and UK is just idiotic and theft IMO..

No MacBook Pro Announcement?

Any one else disappointed that Apple didn't announce an update to the MBPro? It's way over due. I've been holding out thinking it would be updated today, and now I'm not sure what to do. Don't want to make the same mistake I made buying an AirPort Extreme a couple weeks before Time Capsule.

What a slap in the face, $1799 and they can't throw in the remote? It's $19 to get the remote for front row. I also like how Jobs talks about the LED screen being nice for keynote presentations. Like you're going to be presenting a slideshow on that little screen. It would make sense if he talked about the micro DVI out being great for presentations though. Maybe the person who typed up that bit mixed up something?

Good job on the speedy updates Arn, Longfest and the other's who helped out. Probably the smoothest coverage to date. I liked how I could still access the forums during the keynote too. :)

BIG Disappointment.

I was extremely disappointed with the AIR. :(

Sure it's thin, and not very heavy, and looks thinner than it really is.

But whats up with that?

I started out with a beloved 12" Powerbook. When that died i bought a 13" MacBook. Gave that away, because I hated it. Now i'm on a 15" MacBook Pro. Real nice machine, but way to big.

I really looked forward to a small and sexy new portable series of macs. But what did we get?? A silver colored overpriced Mac book.

I hope they release a small MacBook serie soon. I need a small computer to carry around together with my MBP 15" standing still on the table.

Please, I don't believe in God, I believe in Jobs. So hear my prairs and I will eat my vegetables every day from now on.

But the AIR - Big disappointment

Is it me or dont people want ultra portable notebooks to be small as in the diagonal size, and not necessarilly super duper thin?

Diagonal size determines keyboard & display size - and those make a big difference in the user experience. Some of the really small ultra portables out there are just TOO small to use regularly IMO.

I don't think there is any validity to the complaints about lack of Blu Ray - sure, at some point we will all be using that or HD-DVD, but is it really something that absolutely SHOULD be a feature on laptops for them to be considered current? I think not.

People pick up the laptops they are considering buying, because, well small laptops are meant to be carried. They will immediately notice the reduced weight and thickness.

Perhaps to a certain buyer that's true however it's not that much lighter and it's also physically slightly wider and longer. It's also a lower spec, doesn't have an integrated dvd and costs far more.

I guess I'm just disappointed Apple didn't come out with a true ultra-portable e.g. 12" screen max and suitable form factor. Perhaps the development cost and technology at present wouldn't allow them to differentiate their product from a Vaio TZ or similar (although not forgetting the not insubstantial benefit of OSX).

This just seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist, I haven't read any great outcry from consumers for a laptop that's ultra-thin only. I think there is a big demand for a replacement for a 12" Mac notebook.

I'd suspect there really would be a huge demand for a proper ultra-notebook but then who am I to question Steve Jobs? It will probably sell by the boat load!
