Vanity

This thing is a vanity buy all the way.
If all you're buying this thing for is getting online, typing the occasional document in Word, and not much more, then you can get a MacBook that's not that much larger for way less money. Seriously, it's not like the MBA can do anything that the other Apple laptops can't other than be slightly smaller. So what's the only motivation for buying it? Cause it's sexy. That's it.

The MBA is going to have some serious problems.

1) Warping.

2) Bending

3) Cracks

Macrumors will be flooded. Run now:(

Maybe already said many times, but how many of you think
MacBook Air == Cube ?
It's cuter, but less flexibility !

Could be either a restore partition on the hard drive, or OS X on a USB stick. Network booting has been possible for decades too...

It will be interesting to see how advanced the firmware on the MacBook Air is.

Unless Apple was able to place a read-only OS X install on a flash chip on the MBA.

As for the network:

Despite the advances in wireless, a wired cable connection is still more stable and better.

Same screen.

The screen is now LED backlit and has a glass cover. That makes it pretty different in my book.
Why not dump the borders and edge bezel thing?

Because the battery, HD, logic board and keyboard are OBVIOUSLY the limiting factors here. Look at the keynote pictures.

I am sad that Apple seem to have got this wrong. I hate it when they get tunnel vision, because I like them so much.

No Canadian iPhone either........

*sigh* you seem to have the tunnel vision here for not understanding who this computer is for. You seem to think that since its not for you, it can't possibly be for anyone

(Note: I am not buying a MBA, just simply clairifying that there is more than one person in this world besides you)

you called it!! the option is $999

This is amazing that they are offering it that cheap.

Newegg has the 2.5inch 64gb ssd for $1533.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609244

Apple is using 1.8inch drives, so $999 is crazy cheap compared to what else is out there. And i havent seen many 1.8inch ssd drives that big for sale. People complaining do not realize how revolutionary this one fact alone is. Apple will help bring SSD prices way down. GO apple!!!!

I think we all wanted SMALLER. not SKINNY

Yeah, as soon as he started on about "other companies miniaturizing their keyboards" i knew this was the case... Same w/ the iPod Touch: would've loved MORE memory and not quite as thing.

Questions

1. What the weights with SSD vs. traditional hard drive? (was 3.0 lbs SSD and the 1.8 is heavier or that the SSD brings it down)

2. What is the difference in battery life between the SSD and the traditional HDD? SSDs are nice because they are lighter and use less juice, does this get us around 6 or 7 hours of use?

3. Anyone know if they have floor models in their stores even if the sales are out?

4. Anyone wonder why they are not narrower given the excess space on either side of the

5. Wonder what the sound is like? Where are the speakers?

6. Curious on the size of the power adapter.

Too many hardware bigots in this thread...migraine....

This is a small form factor laptop, and yet people are complaining that it doesn't have features (Blu Ray) that most full-size don't have. Give me a break...! This wasn't intended as a performance barn-burner. People complaining about lack of a card slot for cellular modems have more of a case, but I don't see it as a deal-breaker. See Foxy Kaye's post above.

I think removing the optical drive was inspired, and soon all subnotebook makers will be copying it. This is a Neo-Duo.

Why does Apple make the MacBook and MacBook Pro? Why not just one model?

Why do they make the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro? Why not just one model?

Why not just offer the iMac instead of the MM and MP since it's all-in-one which is the simplicity and ease of use that are Apple design hallmarks?

Why do they make the iPod Shuffle, the iPod Nano, the iPod Classic, and the iPod Touch? Why not just one model?

Because each device appeals to a different market.
...And yet I still can't get a 1920 screen in a 15" form factor portable from Apple - something I've been able to do on the PC side for over 5 years - even as a BTO option.

...And yet there's still no Blu-ray drive option available from Apple on ANY machine in their entire lineup, even though they're on the consortium and standalone readers and burners from third-party vendors have been available for ages.

I'm all for different models that suit different needs, but the problem with Apple is you can't get everything you want like you can with a PC - even if you're willing to pay for it.

The new Mac Pros were almost a complete oversight at this year's MWSF and the only real new product we're seeing here - the Mac Book "Air," (seriously??) seems to be extremely overpriced and underpowered. I think they're making a huge mistake by omitting the optical drive and firewire completely. One USB port is next to useless. I can understand if the intent is for users to have a lightweight email and internet browsing machine that's slim and easy to take on the road, but I'm not going to pay $1,800 just to be able to check my email.

Apple can make all the niche toys they want - sometimes they're cool - but they're really starting to drop the ball on the core product that ties everything together: the Mac. If all of the different models they offer become aimed only at niche markets, what are the rest of us supposed to do except look at alternative options?

As a PC user for most of my life and certainly not a Mac fanboy, maybe I can offer a different perspective. I like Leopard - a lot - and I think it's a far better OS than Microsoft's latest offering. I also use a lot of software that is proprietary to the Mac, like Final Cut Pro, so I spend a lot of time in front of one. But it's hard to get excited about their new offerings when it seems like there is always a compromise of some kind. I don't think the opinions of the people here who are "always complaining" about new product launches are really unwarranted. New computers are a big investment and especially from a company who likes to flaunt themselves as "leading the way," I think people are right to have high expectations. Products like the MBA just offer one new feature ("really thin form factor" in this case), by compromising on a host of others (pretty much every other aspect of the machine) and don't get us any further ahead than we were before. It's no surprise the stock is falling and people are so ho-hum about the keynotes these days.

Remember when we'd actually get a "one more thing," and it would be actually be something revolutionary and useful? I hope those days are not over for Apple.

Yeah...same as the iPod Mini!

Oh, wait. That was far and away one of the best-selling iPods up to that point?

Hmm...

Which was also cheaper than the 'proper' iPod which brought it to a wider market

Thank you. Um, you are in fact correct. However, do you have any comments on the actual point of my post? That it's a worse performer than the macbook?

The more expensive macbook comes with the 120gb, but is still cheaper than the air. And, at 4200 rpm it's slower than the MB's drive.

Ah I catch your drift
I stand corrected (Y)

Nobody needs the MBA. I don't care how cool you are, how CEO you are, how many plane flights you do a day.

95% of people are A-Okay with just the Macbook.

Do you work for Lenevo?

Ok.
But come on. 1 USB port? You ARE kidding right? What on earth can I do with a single USB port? :).

Duh! It's a portable...how many usb devices do you regularly carry round in your briefcase - portable scanner, portable printer, portable back-up drive? When at home do what everyone else does - use a hub. Use some common sense!

It's funny actually.... You guys whip yourselves in to a hysterical pre-keynote frenzy. You start making wild guesses, with each guess more fantastical than the one before it. And when the keynote is over.... you whine. No matter what new products Apple releases, you whine. Endless, non-stop whine can be heard everywhere. It lasts for few days, maybe few weeks and then it quiets down. Just in time for next event/keynote, and that's when the cycle restarts.

It's hilarious to watch.

Yes, the Air is quite amazing but no firewire is the deal killer for me.

I am in need of a laptop and was waiting for today to see what was announced. I think a 15" MBP will suit my needs better.

Same here. I've been holding out and now it's a MBP for me.

The MBA is the Cube, 2008 edition.

A modest hardware performer (slower than the regular Macbook - that 1.8" 4200RPM drive will not benchmark well) in a new cool package.

We'll just have to wait and see to know if there are enough "executives" willing to spend the premium to save 2lb. and 1/4" in thickness over the MB.

However, my biggest concern today about the MBA, as a regular Macbook owner, is that now the MB won't be getting improvements such as a backlit keyboard, or LED backlight, for fear of cannibalizing MBA sales.

Is it me or dont people want ultra portable notebooks to be small as in the diagonal size, and not necessarilly super duper thin?

I love my Macbook but I want a smaller ultra portable notebook and the Sony TZ series is less than a foot diagonally which is perfect for carrying around. This new Macbook Air is the same size as my Macbook but just thin, which I dont really care about. Still looks pretty sweet but I wish they would have made it with a 10" screen.

Is it really an integrated battery? Isn't the whole point of a subnotebook for the ease of traveling? What's the point if you can't carry a spare battery. Looks like my next laptop will be a 12" Dell with extra battery and Ubuntu.

Talk about a crippled laptop. :p

What i'd like to know is if the MBA with a solid state drive has a Sudden Motion Sensor. Although it will not be needed in the event of a fall it would be an absolute necessity for theft-protection (for programs like iAlertU)....

I was really looking forward to a MBP update but this is actually better for me because I'd play far too many games on the MBP.
