The footnotes on the MacBook Air specifications page clearly states the batter is replaceable.

"Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. "

That note is on the bottom of almost every battery using product they sell. Last I checked the iPhone/iPod don't have a user replaceable battery.

I bought a 12" powerbook recently for exactly one third of the price, $600 (before adding leopard). It may be a little thicker (1") and heavier, but it isn't as wide. The powerbook also has a built in super-drive. The specs are lower, in that it is only 1.5 GHz and 1.25 GB RAM, but it has a faster 80 GB HD at 5400 rpm. Also the PB has poor WiFi reception. And missing is of course the backlit keyboard and such goodies. But it was only a fraction of the price.

Point being, for a travel computer I see an upgrade difficult to justify. But you can't buy a new powerbook.

At least there's one logical post in the middle of this debacle.

This is exactly the niche apple is after. I'll be buying a laptop to complement my iMac and will be considering the Air. Perfect device to throw in a backpack and take with you or lounge on the couch with to browse the net.

One USB port isn't great, but will suffice when using the Air for what it is intended for.

As far as footprint goes, I don't care whether it is a 10", 12" or 13" display as it will have to get put in a bag regardless.

Yeah, or you could just get a regular old macbook that comes with a faster processor, more ports, etc for a lot cheaper. If you are thinking logically about this, the weight reduction and thinning isn't enough to justify the dramatic drop in capabilities or the dramatic rise in price.

at least...

I can buy my MacBook now. I was wondering whether this new laptop would be compelling enough for me to spend the extra cash. Personally, I think the plain MacBook is better suited and more convenient for my needs.

Nice product with minor flaws

I think its a really good product to complement your existing iMac or MBP, especially for people who just need it for writing/presentations, communicating, etc. like professional writers, students, teachers, consultants.

The design is gorgeous, judging from the available pictures I only wish Jonny Ive had made the keys on this thing silver like on the MBP or white like on the new iMac keyboard. But maybe it looks better in person.

And I don't really miss an optical drive, but I do miss a regular ethernet port, as you don't get to use (open) WLAN in most of the places where I need to work.

from the uk store

£1,199.00
(£1,020.43 ex VAT)

why blame Brown the Tories introduced the 17.5% vat rate!

All I'm saying is it's not Apple's decision to up the price over here. It's just the way it is....All the US prices are exclusive of sales tax too which every whining brit seems to forget....

Wow, talk about rabble rabble rabble.

For the purpose that this machined was designed for, it's wonderful and significantly cheaper than its Sony counterparts.

Anyone expecting some outrageous performance beast does not have a good handle on reality. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Thank you. This is why apple has Macbooks and Macbook Pros. So many people here have an unrealistic expectation that this thing will be smaller, cheaper and more powerful than its bigger siblings.

Honestly, how often do you use more than 1 USB port? The only time i've done so is with my old RF wireless mouse and a flash drive. Nothing a $10 USB hub can't fix.

Underwhelming. My boss is a PC user and wanted to switch to Mac but was waiting for an ultraportable. The thing is, we use ethernet networking and wifi is not allowed, and so the Air is useless here.

I wonder by how much the ebay prices on 12''PBs will increase after today's keynote....

Im sure there will be ppl buying it, just not a good product in any logical way.

sadly dissapoint in this keynote

all we got is an overpirce notebook

1800 is over priced and not worth it IMHO

Quite the opposite. A fantastic keynote overall: 1) they finally added features to my Apple TV and actually didn't charge for the update! 2) iPhone software update! 3) new macbook. However, the time capsule could be better.

Missing: Where the hell is airport express N?
Shady: $20 iPod touch update. Seriously, wtf. I encourage touch owners to download and install it w/o paying (if possible).

After reading the Keynote I watched the guided tour. That Macbook Air looks fine and sweet, bit pricy. I started reading this topic and after 15 pages i started the guided tour again. Stood up, walked upto my current black macbook. Lift it carefully. The orginal Macbook is thin too! And it has a 80gb hdd, 2 GB, 13 inch display, it never failed on me and it looks awsome. And the best thing? It's allready mine! Don't have to spend any money.

Oh yeah, by not spending 1800 bucks i still got firewire so i can import my footage of Miami. The Macbook is awsome!

macbook air colours?

the wikipedia entry briefly stated that the macbook air came in five colours- this has since been altered. Is this just someone messing about?

So, I'm the guy they made this for. I have a 2.4 20" Al iMac on my desk at home, and a 2.2 C2D White iMac on my desk at work. My current laptop is a Black Macbook CD 2.0, which I like very much, but I'm still a little bitter about my 12" Rev A. 867 G4 giving up the ghost middle of last year, and the extra size of the MacBook.

I use my laptop almost 100% as a mail/web/Office tool when away from either of my desks, and what I want more than anything is a thin, light laptop with a full-size keyboard and a decent screen. The MacBook screen is IMHO an awesome compromise between size and space - No complaints. The Macbook keyboard is great - I'm one of the ones who likes it.

So, give me that screen and keyboard, with the same HD space as my Macbook, 2Gigs RAM standard, ~70% of the volume and 60% of the weight, and I'm SOLD.

I just don't understand all the 'it's only a little thinner'. Thin is nice, but for the exec on the run, shaving 2/5 of the weight is the real win.

The only thing I'm not thrilled with is the 1.6 processor, though the proc in my existing laptops isn't exactly spending a lot of time at max. Not sure how I feel about losing Firewire - Don't use it much, except for Firewire disk mode, which can be mighty handy.

I'll need to see it in person to have a clear idea of how I feel about the design. The bezel is thicker than I like, and I'm not sure how I feel about the shape.

But in all liklihood, it'll be mine the day they come available.

One question - I'd heard that 1.8 drives at 4200rpm actually provide decent performance, since the diameter is so much smaller, you actually get roughly equivalent performance to a standard laptop drive. Anyone have enough experience with the little drives to have an opinion?

So they finally made the ultimate notebook for Paris Hilton. Huzzah!

K, well... I guess this is going to be a huge hit among Wall Street execs who want to whip'em out and measure'em to see whose is the thinnest, but for everyone else it's pretty useless. No firewire and *one* USB port? One? And if you need to plug in the external SuperDrive you have to disconnect whatever's plugged into that port? As my primary software uses a USB dongle, that's gonna be a pain in the ass. People who get the Time Capsule AND the external SuperDrive for their MB Air will be heard groaning a lot...

This is the most underwhelming keynote I've ever seen. Granted, I've only followed them for five years or so, but... man. What happened to that iMac-like docking station, which would have made the MB Air a little less useless? What about a consumer oriented desktop Mac that doesn't cost an arm and a leg (no, not the iMac, I already have that...)?

And please, don't give me the "you don't have to buy it" crap. That's just the thing. I have this money burning a hole in my pocket and for the first time in ages I won't be spending it on whatever Steve showed @ the latest keynote. You won't benefit from Apple not getting my money...

air

You people are amazing. have any of you looked at how much ssd drives and other hardware cost? intel custom shrunk a core2 chip for apple. It's powerful enough for web, email, office work, it's not intended for playing games, editing movies, etc. I'm ordering 10 for my companies executives and one for me to use for email, web and to manage my osx servers. But i would never consider it a replacement for my mbp. why go on this site if all you do is complain about apple and their products?

Guess what? Apple will sell a lot of these.....
I agree completely.

I think a lot of people here are losing perspective on one major point when comparing the MacBook Air to the G4 Cube. Well, actually, a number of points:

1. Geeks are not the same as regular consumers. What you as a MacRumors reader/technophile wants and what consumers want isn't always the same thing.
2. There is a market for this thing. This is great for students, frequent travelers, and anyone else who wants/needs a lightweight machine to toss in their bag and do work on. It's not a pro machine. It's not supposed to be. In the case of the Cube, there was no real market for it. Consumers opted for the iMac, pros opted for the G4 tower, leaving the G4 Cube stuck somewhere in the middle.
3. This thing is not that expensive when compared to other ultra-portable/ultra-light laptops. I don't have numbers in front of me right now, but from my experience selling computers at the UC Berkeley campus computer store, $1800 for an ultraportable/ultralight laptop is not abnormally high.

This is amazing that they are offering it that cheap.

Newegg has the 2.5inch 64gb ssd for $1533.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609244

Apple is using 1.8inch drives, so $999 is crazy cheap compared to what else is out there. And i havent seen many 1.8inch ssd drives that big for sale. People complaining do not realize how revolutionary this one fact alone is. Apple will help bring SSD prices way down. GO apple!!!!

That bleedin tiny!
You really should check this one out... 2.5"

http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/04/bitmicro-introduces-832gb-ssd-for-ces-2008/

Or the 1.8" version.. by SanDisk.

One More Point...

One more point...

Apple does not develop products in a vacuum. I doubt very much Steve said "this darn MacBook weighs too much" and lo, the MacBook Air was decreed.

Apple has seen the profit margins small, light, ultra-portables bring in, even if they make up a very small niche of the overall portable market. It also has a "halo" effect on the entire company and the more...mundane...parts of the product line. They knew there was a market for people who will buy the MacBook Air for what it is just as there were people who bought the iPhone and the :apple:tv for what they were - the result of thinking different, even if in the case of the MacBook Air it is mostly in terms of the form factor.

If Apple had released a new MacBook and MacBook Pro today with Penryns, the hue and cry in here would be lower because people would go "Not for me. I'll take the MacBook (Pro)". But they didn't, so now some fear that Apple has "abandoned" them and their product in pursuit of a niche they either do not care about or cannot justify the expense of joining.

However, Apple did not release the MacBook Air at the expense of the MacBook or MacBook Pro. They released it to enhance people's view of Apple as a company and the MacBook line as a whole.

Also, Intel is running late with the mobile Penryn and is quickly moving to a new platform - Montevina - within a few months. Apple might very well have decided to wait for Montevina, or they are being forced to wait for Penryn. Either way, new MacBooks and MacBook Pros will be coming soon enough.

Smart post!

It's interesting how such a tiny subset of Apple's target market loves to complain about their products.

Apple, from the get-go, has been a form/function-over-power company. Their machines have never been as "powerful" as lower-priced Wintel boxes. So why complain that the MBA doesn't have a 3.2Mhz Penryn-based processsor, a higher-resolution screen, and a 1 TB SSD?

I am a Mac fan. I made the mistake a few years ago of buying a PC (from Voodoo) thinking I wanted to make the switch to a FAST, POWERFUL machine to do things, well, FASTER and MORE POWERFULLY. It didn't happen. Windows so cripples Wintel boxes that, well, who cares if your machine is spec'd out to the max; when it DOES boot, it'll get a virus. Sure, if you're a hardcore gamer, you MIGHT want a PC. But xbox and PS3 are more fun than a PC.

I use my Mac all the time. And, I am cognizant of what I use. I need about 20G of HD space. I don't need the optical drive to go with me. And why would I need all my music on the laptop? I've got an iPod for that. I've got a briefcase which is just slightly too small for a 15-inch MBP, and I carry the briefcase everywhere. So . . . cue the MBA.

I think the MBA is cool. It's sleek. Yeah, the black keyboard is weird. But I ordered one!

And the great thing is . . . nobody has to like it but me.

Everyone's criticisms are valid, don't get me wrong. I think the power users among us will be seeing more relevant improvements later in the year, with better MBPs and perhaps a (long-awaited) redesign of the MacPro. Maybe they'll slim down the MBP a little and spec the crap out of it . . .
