Hahahaha They took a standard 13.3" Macbook, made it a little thinner, and slapped a new name on it. LOL That's not an ultra-portable, that's taking the behemoth Macbook and modernizing it a bit to make it a little thinner. LOL I love how Steve called out the Sony TZ, as if somehow this were an ultra-portable. The thing weighs 3 lbs and has a 13.3" screen, it's not a TZ in anything other than frickin thickness. The TZ or even the EEE-pc are tiny by comparison.

And all the Mac-sheep go BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH. What a crappy product. An underpowered thinner Macbook that's not an ultra-portable, not small enough, not light enough, and really fits no market category except a thinner "standard" laptop. They should really get rid of Steve. He's bringing NOTHING to the table lately but crap.

$1799 for this piece of garbage? LOL You can buy 5 EEE PCs. And you can actually put those in your pocket.

Build a frickin UMPC Apple, your new product "wows" are drying up when your new technology is increasingly recycled crappy technology in a prettier form.

Laptop for the Hungry

This product is only a smattering of what it could have been if apple would have waited. In the next year there will be advances in battery life, size and technology. As well as processor speed in relation to size. It is also my opinion but one which is very well informed. I declare this product to be a piece of what is to come or if anything a piece of infrastructure for future development. As for the price maybe I am wrong expecting more for my buck so to speak. Is the "more" in this case a drop in size because a few pounds (MBP) can be so heavy and all. Perhaps this is the laptop line designed for the on the go anorexic -

Forgive me but do you consider what other people might want from a machine before you declare the product dead or is it just your opinion that counts?

I guarantee you that at this very moment IT departments across the land are fearing for their budgets when one of their executives claps their eyes on this. It's not a performance box, none of the ultra-portables out there are, but as far as I know there's nothing to touch this on performance in this packaging. A 1.6Ghz Core 2 Duo is MORE than enough for the majority of people and for those that need more there's the MBP line. 80Gb hard drive might be less than you'd like but I've got just that in my MB and that's got a bootcamp partition installed as well as all my apps, music, documents, photos etc and there's still at least 30gb free.

The price is a little steep but, again, for these sort of machines it actually seems to be quite low (pending build-to-order costs of course). For those that really want something slim and light to carry around this is going to be ideal. Is it going to be the top selling Mac Laptop? No, not a chance. But a profitable product to draw yet more attention to the company and get more people thinking about switching? Yep, it'll do that very nicely indeed.

Me? I'll stick with my 17" MBP for now as I do, on occasion, have need of the raw grunt and, more importantly, the screen real estate. But for my wife this could be a very nice option indeed.

should i say again?
SSD harddrive + journaled system like OSX sounds like a disaster combo to me.

i don't know anyone who would pay $3098 for a Macbook that didn't have Pro next to it.

$3000 platform to surf the web on a tiny screen... pass me the crack pipe Steve

I love how everyone complaining about the price just ignores the $1,799 model. Like it doesn't exist or something.

I guess bringing that up just doesn't sound as good, huh?

FAIL

They should call this the Macbook Cube, because it's going to go the way of the Cube within a year or two.

There was no mention of what graphics card they will be using. I assume that since it is a MBP, it should contain a dedicated GPU and VRAM.

Just saw on the store site that it uses GMA X3100.... and it's not the Pro it's the Air.

I'd surprised if they were able to fit a GPU in there, but I'm still disappointed that they didn't...

Ah well, my 12" PB hasn't reached the end of its life yet. Granted, the Air does look mighty cool...

What other laptop mfg is putting SSD drives in their machines? No one expects them to sell in great qty, but coming to market with it is a good step in the right direction.

And that is why they will release a new one at MWSF 2009. :D

I will happily stick with my MBP.

I didnt like that they took out the DVD Rom. The fact that they lowered the harddrive is crazy...people already complain about the 120GB space limitations. The keyboard is ugly. And its not like the MBP is huge...it is perfectly portable for me.

Look at the microscopic motherboard! Also look at its aspect ratio. If that were put into a MID form factor with clamshell and dual display, the lower one being a display keyboard, we may some day have our long awaited iPhone not nano.

Rocketman

jeez

wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wowowowowowowowowowowowowow

WOW!!!

effing beautiful. I want one! it looks phenomenal.

I love it, looks lovely.. just watched the ad/product demo..

BUT, no network port? big issue for a consultant/admin like me :( I see they are doing a USB dongle/adapter for eth, like the modem. hrmmm.

v'nice looking on the site!

Let the bitching commence. You people are unbelievable. This is a gorgeous machine, and both more affordable and more technically dazzling than ANYTHING else in this weight category.

God almighty.

Then don't buy it! Jeez... You can't get 1920 AND a miniature form factor.

In fact, seriously, if you join this forum and this thread just to point out a missing feature, please try to understand that the thing is .75 thick, and is made for those to whom SIZE and not HORSEPOWER is the key.

If you need other stuff, check out the MB or MBP - each have strengths.

This is a discussion forum though, right? I think it's a valid point that consumers would have to pay a premium for an underperforming, but beautiful laptop.

The EEE PC, unlike this piece of garbage fronting as a UMPC, comes with standard flash ram, is a REAL ultra-portable in size, and is $199-$399.

this is no pro, it's air.

apple store said:
Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory

1799 is still over priced.

AGREED

this will not sell very well its gonna be way to nitchy. Apple had alot of the college crowd with the macbook but i don't think there gonna be able to sell this nearly as well

It's the ultimate piece of garbage. It's a standard 13.3" laptop that been shrunk as far as ONLY thickness. It is not an ultra-portable, it's not even that light at 3 pounds. It's hardware crippled despite it's huge screen in the realm of UMPCs. And it's overpriced. Essentially it's a modernized Macbook standard laptop that fits no category and is garbage.

Do you think current MBPs and MacBooks will be able to use the new toutchpad gestures? Perhaps in 10.5.2?
