Serlet

Dear Apple!

Please bring back Serlet (The cool MAC OSX Frenchman!)
We need more MAC OSX love again!

Thanks!

Bye-bye skeuomorphism, we never liked ye.

Skeuomorphisms has been part of user interfaces for as long as there has been computers, and will be there for probably as long as there will be computers. That said, there are good and bad skeuomorphism and it's been mostly bad in OS X and iOS lately.

My mind just went boom. It's nice to see apple clearing out all the people who had terrible ideas (siri, maps) and giving other people more control.

Have to say I'm not digging the Forstall hate/bashing. Yeah, skeumorphism is a little cheesy but the guy was central to one of the most amazing things at Apple. His work on OS X alone would be amazing enough but it's pretty clear that iOS is the future of Apple and he's done great work on that as well.

Yeah, he's not on Team Apple anymore but I don't think that's any reason to start trashing the guy.

I second what you said.

By the way I can't remember where I read this: it's Scott who foresaw the App Store.

Before the launch of the App Store, there were many people trying to install native apps on the iPhone in an unauthorised way (i.e. jailbreaking). For this reason, Scott convinced Steve to make an App Store, instead of just having web apps.

(please correct me if I'm wrong)

Only time will tell.

Of these two men, the one that may have been a mistake to let go is Forstall.

As for all of you that believe that this move is appropriate, I truly hope you are right.

I would say that it was the 3rd party developers and jail breakers who foresaw the App Store. Hey Scott, if you're out there, thanks for pointing out the obvious.

Browett should never been hired. Scott new his days were numbered after Steve passed. Tim took too long IMO (Maps, App Store).

It shows Tim is not afraid to admit missteps, and take decisive action. Great Leadership, and future vision.

Nice reorganization. Very defined. :) :apple:

p.s. Any thoughts on Ron coming back to Apple Retail?

iOS finally has hope! So long Scott!
Forstall was one of Jobs' favorites for a reason. There would have been no iOS app store without him. Jobs originally wanted a closed system, but it was Forstall that kept arguing with him about the benefits of bringing in third party developers, and finally Steve agreed.

And for all the comments about skeuomorphism, it may be helpful to rememer that most of that came from Steve; Forstall merely kept it going.

I'm not saying there isn't a potential upside to having Ive manage SW along with HW, but it's not quite clear just yet that this is an unquestionable win. Sometimes it helps to keep people focused, to not spread them too thin. Ive is a remarkably capable designer, but he's only human.

1st thing to do: change that awful notes app on iOS and OS X - it's the perfect example for a stupid interface that keeps the app behind its possibilities just for the sake of fake "beauty".

Unbelievably good news and a real sign that Cook is the right man for the position.

Well, with Jobs no longer there, I don't see that Forstall has any role now.

The App Store is one of the most profoundly evil things Apple has ever done.

So evil that it made a ton of money for developers ($6.5B!). Far more than Palm ever made for PalmOS developers by not creating a centralized controlled app store, and thus letting all the independent app distribution channels fight, raise their percentages, and even go bankrupt without paying.

Bad move. It's when you give one person too many responsibilities that things begin breaking down.

This is true. Jony Ive is an industrial designer, that's his field.

This is something Steve WOULD NOT HAVE done, especially with such talented people.
Forstall was there since the 90's, Steve recognised his talent and Scott along with Ive had a HUGE influence on the resurgence of Apple.
Sure Scott has made errors, but they're minimal in comparison to what's he done for the company over the years.

The hate here for Scott is totally unjustified. This would have never happened under Steve but I suppose the loss of Steve is the problem.

Steve could manage all the egos, they all listened and respected him. Steve was the guy that made everything click.
I just worry Tim won't be able to lead the team in such an efficient way.
This is the first time I'm genuinely worried about Apple's future.

I hope looking back in three years, that I'm wrong.

Cook: So Johnny, how is the new iOS coming along?

Ive: Tim, first I meditated on the beaches of South France for a few weeks. Then my team sketched for a few months. Then we began making tiny, life-size molds of every button and scrollbar, in several dozen different space age materials. We sanded them, polished them and had to replace all the lighting in the studio to get the reflectance we wanted on the UI elements. It was all rubbish, so we binned it all and started over. This time we are making all the button models at 100X life size, so you can stand next to it and really get a feel for what that button will look like on our new 8K iPhone displays. I can't let you see that yet, because it's still in the secret lab, behind those doors over there.

Cook: ...so...

Ive: I'm sorry, but your presence is throwing off my Chi. Please leave now.

Cook: ...
Lol, that sounds about right.

pretty sure we won't see Ive working on iOS 7 but rather the version after. iOS 7 is still probably under the guidance of Scott.
We've got a long time until iOS 7, I think it's entirely plausible that Ive's influence will be in there.

The following may be a little bit conspiratorial:

'Forstall’s older brother, Bruce, has been a senior software design engineer at Microsoft (MSFT) for 20 years; imagine the Thanksgiving dinner conversations.' (http://www.businessweek.com/magazin...orcerers-apprentice-at-apple-10122011.html#p3) — What is he planning to do after leaving Apple?

And just for fun:

No wonder why Scott didn't laugh at all except after he had watched the iPad mini 'Piano' ad.

I am sure is he deeply upset.... with his £38 fricking million share sale on friday. Positively distraught and crying into his Wallet

Browett is finally out... Thank God! He was gonna ruin Apple retail.

As for Ive designing iOS UI... I'm excited beyond belief! Apple has just made some bold and right decisions which will lead into exciting new year!

Steve Jobs put Forstall where he is. I think a lot of people are celebrating something that they dont know much about. Who knows where this will lead? Forstall has been highly influential and sounds like he had Steves type of demanding personality. Yea it looks like he made some mistaked but Steve knew about every single software release we currently have that people are complaining about. This could be a good move or it could turn out to be negative. Let's hope Forstall doesnt take his abilities and knowledge to a competitor. Im sure he has a non-compete but lets hope he doesnt have an axe to grind.

I'm glad Browett is gone. For some reason he thought his new job at Apple was to turn Apple's best in the world retail model into the same model that most consumers hate. I'm surprised that someone who didn't seem to understand the Apple retail model would be given the job.

I'm not as sure about Forstall leaving, he may be difficult to work with but he's been involved in OSX since the NeXt days. He departs with an enormous amount of knowledge and experience that Apple has built their success on.

I hope Tim Cook is able to balance out all of the different personalities and competing ideas in order to keep people on at Apple. Forstall has still had many more successes than he has failures but it seems like he's better at executing other people's ideas than deciding which if his own are best.

The App Store is one of the most profoundly evil things Apple has ever done.

Explain How?

Making money for Developers?

Proving a rich choice of software for users ( and a lot of junk - nut not apples Fault that )

Money driving Devs to make better software to make more money

As opposed to googles that has been a pirate heven where devs had all but given up making any money at all until they finally code signed ( although all still piratable )

Yup positively Demonesque.

The application is fine. It is actually very good. Like the way it lets you scale and rotate the maps absolutely smoothly. When you zoom in to a higher resolution map, this is done very well. It uses a lot less data for the same display than other apps do, which is especially useful when you're not on WiFi.

Now the data that it uses leaves a lot to be desired.

No, the application is junk too. The way it handles poi icons is really badly designed, and the way it scales those icons is desperately ill thought out.

It's search process is also completely, completely broken.
