Have you actually used it?

I did. Tried to see street view - not there. Tried to use public transportation features - did not find any. Tried to figure out placement of the buildings in college campus - nothing. Traffic data support? Questionable. Search for places around me? So, so.

OOOOrrrrrrrr

Tim Cook wants to exit as CEO and is taking Scott Forstall directly as his protege for a year before turning the reigns over to him...

Or Cook is eliminating (perceived) competition within.

Probably they will put back Google Maps before market opens on Wednesday.

RIP Apple Maps.

Jony Ive designing the interface of iOS 7? Yes, please.

Image

hmm... that excites me... but the reality is IOS 7 is likely very far along and too far and scott forestall is still there...

So, change it to IOS 8 :) I don't want Jonny getting blamed for a product that other one touched...

that Apple fans had so much resentment towards Apple management. Is it because you hate latest Apple products? And if not then Why?

Most Apple customers are just fine with Apple products. What you have here on MacRumors is a self-selecting group of divas that thinks they're entitled to products that are nothing short of miraculous.

The rest of us just dig cool techie stuff.

I've been on MacRumors for ages and have rarely been as disappointed as I am today with the Forstall bashing--and it's not just here, but elsewhere too. And it's not just Apple fans, but Apple-haters as well. Forstall has done incredible work during his time at Apple and NeXT. The badmouthing is really not necessary.

Wait, what?

So much for calling Forstall the next Steve Jobs like CEO

So Forstall fired from Apple just like Steve Jobs was? In ten years Forstall will come back to save Apple from bankruptcy... Yes I'm kidding. ;)

And now with Sir Jon in charge of all human interface, we'll see iOS and OSX totally merge into the one OS to rule them all!

You apparently don't know the difference between a mobile OS and a desktop/server OS...

Have to say I'm not digging the Forstall hate/bashing. Yeah, skeumorphism is a little cheesy but the guy was central to one of the most amazing things at Apple. It's pretty clear that iOS is the future of Apple and he's done a pretty great job of overseeing it.

Yeah, he's not on Team Apple anymore but I don't think that's any reason to start trashing the guy.
Excellent Post!

What many are overlooking is the fact that anything & everything Forstall wanted to do was heavily controlled by Steve. I don't say that as a knock on Steve, but rather just a fact of life.

Why people on this forum seem so eager to side with Apple, quickly forgetting about various executives accomplishments reeks of hero worship ... Is more revealing of who they are, and how little they understand about the inner workings of large scale enterprise.

No surprise. Look at the stock price.

To anyone searching for other reasons I say, "Duh".

Forstall hasn't had a role in OS X development since he was put in charge of iOS. Blame Craig Federighi for that, the guy now in charge of iOS.

Exactly. I didn't understand why the poster implied he had.

Regardless, I hope the change in management means that the more powerful features of OS X will come to iOS, rather than the dumbing down of OS X to make it "compatible" with iOS. Clear example: stagnation of iWork on Mac, and yet the iOS and OS X versions are still not fully compatible.

My hope/speculation is not that Federighi will create one unified OS (that will happen, but is still 2-3 years out). But, will instead make sure that iOS and OS X versions of apps and the operating system services are increasingly at feature parity. As with Core Storage, etc., think Core Siri, Core Maps, etc. the difference will be that these features will be less a part of the OSs, and more a part of a new range of iCloud-backed services.

Having said that, the obvious next thing for Apple is to create an executive position for cloud services and hire some real smart people with their billions of cash on hand.

I couldn't agree more. What's more unbearable is that these are the same people who spend time in so-called technology forums as fashion themselves as geeks, they should know that Forstall's work goes far above "skeuomorphic" (which has become one of more annoying memes on the internet in recent months) and give him respect for what he's achieved. Instead we get a circlejerk of anti-skeuomorphism everywhere without looking back on his career at Apple.

I know people who call themselves "designers" who are worse.

Maybe it's different elsewhere, but the developers I work with are all highly intelligent, and that get's you a long long way to doing anything well. However, good user interface design is a fulltime job. If you expect a software engineer to write good software and then to create a good user interface in his or her spare time, that's not going to work.

It seems Ive has some experience with UI design.

So.....who picks up the vengeful Forstall?

Google/Android, Microsoft/Windows/Bing, blackberry, Marrissa Mayer and Yahoo...Who? Everybody wants a piece of the Apple pie. Forstall's looking like a great slice right now.

Ooooooo Samsung may be salivating. LOL.

2012: A lot to look forward to

I think this says it well:

I remember I said Forstall must be fired for the Mapsgate which has already been discovered by a lot of people since the beta period and Forstall did nothing.

I think I'll have a shot for ever reference to skeuomorphism in this thread. I should be dead shortly.

lol

UI/UX is a totally different field than Industrial Design (hardware) is a totally different field than Graphic Design

You think Ive would be an awesome Landscape Architect just because of his Industrial Design experience/talent?

Actually there is some level of commonality, the bigger problem is understanding the difference between static design and interactive design. Designing something that _looks_ pleasing is a different beast altogether than designing something that _behaves_ in a pleasing way. From a UX perspective, a screen that looks nice but is difficult to navigate/use doesn't do anyone any good. In the case of Fortstall, I think that he was beginning to lose sight of this fundamental fact with iOS starting to "look" a lot better than it "worked".

You probably didn't look hard enough to the right. There's a bus icon to the right of the walking icon, which is to the right of the car icon. The only real lack is the street view, which I've never used on a handheld before and probably won't ever need to. It's about as useless as the 3D flyover.

I have really mixed feelings on this. I kind of liked Scott. He did seem to be kind of the next in line for a CEO position and seemed to be someone who was strongly supported by Steve Jobs. I can't help but feel there was a reason Steve gave him the position and kept him there. If putting Ive in charge of UI was such a no brainer, why didn't Steve put him there sooner?

I know Steve isn't here anymore and we shouldn't ask WWSD, but surely there was a reason Steve didn't put Ive in charge of UI...maybe even if just to prevent him from being interrupted on his hardware design work, which I imagine is more than a full time job in itself.

If Tim made the call and let Scott go, more power to him, and I'm glad to see Tim stepping up and making some hard decisions, but I can't help but feel like something is wrong with this. Hopefully my fears are unwarranted and the next iOS will be the best version yet and blow the competition out of the water.

Best wishes to Scott. Hope he lands on solid ground after this. It's never easy to lose a job, but he shouldn't have trouble finding something else.
