Bring on the ads… if it’s going to subsidize my hardware purchases. But we all know that’s not going to happen.

Apple is quickly running out of ideas and rather than innovate their way out of it, they’re trying to pinch every penny out of their customers.

It’s truly amazing… the difference between an uneducated dreamer like Steve Jobs and brainwashed over-educated MBA types like Tim Cook and John Sculley.

How exactly are ads pinching pennies from YOU? And what are other examples of "every penny"?

I’ve never understood ads in map apps. Never in Google Maps or Waze did I see an ad and thought to myself… yes! I’ll tap this ad and go to this location instead of the one I opened the app to search directions for! 😂

It’s just wild because Apple built so much without needing ads plastered everywhere. But they are a publicly traded company so unfortunately it’s inevitable.
Like a lot of ads, it depends on the type. Coca Cola and Apple Pay for their products to be used as 'props' in movies and TV shows without it being disruptive.

A banner ad on a mobile device is an even more terrible experience than banner ads elsewhere. Showing a business of the wrong category in a search result list just makes the whole experience worse.

My expectation would be a few extra labelled pins when you start. You'll see a map decorated with parks, landmarks, and Taco Bell.

Ads will also appear in the "You Might Also Like" section at the bottom of individual app listings."

Many people complain about Google.
Now how many of them will complain about Apple and its ads its customers will now become the sources for its ads?
Wait until ads appear elsewhere outside of the App store.
You mean like how they already have existed for years in Stock and News?

wait... who actually uses Apple Maps?
I've used both and they seem to have their advantages and disadvantages. I think Apple can call out dirs way too soon sometimes, and Google way too late. I like Google lane guidance better, but Apple is getting better. Google seems to zoom in too much so I can't see the curve of the road coming up. I like Google better for searching something general that isn't a specific location or address. One superior thing about Apple is the passenger can see the list of dirs on the map in the app while turn by turn is on the screen. Android locks you out of the app when Android Auto is active

My personal observation:
Innovation at Apple clearly died with Steve Jobs.
Monetization at Apple gradually came with Tim Cook.

Congratulations. Without these ads Apple would obviously be doomed. (Yes, that was sarcasm…)

Since the inception of IAPs I have not purchased a single app/game that has IAPs.

The day the first ad appears on maps, the app will be deleted from my devices.
When I used to game on mobile, if I liked the game enough, I might have bought some pack with permanent bonuses and especially with ad free at a reasonable price, but I will never buy currency by itself. Well maybe if it's a good game that's not beyoned obviously PTW with lots of content, I might buy a little monthly just to support the game but those $100 packs are ridiculous

There is a line where corporates make profit then there is abusing the customer for greed to make even more profit. Ex. medical companies that can sell a drug for $50 and make profit but they sell it for $350 because the patient needs it and they are greedy.
Exactly, and why does every company have to branch out into everything in the universe. It was nice when places specialized, and so much that you knew exactly who to go to for what. And you don't have to always grow once you hit a certain point, especially once you already make more that 99% of companies

Would you rather want a 10% profit gain short term or 25% long term? That is what I think the man is missing out on. Eventually, people will leave Apple if they don't feel seen/heard/understood + new companies will challenge them and consumer needs. That is only healthy, but if you want people to stay with you even when your products arent really that amazing (personally I feel that is where Apple are right now), you want their loyalty. Tim seems willing to sacrifice that for quick profits. Sure, he is only CEO for a certain time so he can look good - but I don't see that as the best for the company long term.
No one cares about long term anymore. Apple could vanish from the face of the Earth now, and him and his execs would have enough money for multiple lifetimes

Obviously, the patient can't just buy the drug and now will have to watch 10 minutes of ads.

obviously drug companies can't just lose money on drugs they make and now you can just avoid the Today tab if you find it irrelevant

Until now, Today was the best of the App Store that Apple would pick for you every single day.
I disagree with this statement. The Today view, among the App Store as a whole, has tanked in quality in my use. Recall the tabs as "Today, Games, Apps, Arcade, Search" when you consider the following:

Today: There are 30 sections. Of these 30, 24 are strictly about games. There's one PSA about iOS 16, four about apps, and one split between apps and [mostly] games for kids.

Apps: This tab is the best in my opinion, even though it's littered with terrible side-scrolling lists, and would be better served with separations similar to the Mac App Store, or similiarities to the App Store of old. However, this tab is also full of apps you'd expect like social media, not underdog utility apps.

Search (Discover): These are search queries, and may be open to interpretation. Two of the four queries include "game", and I interpret the other two as games ("bus simulator", "celebrity look alike").

Search (Suggested): The first slot here is an ad and varies, so I'm not including it. There are 16 slots for apps listed here, all 16 are games for me.

I didn't include Games and Arcade because they are blatantly obviously 100% games.

Data collected from App Store on my iPhone as of posting.

In summation, it's obvious that Apple is pushing mobile gaming, as this is a cash cow. However, it's rather dishonest for Apple to push the narratives for discovery, the way to find some hidden gems. And I am personally against sideloading! These data points don't include redundancies, such as subway surfers being included in most of the game posts on the Today view. 24 posts about games sounds cool until you realize they're all about the same ten games, instead of indie games you've never heard of.

There are bloggers and other sources (like MR) that are better at finding good apps. When Apple's not promoting games, they skew editorials to apps with subscriptions as well, some research will net apps that do a better job for free or perpetual licensing.

i do cause i don’t use google at all except for youtube and then i’m slowly moving to rumble since google/youtube keep banning my favorite channels

I've noticed that as well... Google seems to be banning YouTube channels left and right with no real guidelines... although... I wonder how long rumble will last.

Apple finding little ways to pad profit margins in a big way, that is Tim's #1 job after all.

Ads, not including chargers and/or cables with some products. It all adds up to a lot of extra profit overall. They lied and fooled people that it was for the environment with the cables/chargers. I wonder if they can somehow spin this as something admirable and get those same fools to fall for this as well.

Edit: For those disliking this without bothering to comment back, please answer one simple question. If it is not being done for profit reasons, why wouldn't Apple just include a voucher in the box for a free cable/charger if needed?

Curious why does not including a charger have to be a zero sum decision or motive?

Can the choice by Apple and others to follow not be 2 cohesive and both correct choices:

1) lower cost of shipments per iPhone sold, ship more iPhones per freight (boat, plane or truck); thus increasing profits.

2) environmental concerns a win by less chargers into production and people’s homes?
- we know damn well that most iPhone users upgrade and stick to iPhone’s.
- most of those users HAVE existing 15w block chargers or multiple ones in use or storage. Lightning cables have been kept and in use with many extras for travel work home etc.

In this modern world most people purchase GaN chargers from Anker etc so why SHOULD Apple including a charging block!??
- you’re first to iPhone and most likely used an android phone you’ve already got a USB-C block and the USB-C to Lightning cable is included in the box.

Governments like Brazil charging Apple for not including chargers really need to charge themselves. No issues with all the trash from USB-A to MicroUSB blocks that Nokia made most likely in trash piles today. So the fines makes no sense.

Every time Apple talks about advertising, I wonder when they’re going to turn into Google. Laissez-faire capitalism is in its end stages. Every large corporation is doing the same crap to appease Wall Street’s pathological demand for perpetual growth. Greedy bastards would rather destroy a company and its customer-oriented purpose than not be able to squeeze out another few drops of blood from the stone.

Advertising is cancer on society. Instead of using more of my own words, here are someone else’s:

Capitalism is good at start and bad at the end. In the end, it just turns evil to suck out every last drop of profit. They do not care about value, quality, on brand name. There was story where Jobs made the choice to pick the more expensive translucent 1998 iMac case over a less expensive opaque one to make sure the product look more beautiful for the user. No one would do this today, its all about cost squeezing.

Ads can be good though if they are relevant, reasonable, and non invasive. Think of something like looking for a house to buy, you do want to see different offers and options.

So in order to use an Android-distro which stops Google from getting data to datamine for their ad-business I have to give Google money for a Google-phone to use this anti-Google Android-distro?

Isn't it better just to not give Google money (directly or indirectly) at all?

Think of it this way. You will pay for Google hardware to gain your privacy. The other option is pay apple for hardware+software or some other manufacturer+Android and get your privacy abused. People say Apple is "private" and while its better than Google you will never know what happens behind closed doors. Here is an Example .

Pick your poison

hardly abuse.

if a drug takes billions to research, but the drug only helps a few hundred thousand patients, how will a drug company make their money back?

I did mention as long as they are profitable. Insulin in USA can reach $100 meanwhile in Italy its $10. Need to make their research money back or pure greed on people's health issues? source

As this is all about paid search results in an app made by apple, none of these methods will do anything to minimize that.

You are correct but overall thats as much you can do to block ads. It does have to be 100% solution, it can be the best available solution.

Wall Street hasn't been too fond of it.

there are few options like Utreon and Rumble, but your best bet is Odysee

profit allows the company to throw billions at developing a new medicine quickly. Italy's own ReiThera Srl covid vaccine doesn't even seem to be approved yet.

I do not want to switch from MacOS to Linux. But if Apple starts polluting my computer desktop with ads, I will have no choice but to switch. I do serious work on my computer. I will not have it turned into a platform for Apple to advertise at me.
Not liking the idea of ads in App Store eventually spilling out into to actual devices is either.

If this ends up happening this is TRULY the time to vote with your dollars, and most importantly try to influence the larger stake holders of shares ownership to propose changes to revert or prevent this in the os it selves as proposed votes in shareholder meetings.

Can’t wait for ads on Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, my iCloud Drive and Apple News (oh wait)
Sadly this bundle should not be going u in my opinion as I feel membership is more sticky than singular subscriptions is.

Apple keeps on delivering things to put between me and the things I actually look for.
Not surprised but still disappointed.
