Honestly ads come in handy when they are related to something you are looking up or searching for (IF they do not breach privacy)

If you hate ads, tracking, and want to maintain privacy there is a solid project being developed that is FOSS called GrapheneOS . AFAIK its Android stripped of tracking code + fortified for security. Please donate if you like.

Good thing the search feature is easily accessed, I barely notice the ads. It'd be nice if someone made an app that could block ad content across the device!

There is few solutions:-

1- Set up PiHole (a mini dns server) Its much easier than you think. If you know what you are doing it will be done in 25min.

2-Use a VPN that has adblocking capability like ProtonVPN and mullvad(double check for adblock feature). 2 best names in the business

3- There are free public DNS servers that block ads. Change your router or any device DNS and it will autoblock ads system wide (or network wide if its on the router). ControlD and Adguard offers this service. Simple change your DNS to:
ControlDNS
IPv4

76.76.2.2
76.76.10.2

IPv6

2606:1a40::2
2606:1a40:1::2

AdGuard
IPv4

94.140.14.14
94.140.15.15

IPv6

2a10:50c0::ad1:ff
2a10:50c0::ad2:ff

If you want to further tweak it and customize it exactly there are paid options from ControlD and NextDNS . For web browsers there is Brave that has built in adblocker(available for ios), for Safari there is Adguard Extension(for ios, another option is 1Blockr=> Paid), for anything else you can use uBlockOrigin (the gold standard). Its best to combine a server adblock and browser plugin.

Please note DNS adblocker are unable to block ads on some website most notably Twitter and YouTube especially when using the app basically because they serve the ads from the same server they host their content. Block their ads = block their whole service .

Warning: some evil corporates enforces their own DNS even if you change the DNS on the router and some won't give you the option to change the DNS on their devices. Most notably some Android TVs and Android phones maybe.

yes folks. This is to increase profit margins. Because Apple is a for-profit company. For-profit companies want to make more profit, and this goes toward that goal.

Do I need to draw this out for some of you?

There is a line where corporates make profit then there is abusing the customer for greed to make even more profit. Ex. medical companies that can sell a drug for $50 and make profit but they sell it for $350 because the patient needs it and they are greedy.

Because it costs billions to develop and get a drug to market? And apple is taking advantage of a business opportunity?

Yeap...

Easy enough to avoid if you use an adblocking DNS server. I find that AdGuard works pretty well with eliminating all current ads on the store app. If you want a free solution over cellular, use DNS Cloak app. This allows you to select from a number of DNS servers that will work on both Wifi and cellular. Unfortunately, Apple doesn't make it easy to custom a cellular DNS server by default.

Every time Apple talks about advertising, I wonder when they’re going to turn into Google. Laissez-faire capitalism is in its end stages. Every large corporation is doing the same crap to appease Wall Street’s pathological demand for perpetual growth. Greedy bastards would rather destroy a company and its customer-oriented purpose than not be able to squeeze out another few drops of blood from the stone.

Advertising is cancer on society. Instead of using more of my own words, here are someone else’s:

So in order to use an Android-distro which stops Google from getting data to datamine for their ad-business I have to give Google money for a Google-phone to use this anti-Google Android-distro?

Isn't it better just to not give Google money (directly or indirectly) at all?

I have no problem with “You Might Also Like…” ads in the Store. Sometimes it could come in handy for me as a customer, and it could also be a huge increase in revenue for an up-and-coming app developer. Win-win to me!

Now DEV can hear fix apps they made. Instead of not doing a thing about their wear. if they want attention to their apps then care about the users that use them.

Edit: For those disliking this without bothering to comment back, please answer one simple question. If it is not being done for profit reasons, why wouldn't Apple just include a voucher in the box for a free cable/charger if needed?

majority would redeem the voucher and having a separate box for cable/charger would be worse than simply including it in the iPhone box, especially if separately shipped. even if it wasn't shipped and you had to drive out to pick it up, total net emissions would be worse including your emissions.

hardly abuse.

if a drug takes billions to research, but the drug only helps a few hundred thousand patients, how will a drug company make their money back?

To Apple’s credit they are at least marking it as an advertisement and not using subterfuge to mask advertisements as news about products

That‘s a really low bar for a “To Apple’s credit …” comment.

So as well as taking a slice of developer revenues, Apple is effectively gouging more money from devs by forcing them to fight over advertising space.

Within a few months of this going live, the top featured apps will be subscription scams.

But to Apple‘s credit they’ll still be taking a cut from their customers being fleeced.

No wait, that’s not how that works is it … 🤔

Obviously, the patient can't just buy the drug and now will have to watch 10 minutes of ads.

Any corporation hates giving people money. Large supermarket chains have offers for their minimum wage staff to spend their wage on pay day at their place of work for 10% off and Apple are no different. Apple deep down don't like seeing others profit from their ecosystem as they think it should be theirs and its money lost. This is one way to get that money back.

👏👏👏

Exactly. I’m not even mad at them for reducing costs per device as all companies should strive to be as efficient as possible. But to say it’s ONLY for environmental reasons? Shenanigans!

A voucher in the box or an option at the point of sale would have been much more customer friendly and would still reduce the number of additional chargers.
